Mary Kay Letourneau, the controversial Washington middle school teacher who began a sexual relationship with a student when he was just 12, has died of Stage 4 cancer, PEOPLE confirms. She was 58.
According to two sources close to Letourneau, she died after quietly battling the disease for several months. The exact nature of her cancer has not been immediately released.
LeTourneau was a sixth grade teacher when she began the illegal relationship with Vili Fualaau. He was one of her students. They soon began to have sex.
Ultimately, she was sentenced to more than seven years in prison for child rape in connection with their relationship. She twice became pregnant with Fualaau’s children before he was 15, despite court orders aimed at keeping them apart.
By the time she was released from prison, Fualaau was an adult — and he petitioned the court to allow them to see each other. A restraining order against Letourneau was dropped, but Letourneau remained a registered sex offender in Washington state.

I've read a few articles about her death and all of them have referred to her and her student as having "an illegal relationship", "an affair", or "a sexual relationship". She was an adult and he was a 12 year old child!! She was nothing more than a rapist and pedophile!!

Fuck all the publications that aren’t calling her the child rapist she was. I don’t care they eventually married. He was 12 and she was 34. She had two kids with him before he was 15. She was a convicted child rapist.

What kills me is this came on the news earlier tonight (she was a local) as “breaking news.” Really? I mean REALLY?!?

I don’t believe child rapists deserve that much sorrow when they die. I do feel bad for all her children. What a complicated relationship they must have had.

I feel sorry for her children. Those poor kids were already behind the 8 ball and now they don't have a mother. No matter what she did her children probably still loved her and having a parent die of cancer is horrible. I hope they get to go and live their lives anonymously somewhere and the media leave them alone.

God, what a sad life. Those poor children, and her victim. This was my initial reaction too. Just... what a waste of the time she was given. I hope her children do ok and the media leaves them alone. I also hope that Vili can get some closure and lead a good rest of his life free of her shadow.

The selfishness of this woman and her criminal behavior has always sickened me. I hope all six of her kids are able to move forward with happy, healthy lives.

I taught in the same district as Letourneau when all of this was going on. My school was neighboring hers.
I took FLASH (Family Living and Sexual Health) training with her, which was the class for 4-6 grade teachers teaching Sex Ed. Ha!
She really was a piece of work.

I read a book about her long ago that went into some detail about her own childhood. Her father was a really disturbing man, and she was his “favorite.” Her mother was nuts as well and extremely controlling. I swear, abuse just flows across generations, like water running downhill.
I hope that it’s different for her poor children.

Do you have any particular memories of her? No, I didn't really know her. She had a good reputation as a teacher in the district (of course, no one knew what was going on). I sat at her table during trainings a few times. She seemed nice enough. Finding out what she had done was horrific. It really impacted the district financially because the community was outraged and voted no on years worth of levies.

THEIR children.
I’m really annoyed everybody keeps saying ‘her children’ in reaction to her death.
They are his children too.

I think "High Profile Child Rapist Dies" is a more accurate headline.

Fair enough and you are right. However, the news articles I have seen are only showing pics that include their children. This is one odd story hard to forget.

She should have never been allowed near children, not even her own, as she was a predator. She destroyed a 12 year old little boy's life. He should have been out riding his bike or playing video games with his friends, not being molested and raped by a grown woman.

Urgh, she makes my skin crawl. She ruined a young boys life and manipulated him for years. I hope everyone who had that abusive bitch in their lives can have some kind of closure and a better life now she's gone.

What a vile woman. One’s left only to hope her (her own and theirs together) children can have good lives.

Years ago, they were interviewed (I think by Barbara Walters) and I was so disgusted by the way they tried to paint this as some sort of wonderful love affair that survived those that tried to split them up. Imagine them doing this if it was a 12 year-old student and a male teacher?
This woman was SICK. It is absolutely disgusting what she did to him.
And if IRC, she basically left the kids she had with her husband. (edit: looks like on FB, her son with her first husband had a relationship with Villi and their daughters so I guess they were able to somehow forgive).
I know they divorced in 2018; but I sure hope that her victim can now fully live his life.

I am sad for her 6(?) children she had. But more than anything, this is probably the best example to bring up in a discussion about how we see men/women predators. I also feel more sympathy for this woman than I have ever done for a male predator. And I question myself for it. I think it has something to do with the fact that they actually stayed together for years, and the former student/husband/victim was reportedly caring for her in her final days. They obviously had a strong bond. But bonds like that in a man/girl situation is almost seen as Stockholm syndrome.
I hope her children live happy, healthy lives out of the media. I also wish we as a society (myself included) see this woman for what she was. A child rapist. Not a heroine in a tragic lovestory with a somewhat happy ending.

I wonder how she would have felt if someone raped her 12 year old child? She played the "victim" and a "sweet young woman desperately in love" to an audience of millions. It sickens me.

I also wish we as a society (myself included) see this woman for what she was. A child rapist. Not a heroine in a tragic lovestory with a somewhat happy ending. I know what you mean. I have thought she was mentally ill, possibly sexually assaulted by her dad. And have had sympathy on her repeating the cycle. But at the same time, I would have zero sympathy if a male teacher did that to a 12 year old girl. I would not be feeling sympathy for his childhood. No matter how you slice it, having sexual feelings for a 12 year old that you actually taught in the 2nd grade is really, really sick. The length of time of their relationship, that they got married and had more children, should not change the way we view the legitimacy of the relationship. Especially since at one time, they were making money off the relationship (Villi deejaying for a "hot for teacher" night). Sadly, there's this view in life -- especially by men -- that if the teacher is really attractive, that this isn't rape -- it's a fantasy made real. If the woman is hideous, it's rape.
