i have done 16:8 most of my life. i've never eaten breakfast and i hate late dinners so this works for me. my first meal is 12 and my last is no later than 7:30. if i'm eating without DH, it's 5:00. i'm more mindful of my dinner portions because i may need to ease back depending on what i had for lunch. i'm not really a snacker either. just lunch and dinner.

I, too, use the Zero App. Just the free version. I like being able to see how long I have fasted. Today it was 18.5 hours. My goal was 16 and could have gone past the 18.5 hours butt DH came home for lunch and shared a salad with him. I wasn't starving though.

'Scuse me AussieMeg for replying to tincin but I believe Meg only doing the 800 calories on the 2 fasting days. On the other 5 normal days you aren't restricted by calorie numbers just supposed to be sensible and not go mad Gotta love the ambiguity of the internet! 😃. I was assuming that 5:2 meant 5 fasting days and 2 regular eating days. I don’t think only 2 days of fasting per week would result in steady/any weight loss. That’s what I thought too.

I don't know much about IF, but if you say 16:8 does that mean you fast for 16 hrs. and eat during an 8 hr. pd of time?
I'm impressed how well you all are doing! I would have to many excuses to be able to do that. And I get so hungry. But it's interesting learning about what everyone is doing! I'm proud of you all! That's great!

Yes the first number is the fasting hours and the second number is the eating hours. It can be hard at first but you adjust and your body gets used to it. I can easily fast for 20+ hours without really feeling much hunger at all, but I didn’t start out that way.

I have tried fasting, but seems hard when the first thing I have is a cup of coffee when I get ready for work. I have a cup of coffee at 6 am. and don't eat until 10:30-11 am. I have tried black coffee but no can do..lol I use a tsp. of sugar and coffeemate creamer with it. Is there anything I can use in my coffee that won't break my fast?

Erythritol for the sweetener and 1 tablespoon of real cream according to the Zero app are okay for fasting for some reasons. I use 1 tablespoon of real cream in my morning coffee don’t consider that breaking my fast. I have never been a breakfast person, so not eating until 12 pm - 2 pm for lunch is fairly easy, but I have to have morning coffee. No real sugar or sweetened creamers. Erythritol is okay though because it doesn’t trigger an insulin response and/or impact your blood sugar levels.

I've been doing a 18:6 slightly differently. I hate missing breakfast for some reason, but dinner I couldn't care less about. So, I eat breakfast (7:00ish) and lunch (12:00ish) and then I'm done for the day. Not sure why but it's easier for me. I put on a few pounds with the Covid-15 and was actually thinking this morning that I'm going to go back to this again tomorrow. Thanks for the motivation! I like to have breakfast 8-10am and supper 6-7:30pm. Sometimes I have an afternoon snack. I really should just shift my breakfast a little later and I'd be doing true IF. I'm usually not that hungry in the morning it's more the habit of it I guess.

For those of you missing coffee or tea, I drink my cinnamon tea as soon as I get up. I don't have anything in it. The flavor really makes it sweet enough. It's the Harney and Sons hot cinnamon spice tea. YUM!

For a clean fast, no you cannot add anything. It’s not about calories, it’s about insulin response. Our insulin spikes with flavors. Some advocate that a tiny amount of heavy cream is ok, so you can try it, but no sugar or sweetener. When I first started fasting I also said no way will I ever be able to do black coffee but I first cut out all sugar in my coffee and only used heavy cream. I just started gradually using less and less cream and now I’m totally fine drinking my coffee black.

My question on the coffee is can I use Silk half and half? It is a combo of almond/coconut milk. I don't use sugar at all. I hesitate to use heavy cream as I have dairy issues, thus the Silk. I can use Silk heavy whipping cream but again it is a coconut/almond only mix.
I have the new Gin Stephens book in my cart. Mulling on whether I want to do Kindle or paperback.
My next question is I have tried to start fasting again. Yesterday. Today I am feeling all kinds of wonky. It does seem to be a carryover from the weekend so I don't know if it is the fasting or something more going on with me. I feel like I am about to pass out and sort of shaky. Throw in some dizzy every now and then. Again, though, I was doing this over the weekend when I was full on eating all day long.

