I think Trump’s response/lack of response is irrelevant. This would all still be happening no matter who was president. There are enough of these people to have elected Mr. Trump. Stop blaming him for everything. These idiots have minds of their own.

When he quits messing up, I'll quit blaming him. I promise. ETA: Do you think his tweeting "Liberate Michigan", etc and not wearing a mask himself, have NOTHING to do with it.

Well, I don't think it would be all "kumbaya" just because Hillary was in charge and wearing a mask. The American frontier and all that. Every single country has its own personality.

Yes, I agree that there would still be idiots. It's just extra damaging to have one of them in the Oval Office, fomenting stupidity.

Stop blaming him for everything. These idiots have minds of their own. Actually, it’s not irrelevant. As anyone can see, people are mimicking and following what the leader says and does. So far, he has openly and loudly attacked governors who don’t kiss his ass, and since then there have been domestic terrorists storming those state houses in protest—organized by pro-trump groups, maga hat wearing and trump sign carrying protestors. He’s given conflicting and 100% wrong statements regarding mask wearing, testing, medications, and often in the same press conference as professional such as Dr. Fauci, Dr. Bright, Dr. Brix. So no, his idiocy is not irrelevant here. These “supporters”, people who voted for the idiot, need to stop blaming medical and science and put the blame squarely where it falls—with Trumps idiocy, his gross incompetence and insecurities that have created the larger mess.

Here’s the thing. Ohio is an open carry state. But all too often in this country, “open carry” means it’s okay for a white guy, but when a black guy does it, someone calls the police and he ends up dead. That is my objection. Ah, the plot thickens. I'm not a proponent of open carry. I don't care what color someone's skin is, open carry is unnerving and I think it's stupid for anyone to open carry inside a store like WalMart. I certainly wouldn't expect a white man to be allowed to be in a store with a gun in his hand without consequence. I've never lived anywhere with open carry, though, so I don't really have any point of personal reference here. Black, white or purple, people are gonna call in the cops right quick if they see you walking through a store with a gun in your hand. (That's what I know.) There's a long history of trying to deny people of color the right to bear arms. That bigotry is still among us. A black man and with a gun in his hand? Yep. He's gonna get a lot of attention in a hurry.

Stop blaming him for everything. These idiots have minds of their own. I disagree with just about everything in this post. Only in the USA would you have someone who says out loud, and apparently believes, that the President of the nation’s response to a pandemic that is killing thousands of people in a very short period of time is irrelevant. He is the leader of our country - of course his response is relevant. I could equally say to you “Stop trying to absolve him of his gross failure to lead the nation in this time of crisis.”

Um, the open carry of long guns has been legal in Texas for a loooong time, and open carry of handguns for CHL holders since January 1, 2016 (I believe before you left the state).

