Like 5G for dummies style?
I keep seeing posts on Facebook about being aware they are trying to slide this legislation through behind all the Covid stuff and how health care costs will rise because of it.
What the heck is it? An upgrade to cellular service? Why the health concerns? Or are people needing a tinfoil hat?
What is the big controversy?

I don't know about any health debates, but there are some concerns that 5G may interfere with satellites meteorolgists use to predict the weather. It has to do with the frequency that that FCC wants to sell to be used for 5G (not sure how that carries over into Canada).

Most of the health concerns tend to be by those who follow conspiracy theories. Right now 5G is only available in certain places, mainly in larger cities. Some countries have asked for health studies to be done on 5G. I think anytime a new technology comes around people are concerned about the risks.

An upgrade to cellular service? Why the health concerns? Or are people needing a tinfoil hat? What is the big controversy? Simply put, wireless signals travel through the air via radio frequency. In the US, the division and allocation of these radio bands are done by the FCC for various purposes – for defense use, for consumer cellular use, for space and astronomy, for radio, for broadcast, etc. 5G (or fifth generation wireless communication) is supposedly faster and a better technology than the widespread 4G. The link between the coronavirus and 5G is pure tinfoil hat conspiracy. The various unfounded and ridiculous theories are: 5G radio waves lessen our immunity to viruses, 5G facilitates the transmission of coronavirus, 5G damages human cells, Wuhan was struck hard by coronavirus because of its rollout of 5G. It’s all nonsense. But evidently, some people do believe it all because 5G cell towers were torched in the UK.

There are idiots on my NextDoor who are convinced 5G is a government plot to kill and/or enslave us all. They are all the same right-wing nut jobs who like to invade other threads to yakkk about how Trump is the greatest president ever and climate change is a liberal conspiracy to take over the world.
Enough said.

People (mostly weirdos on Twitter) were saying our town was doing it. They had "leaked video" that proved it. It was our tech guys putting up hot spots around town, so our students could have internet access while distance learning. Our school police liaison was helping. But nope. Let's say it was a 5G conspiracy.
Idiots.

They said the same thing about 4G, and 3G, too.

The really hilarious part of all of this is it is the right wing trumpers who are spinning this as a government plot. Who the hell is running this government? Their hero and savior the great orange moron. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Following this "logic" back means that there had to be a reason to clap, therefore the NHS had to be involved in a massive nation response, therefore there had to be a virus from China via Italy to coincide with half term so that families skiing would bring it back to the UK. Simples.

One of my new friends on FB (a student from the 80's) posts about this all of the time. He says that he believes all viruses are man-made including the current bat induced Covid-19. He says that the towers are somehow related to the virus and that it is proof by seeing where the most cases are (big cities) and the number of 5g towers. Ugh. Clearly critical thinking was not taught in my room that year! . He also talks a lot about Amendment 21 (?) and that it is all biblical. He's a truck driver and sees a lot of the US and takes pictures of things proving he is right. He is really super sweet, but kind of an odd duck. In fourth grade, he gave me a hand written/drawn picture book of how to shave my legs. I wish I still had it!

A lot of the “5G is bad!” stuff came out of Russia, initially.
Make of that what you will.
Me, I wouldn’t trust Russia as far as I could throw them.

In fourth grade, he gave me a hand written/drawn picture book of how to shave my legs. I wish I still had it! Oh, so now we have to worry about boysplaining on top of mansplaining? Dammit. Seeing him as an adult is really funny. I have many, many stories of boys boysplaining things to me as their teacher. My favorite was of a ten year old asking why I had to leave class 15 minutes early for an appointment. I told him that I was going to get an ultrasound to find out if the baby was a boy or a girl. He told me that I in no way should do that and God intended me to find out when the rest of the world found out (when the dr. slapped the baby's butt). I told him that when he got pregnant and carried a baby for nine months he could be in charge of when God wanted him to know. He's another kiddo friend on FB that was mortified when I reminded him of this. He's a dad now and just apologized over and over for being a ten year old boy. Ha.

Agenda 21 I had to explain to an anti-vaxxer who thinks Covid is made up and 5G is causing it that the reason there were so many more cases is areas where there is 5G is because more people tend to live in those areas. He wasn’t having it. We went to high school together so have many friends in common. So many have unfriended him. I keep him around for my amusement. I need a good eyeroll every now and then. 🤣

A level of critical thinking and a bit of common sense is needed by all who reads and believe everything that is posted on social media nowadays. A basic level of how viruses work would also help. The level of radiation that towers use are far lower than many things in our daily lives. If anyone believes the nonsense about 5G then anyone with a television would have been dead a long time ago! People need to learn that reading things on line has to be done with a giant pinch of salt, otherwise we'll be taken over by all the idiots out there.

Oh my gosh, my massage therapist (and friend) believes every conspiracy theory known to man. She is very "crunchy" and also believes in all kinds of quack medicine. She is posting all kinds of tinfoil hat theories on 5g.
I really like her and she gives great massages but I'm at the point I need to mute her on Facebook because she is making my eye twitch.
