This is not something that needs to be solved today. I ended up using the title without the inset being cut out, but... I was trying to create an outline type title with the inside of the letters open to be filled with pp or for the background to show through. I found a blocky font I liked, typed in the capital letters and adjusted them a bit so they were a bit "thicker", created an inner offset for each letter, then moved those out of the way while I welded the letters together. Then moved in the insets and liked the result. BUT... When I went to cut the title, I could not figure out how to tell the machine to cut the insets!!! Just got the blocky letters. I tried a few different ways, but nothing would work. And I didn't like the look of the thick blocky letters in the dark colour I had chosen for an outline. Ended up editing the cut file I had created to make the letters thinner, and cut out of a slightly brighter cs. Backed the word on a colourful inked background and my page is done. But what am I missing? If I want to do one of those open letter titles again, how do I get the Silhouette to cut those inserts??? Maybe you can help me, gramma?

I found a blocky font I liked, typed in the capital letters and adjusted them a bit so they were a bit "thicker", How did you "adjust them so they were a bit thicker" ? Did you just thicken the line? That won't really work. Best way to thicken a font is to do a slight offset. You can select offset and choose 'round' or 'corner' to best fit the style of your font. It is has squared edges on the font - choose corner. Take this 'thickened' font and move it off from your original typed out text. Do your offset or inset of your thickened offset text to the desired amount. Click and drag across so you select both the original and the offset portion of that title, the right click and choose COMPOUND PATH. That will join those sets of lines and it will cut as an outline.

Is it possible to select what is to be cut by the color of the “outlines” (stroke)?
Another thought, was everything grouped together before sending to cut (so it’s part of the same “layer”)?

There is a font that "prints" the outsides --- Steelhead??? Otherwise - look into creating a compound path --that is what creates a "hole" in a design. Potentially-- probably -- I don't understand your question. But I like the look that I think you're speaking of, and the easiest way to create it is with the font

Thanks, iowgirl. By "thickening", I just meant stretching it a bit horizonatally to allow a bit more space for the cut out. As I said, I finished the page with the cut done differently, but I wanted to learn how to DO this! Started a new file with one letter and am trying some different things now. Ryann, I could see the solid line as soon as I clicked on Send--it was only on the outside outline of the letter. And using right click or edit, "group" was not available to be chosen when I had the inset inside the letter. I think you are right about the layering, but have no idea how to snap the layers together as yet. When I pick up the inset and move it to the side away from the letter, then go to Send, it highlights all of the lines. When I move it back over the letter, it fades that line and only shows the outside edge to be cut. Didn't know where to find Compound Path, but will try that now. ETA YAY! Found Compound Path when I right clicked on the selected letter and the inside AND outside were highlighted when I hit send. THANK YOU! I should probably do another one of these right away before I forget how!

I DID it! Used a font I liked. Did external and internal offsets. Deleted original font. Welded. Compound Path. Cut. Used photos for the fill.