More craziness. Heavily Armed Protesters Gather Again At Michigan Capitol To Decry Stay-At-Home Order May 14, 202010:01 AM ET ABIGAIL CENSKY FROM WKAR Public Media Protesters carrying weapons gather at the Michigan Capitol on Thursday in Lansing. Protesters are demonstrating against Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer for the coronavirus stay-at-home order in effect through May 28. Gregory Shamus/Getty Images Updated at 12:09 p.m. ET Despite heavy rain, armed protesters gathered Thursday at the State Capitol in Michigan in what the organizing group, Michigan United for Liberty, has branded "judgment day." This was the third planned demonstration since Michigan has been under a stay-at-home-order from Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Ahead of Thursday's protest, comments were made in private Facebook groups threatening Whitmer and lawmakers with violence, according to reporting by the Detroit Metro Times. When asked about the threats in a Wednesday appearance on ABC's The View Whitmer said, "I would be not truthful if I said it didn't bother me. It certainly does." Whitmer added, "These protests, in a perverse way, make it likelier that we're going to stay in a stay-home posture." Concern about Thursday's gathering was higher than previous protests. But rain and an interruption in planning — Facebook reportedly removed the organizers' private group from their platform for inciting violence — may have curbed the crowed, which seemed substantially smaller than two weeks ago. That was when armed protesters brought signs that compared Whitmer to Adolf Hitler, showed nooses and Confederate flags. Some signs read, "Tyrants Get The Rope." Article continues after sponsor message During that gathering, demonstrators entered the Capitol and chanted: "Our House" and "Let Us In" outside of the House chamber against a line of Michigan State Police. Many protesters didn't wear masks or follow social distancing. Some armed demonstrators entered the Senate gallery and stood above lawmakers. At least one lawmaker donned a bulletproof vest. Tensions have been brought to a boil between Whitmer and Republican leadership in the state after the governor not only rebuffed Republican plans to reopen the economy in favor of following advice of epidemiologists from the University of Michigan, but also extended the stay-at-home order through May 28. Behind all of this is an emerging battle over guns in the Michigan State Capitol. After the second protest, state Democratic lawmakers requested that the Michigan State Capitol Commission ban guns on the premises. On Monday, the Democratic attorney general issued an opinion saying the appointed body had the authority to do so and warned against a "powder keg dynamic" created by heavily armed protesters. The commission demurred and instead formed a subcommittee to study whether it had the authority to make the decision. Republican Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey later called the notion of a gun ban "cowardly" in a floor speech, calling for protesters who are threatening on Thursday to be arrested by state police. Both the governor and attorney general noted Wednesday that protesters could be charged with brandishing if they are threatening to others. "This is a terribly concerning development in that we have legislators who are showing up to work wearing bulletproof vests. That is disenfranchising thousands of people in our state if their legislator doesn't feel safe enough to go to work and to do what their job is," said Whitmer in her interview on The View. "I respect people's right to dissent, but that does not extend to endangering other people's lives and we take it very seriously," said Whitmer. Both the state House and Senate, whose schedules are decided by Republican leadership, are adjourned through Tuesday next week. www.npr.org/2020/05/14/855918852/heavily-armed-protesters-gather-again-at-michigans-capitol-denouncing-home-order

Um, the open carry of long guns has been legal in Texas for a loooong time Sorry. I should amend that to I don't remember ever seeing someone open carry. If I did, it was so unremarkable that it made no memory. I take note of the weapons LEO wear, so it isn't as if I'm not aware and looking. I can't remember a single time ever seeing someone open carry in a store. You've got me wondering now... OK, I just checked. Open carry in Texas went into effect Jan 1, 2016. That explains a lot. I've been in and out of Texas since then and didn't really go anywhere while in Texas after it went into effect. I don't think I was even aware of the change. Other places I've lived didn't have open carry while I lived there, or again, I didn't get out much and didn't see it or it was relatively rare for people to open carry when I did. Something that's good to know, so I'm glad you corrected me. ETA - I still think it's a bad idea to open carry in a store or around a crowd even where it is legal.

Michigan Closes Down Capitol in Face of Death Threats From Armed Protesters Against Gov. Whitmer www.newsweek.com/michigan-closes-down-capitol-face-death-threats-armed-protesters-against-gov-whitmer-1504241"On Thursday, Michigan closed down its capitol building and canceled its legislative session after online death threats made against Governor Gretchen Whitmer. The threats were made by protesters who planned to attend a "Judgement Day" protest at the capitol. The protesters ostensibly oppose Whitmer's statewide shutdown orders meant to slow the spread of coronavirus. Dozens of posts in private invitation-only Facebook groups called for Whitmer to be hanged, lynched, shot, beaten or beheaded. One suggested crowdfunding sources to hire a hitman to kill her. "We haven't had any bloodshed yet, but the populous [sic] is counting to three, and yesterday was day two," wrote Dave Meisenheimer in a 385,000-member Facebook group called Michiganders Against Excessive Quarantine. "Next comes the watering the tree of liberty with the blood of tyrants," he concluded." How bad could it get, people wondered when Trump was elected. How bad indeed.

the writers of the Federalist papers (madison, hamilton) and the constitution did not trust the "majority"--which is why we are a republic and not a pure democracy. they trusted the landed educated white men and no one else. does everyone notice that the declaration is "life liberty and the pursuit of happiness'.... and the constitution is life, liberty and property"...
