Finally going to attempt it.
Any advice/suggestions/web sites to recommend that you've personally used?
I'm thinking maybe some large canvases and then some 8x10 or 16x20 in similar frames.
Let me know if you've done it and what worked/didn't.
Thanks Peas.

I don't have a gallery wall, but consider using command strips to hang them. I've been hanging things in my office office (not home office) with them and I'm never going to use nails again. Obviously it won't work with very heavy pieces, but I hung four 17x21 bulletin boards and it worked out great.

I love the idea but I always back out because I think it’s too much “activity” for me visually and makes me tense. Which sucks because they’re so pretty! I think a great place to start is to google images or look them up on Pinterest, really nail down the aesthetic you’re going for. Then recommendations can be specific to the look. I’ve seen where they incorporate circles amongst all the hard lines and it’s great when done well. All color photos? Black and white? Stark and orderly with more crisp lines and even spacing between frames? A mishmash of frame styles or just a couple very coordinated? So many options!Maybe the type of photos you want to display can help you decide the look you’re going for.

I’d suggest making templates of your pieces with kraft paper so you can play with them and move them around until you get an arrangement that works, without putting a bunch of holes in your wall. I’d check on Houzz or Pinterest to see if there are any guidelines for spacing, etc. I’ve seen some rules that say you should have a strong horizontal midline, and then others are more eclectic and unstructured. You need to figure out what is most pleasing to your eye.

I did one in our living room. What worked best for me was to lay everything on the floor in the position I wanted. Then I took pictures and studied them. It kept me from hanging things and then deciding I didn't like it.

I have a salon wall in my main room and going up the stairs. For the larger wall area I laid all the paintings out on the floor so I could figure out the balance and arrangement. I had one large piece so figured out the best place to hand it and then went from there.

if you fnd one you like, just copy it instead of trying to reinvent the wheel. you don't have to copy it exactly, but having something to go by is good. i used a pottery barn catalog one for inspiration and it came out great! and yes, the kraft paper idea is a good one for getting it set up without a bunch of holes in the wall. also command strips will work on most of it. i used a mix of frames from aaron bros, down to dollar store frames (they don't really have good ones anymore though). i would use all color or all b/w (but you can do what you like). here is the one i used as inspo. br.pinterest.com/pin/113293746847521891/it really came out looking nothing like this but i started with the few large frames in the center and worked my way out with all different frames (usually in pairs). i like symmetry, so the pairs controlled the chaos.

Does anyone have any bulk framing/matting sites they use where you can buy lots of frames/mats at a go? It seems like some sites might offer frame "collages" in different overall sizes that you could buy as a package? Like "here's a gallery wall that's 6' x 5' overall, etc" Or would that be too easy?

I did one in our living room. What worked best for me was to lay everything on the floor in the position I wanted. Then I took pictures and studied them. It kept me from hanging things and then deciding I didn't like it. I did this PLUS the following: Got some roll kraft paper 48" and taped 2 together to make it the size I needed. Laid out the frames and played with placement. When I had it how I wanted, I traced all the frames on the paper (using a straightedge to make sure the top level was even). Taped the paper on the wall with painter's tape and made sure the top edge was level (using a level). Placed and put in the nail holes for each frame (through the paper). Took the nails out. Took off the paper. Put the nails back in, hung everything. It takes a while, but it turned out well.

If you google "gallery wall frame set" you'll find some options. TBH, ours are mostly IKEA because you can get the same brand/style in multiple sizes. For mats, I had Michaels cut the matboard I wanted to outer size and I just used acid-free scrapbook supplies to mount to the matboard directly. I didn't want plain white, though. Many frames will come with a plain white mat. (I don't own any super expensive art that I'd need to take out and re-mat/frame for the gallery wall). If it's a piece I don't want to tape mount, I had Michaels cut the mat outer/inner (did my own measuring) sizes. It's a lot cheaper than having them do all the framing. This is how it turned out. A few are askew - I've been too lazy to fix. LOL

I don’t have a spot here, but did in the last house. Everyone commented on it and it was fun for us to look at. I laid out the arrangement on the floor and then let DH put it up. I had all of the same frame style (a black frame from Michael’s), bit in all different sizes. I’ve since used the Command picture hangers that are a bit like Velcro. They work REALLY well and are crazy easy to use. You place them on the frame and then just press the frame to the wall. You don’t need to allow for the nail height/frame widths. And if you put it up a little crooked, you peel off the frame and restick it. It really is that easy.

I did one with color photos of my grandkids.. a few 8x10, the rest 5x7. I like espresso color thin flat frames I get in sets from amazon. I like the frames to be the same.
I started with some frames from Target which are no longer available. They are “floating” frames meaning they are 2 glass pieces so no mat necessary. They were great as they worked well with 8x10 photos plus I could use 2 5x7 photos in the same frame. I also have some with white mats. All hang on a wall with a creamy beige wall paint.
My tip is to use. 2 inch wide blue painters tape between the photos. That helps keep the spaces between an even space. Use a level to put the tape up.

Now that I have 4 beautiful grandkids under age 6... I need more wall space!
I use some 4x6 magnetic folders to hold current fun pics on my fridge... they like to see them.
But I want to branch out to gallery wall pics in the bedroom they sleep in.. the grandkids bedroom.
I’d like to do mostly 5x7 & 4x6 photos & easily changeable as they grow.
Haven’t figured that part out yet.

I have a gallery wall using 11x14 black frames and had the mats cut for the few odd size prints and used the regular mats for the regular prints. I also have another wall with 8 ft picture rails with a mishmash of different frame sizes (5x7 to 16x20) all black. I change these ones up occasionally with my current favourite photos from trips and my nieces and nephews, so the wall works best as I can move them around and take them down as needed.

We did one. I took a long time to commit to it because all of our large wall spaces are shaped like triangles and I wasn't sure how to deal with the vastly different heights on opposite ends of the wall. I finally decided to ignore it. Our's is a little nontraditional as it goes across the entire length of the wall in a rather narrow band, along hallway instead of a room. We wanted everything at mostly eye level so you could see the details since most of the items are personal. But it works. The frames aren't all the same type, it's a mix of blacks and browns to help match to objects that aren't pictures. It's a little hard to get a photo of because it's in a hallway so you can't really back away from it. I don't know, maybe it doesn't really count as a gallery wall?

Too funny that you posted this tonight! We move into our new house next week, and I have a lot of wall space on the stairs.
I want to do something just not sure what yet.
