UPDATE: I submitted a ticket to the local post office based on their recommendation. I asked the basic questions like when can we expect to resume mail delivery, how long does this investigation last, do you need a witness? I get the vaguest of responses from them saying that we will just have to wait for the investigation to conclude and sorry for the inconvenience. Alrighty then!
I went to the PO yesterday to pick up my mail, and asked them directly how long this was going to take. He spoke to his supervisor and basically came back with an "i don't know". Well, that wasn't good enough for one of my neighbors. She had done some research and found a similar situation that happened with a small group of gated townhomes like ours who actually sued the post office. The post office was required to notify the residents, and yet we have not ever been notified until we pursued it ourselves. She (my good neighbor) went to the post office today armed with that information. End result, the PO manager agreed that it had been too long since mail had stopped without notification and the other residents should not suffer because of one person's bad behavior. They will resume delivering our mail and only Phil will not get his. So yay!

I live in a group of 6 townhomes - 3 on each side that face each other with a shared driveway that goes up the middle. If people are out there talking, it can amplify the noise, which is usually not a problem. Last Monday, I was working in my 1st floor office, and I heard yelling. At first I thought it was two of my nice neighbors hollering "hey, how ya doings" to each other, but then I realized that it was angry yelling. I peeked out my front door through the window, and I see it's Phil yelling at our postman. The exact phrase I heard was "get the f*@ of my property, you piece of Sh*&".
Well, I noticed after a couple of days that I wasn't getting any mail, but maybe it was just a light week. I talked to another neighbor, and they said they weren't getting any mail either. I told them I had heard Phil yelling at the postman, and we figured out that he was most likely the reason we weren't getting our mail. So that neighbor sought out the postman in the neighbor and had a recorded conversation with him, so that he could take that back to our HOA. The postman said the Phil starting yelling and cursing at him about misdelivered mail (which we don't have an issue with), and CALLED HIM THE N WORD!!!! Then lunged at him a couple of times and chased him off the property. He said the post office would be conducting an investigation and in the meantime we will no be receiving mail.
I tried calling the post office with no luck, so I submitted a ticket. Has anyone had anything like this happen before? Given the current state, I really do not want to go stand in line at the post office on a regular basis. I'm considering getting a mailbox at one those shipping places, but then I really don't want the added expense on account of one unhinged guy.

We had a whack neighbor years ago. We did end up having to open a mailbox. Sorry Phil is an ass.

Can you bring it up with the HOA? They should be able to make accommodations for you to receive your mail elsewhere in the neighborhood and deal with the other guy.
I understand the postman’s feelings and don’t blame him, but I would think the USPS would swap routes during an investigation rather than stop mail for people not involved.

Yikes! Is there any recourse against that guy through the HOA? I wouldn’t want to deliver mail if I faced that either.

No! You should not have to forfeit your mail delivery because of your lunatic neighbor. Push hard on your HOA to address the problem.
The poor mail guy doesn’t deserve such abuse, so I don’t blame him for not wanting to deliver on your street. Good luck!

Wow, your neighbor is a real asshole. I feel for your postman. He shouldn't have to deal with that and deliver to someone who threatens him.
However you should get your mail. The USPS needs to find a way for your postman to be safe and for you to get your mail.

The USPS will not deliver to an area where someone is considered dangerous. Period. They are within their rights to do so. Frankly, I would be pissed at my neighbor and would go to the HOA as well. Something needs to be done about Phil. Maybe he needs to be charged for all the neighbors getting PO Boxes. |

Oh that sucks... wishful thinking that someone would put "Phil" in his place. What an ass. Too bad maybe that the postman can't leave all your mail (except Phil) with one person to hand out. Probably not allowed. Then Phil would have to deal with getting his own mail.

What a mess. Most PO Boxes around here you don't have to wait in line in order to access, so that may be an option. It's pretty ridiculous that you'd have to go through that though because of idiot neighbor.

Especially if it is their regular route, the carrier is being inconvenienced and punished by the asshat. While I feel for the others involved by not getting their mail, the problem should be fix at the broken end. And it isn't at USPS' end. Phil needs to be "fixed" via HOA, neighbors, or nay appropriate authorities. If the inconvenience to others goes away by changing routes and Phil then feels better, it's a lot more probable that people will not confront Phil any longer because "all good in their world." Phil's the problem and the community needs to keep feeling that. |

Installation of a cluster box takes time since the USPS has to approve the box and location so everyone still won't get mail delivered for a while.
Hopefully your HOA ( or a visit from the PD) will get this solved asap for all of you.

One of my daughters is the president of the HOA in the subdivision they live in. It's amazing the "problems" she is faced with trying to solve!! I feel for them!! For her, it's an unpaid job, and it adds so much stress to her days, there is no way I'd serve in that position--ever!! This guy Phil sounds like a lady my daughter has been trying to "get along" with for several months now!! But her problem is trying to get the resident to be nice to the landscapers!! This lady pulled a gun on them, and they were on "common property" not her property at all!! Some people are really weird.

Phil is a monumental jerk. I suspect he will have another rage induced fit when he finally realizes he's not getting ANY of his mail, never mind the 'misdelivered mail'. It seems like getting an off site mailbox is your best solution for now. Good luck at finding a solution.

OMG Phil needs to go away. I don't blame the mailman at all - he should not have to deal with that when he is just doing his job. Honestly? I would document the date, time, what I heard and submit it to the HOA in writing and also get it to the Post Office. If no one stands up for the mailman, it could become a he vs he situation, with nothing to prove it happened, and that would be wrong.

We do have the shared bank of mailboxes outside of our gate facing the sidewalk (the postman is a walking mailman - he can't drive to deliver the mail in my 'hood). However, the day Phil yelled at him, the postman was delivering a package onto his nextdoor neighbor's front porch. Our individual mail slots are pretty narrow, like maybe 3-4" tall, so almost anything that is not an envelope, has to be left on our porches. Because of Phil's meltdown, our mail carrier doesn't even feel comfortable going to the mailboxes now. |

Does Phil throw hissy fits like this often? If so, I would call the police every time he goes into a rage, especially if you hear him threaten someone. Get your other neighbors on the same page. When you call, tell them that you don't feel safe and that the mail carrier won't even deliver mail to your street because of this guy. You want a record of his behavior in case he ever becomes physically violent with someone.
Does he live with family? If so, are they safe?

There is no way the USPS should place another postal worker in that situation. It isn't about the first postman's feelings, it is about a postal worker being verbally assaulted and physically chased off the property. No kidding. And I AM in Texas. To be honest, I'd be surprised if hasn't been shot at, given his anger issues. My solution thus far is to avoid him. I'll talk to our HOA guy and see if he will be reporting him. I'm not sure the police department will do anything, but we do have the county constables that we pay to patrol the neighborhood. |