How many hours are you trying to fast for? Have you made sure you are drinking plenty of water? If you continue to feel shaky after making sure you are fully hydrated eat. Try increasing your fasting hours slowly.

SabrinaP I suppose I can do the clean fasting. I did IF back in January and I did the the 16:8 rule. I was also eating Keto and lost 9# by Feb 23. The last weigh in before that pesky little thing called 'Rona reared it's ugly little head and then I just quit. I do need to get back in gear. I hadn't thought about hydration but that could be it. I suppose I think I drink enough but I am not. Time to keep the 32oz tumbler full and drink up. I have been chalking some of it up to anxiety things. I'll drink more water and go from there. Thanks!!

I hope I have the wherewithal to read it when I get home. At this point, all I want to do is go home and flop in my chair. Don't even want dinner. Waiting to hear some news from my girlie is the only thing keeping me awake at this point.

There are different types of fasts, so check with what type you are doing. There are different health benefits for different types of fasts. The zero app has information about some of the different types and what is okay.

Oh my, I really am enjoying this book by Gin Stephens "Fast Feast Repeat." It explains SO much. A lot of it I am running by my 3rd year medical student, and so far so good. She approves though says a lot more research needs to be done. I love Gin's writing style and the studies she shares. This makes sense, and I think I can finally get rid of this menopause weight! I can't wait to see where I am this time next year.

DH and I started with IF three years ago and then have been doing longer fasts on occasion including 3 day Easter fasts. For those of you who say you could never do it I was in that camp and now I am convinced that eating all the time is not necessary and I can function very well without eating, even doing fasted runs. It’s a great tool and I’m glad it’s becoming more mainstream.

I am back to IF 16:8. Things are going well. I did 6 days last week on plan, taking one day off but still watching what I ate. Im losing weight. My question is this - how many days a week do you fast? Everyday? Its easy for me to fast during the week but the weekend I would like some flexibility. So what did you do when you IF? I wanted to return to this thread and answer your question. I finished reading Gin's book, and I can't say enough about it. Understanding what you are doing, how to do it, and why has made ALL the difference in the world for me. I can't recommend her book enough. It is a life-changer. With that said, right now what is personally working for me is a 6 hour eating window each day. I open my window at 12:30 p.m. and close at 6:30 p.m. I have lost 8.8 lbs. since 6/30/20. I have not been able to lose since menopause last year until now. I am so excited. As Gin says, "IF is the heathy eating lifestyle with the benefit of weight loss." Now as far as flexibility, you could choose an eating window and just open/close it at different times each day. So I could open at 6:30 a.m. and close at 12:30 p.m. if I were having brunch with someone. Experiment with it. I hope you find what works for you.

I started back at WW two weeks ago, and combine that with IF. The only thing I have in the morning is my coffee with 1Tbsp cream, I don't consider that breaking the fast really. I eat lunch around noon and try to not eat anything after dinner at 6. Occasionally I'll have a popcorn snack, but that is rare.
So far 6 down! I gained 25 while I sat on my ass and ate all the things while I wasn't doing cake due to Covid.
And a friend and I are doing 100 Morning Meltdown with Beach Body - we do it over Zoom together and are 20 days in!

I have switched to doing 16:8 more out of curiosity than anything after already being very familiar with 5:2 over the years. It's only day 12 and I've done it all bar one day and today I got to lunchtime and realised I hadn't really noticed being hungry. I had to eat then because I was going out and wouldn't have time for anything until about 6pm otherwise which probably would have been too long for me but it was interesting to notice that. I'll see how tomorrow feels but I may be able to go longer I think...
