I said always...but occasionally with the kids taking forever to get out of the car I get distracted and it doesn't happen.
Last fall, someone posted on our neighborhood facebook page that they left for work at 4am and found someone going through her car in the driveway. My husband checked out cameras and sure enough, my doors didn't get locked that night and someone was in my car at 3:15am. I'm sure he was disappointed that he found maybe $1 in change and a bunch of feminine hygiene products. He hung out in someone else's car and smoked a cigarette.

We always lock the cars in the driveway. Many years ago, I forgot and someone (teenagers?) went through it. Scattered papers on the lawn, but there was nothing of value in the car to take. One year while we were away at Thanksgiving, someone broke antenna off DH's pick up and used it to get in the car. He had some tools behind the seat, which were taken. However the most annoying/upsetting was they took the car's manual (sometimes one needs to consult the manual!).
Over 50 years ago I learned to ALWAYS lock a vehicle in the city. Mom and I were shopping for my college clothing. We were in a very worn out farm PU. We purchased all my pjs and underwear and went back into the store. Someone took all the packages from the seat. I don't know why neither Mom nor I left truck unlocked, but I have never left a vehicle unlocked "in town" again.

Depends where I am. In my current town I park in the driveway and never lock my car there or if I’m doing a quick run in to the post office or something. Anywhere else nearby that's more urban, I lock it always. I’ve lived in more urban areas and always locked it.

I park in the garage at home and do not lock my car in the garage. Everywhere else, yes I lock it.

not at home because I park my car in the garage. I don't keep anything of great value in there.

I always lock my car. In New Zealand there have been insurance claims declined because of cars not being locked - policy holders have a duty to take 'reasonable care' of their insured items. If someone has not locked up or cleared seats of valuables, they may be deemed to have not taken that reasonable care.

My car locks automatically with the proximity locking setting. I used to not lock my old car in the garage, anywhere else I would lock, even in the driveway. I've seen a lot of 'caught on camera' where people walk around neighborhoods checking car doors to see if they're locked, so unless I was outside with the car I would lock it no matter what. I really like that my car automatically locks now.

It would literally never occur to me to not lock my car. Same. About as automatic as breathing for me.

The only time I do not lock my car is when it is in the garage behind the closed gate.

Yes. It’s just automatic to me to lock it behind me as I’m walking to the front door. My husband is bad about locking his, and he’s had things stolen more than once.

Rarely. I just don't think about it most of the time. I just try not to leave anything in it.
And I never have the doors locked while I'm driving; for some reason the thought of that freaks me right out. What if I needed to bail on the car quickly & the door was locked & I panicked?

Always. Garage door openers are not difficult to hack. I live in a manned gated smaller community with patrols in a lower crime area. But, last year there were a rash of residential and car thefts due hacked openers and people leaving their cars and or the entry from the garage to the house unlocked. People were careless enough to leave computers, wallets, office/business keys and guns in unlocked cars in the garage. Why provide opportunity to offenders, just takes a second to lock up and they will find an easier target.

I bought my first car in 2005 (it was a 2006 model - my previous cars had been family hand me downs), and it automatically locked when I shifted out of park. Same thing with every other car we've bought since then - does your car not do that?

I always lock my car. I’ve lived in too many big cities and have learned that thieves will steal anything they can fin. Even here, where we have a gated courtyard for our house, we lock the cars.

Mine usually locks on it’s own in a locked garage but 30% of the time I find it unlocked.

Mine is never locked. I have a soft top Jeep and don’t want people to cut the top so I leave it unlocked all the time. I never leave anything of value in it.
We used to lock the glove compartment until someone ripped it out trying to get into it. Now we don’t.

I'm married to a locksmith. I lock everything ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/Q_m8lDOvc_3Le3r1GKdf.jpg) However, I grew up veeeeerrry rural. We did not lock the house (not entirely sure there was even a lock on the front door), and the standard operating procedure for vehicles was that the keys to the unlocked car were left on the floormat on the driver's side of the car. In case someone needed to move the car or something. I don't recall ever hearing about vehicle theft or misuse or of anyone having their home broken into. This was a town of less than 50 people or so. There was a public boarding school with 100 students that made up most of the population of the town, but the students who were from more than 10 miles away lived in a dormitory and had a 9pm curfew, so they were not free to wander the (very few) streets.

In our garage? No. In our driveway? No, except if it's during the night which is rare, I usually park in the garage. When visiting my parents, who live out in the boonies? No, but I would if I were staying overnight but I never do since they live close by. Pretty much everywhere else? Yes.

We always lock the car doors. Besides drunk driving, the only crimes we seem to have is people breaking into unlocked cars and stealing stuff from peoples cars parked in their driveways.

The only time my car is not locked is when I'm getting into and out of it. As soon as I'm inside I lock myself in, and as soon as I get out, I lock myself out. In some areas I will lock the doors between putting something on the passenger seat and walking round the back of the car to get into the driver's seat to drive off.

I always lock my car, I can't imagine not doing it. DSO can't understand why I bother to lock it even in our garage that nobody can get into. I tell him that it's just a habit for me to click the lock button on my fob as soon as I get out of the car. I don't even think about it.

I live in a small town with relatively little crime and lock my doors without fail. MIL never locks hers, even when running areas around DFW and it baffles me. Now, ask me which one of us has had their cars broken into and something stolen? Yeah, that’d be me.
