We just got back from a 2 week trip to the beach, Ocean City, Maryland. We were going back and forth on what to do. But I was outnumbered (the rest wanted to go).
My high school daughter and I only stayed a week because she had pom tryouts. My husband and 20 and 22 yr. old stayed for 2 weeks. My husband went to work today but got sent home to quarantine for 2 weeks. Even though Maryland isn't on our state's list of quarantine states. There go my cleaning plans for 2 weeks. I try to stay away when he is working at home (my idea, not his). He is the only office worker there (he doesn't go into the shop), but they still made him come home.
My husband's family cancelled their family reunion in NC in 2 weeks. So happy about that as I didn't want to stay in a hotel, and put the older members at risk. We are the youngest there by 25 yrs. That state is on our state's list, so we would have to not leave the house for 2 weeks. Not worth it for a weekend trip. But we will miss seeing everyone and miss the fabulous NC food!

My husband and I have been planning to take the kids on an all summer long camping trip to the National Parks since before we even had kids. This was supposed to be the summer. A year and a half ago I ordered an RV trailer from a small family workshop in Canada. The plan was to pick it up this April, get familiar with it, then set out after the kids got out of school in June. Well, early March we found out there'd be a delay getting the trailer, then COVID restrictions began. Trip postponed to 2022 at the earliest and who knows when we can retrieve the now completed and paid for trailer that's on the otherside of the closed border. If we had the trailer we'd plan something.

We cancelled an April trip. Our May trip was cancelled. We're supposed to go on a long weekend trip in three weeks, but we'll probably stay home. Still planning to go on our late September camping trip. We shall see...

DD and I were looking forward to a Disney trip later this year. We were so excited because she and I are the Disney fanatics in the family and since it would only be the two of us we wouldn’t have the wet blankets who could take it or leave it. We were so excited about Avengers Campus.
A week at a cabin in the fall is also being postponed.

We have canceled a trip to NYC, a trip to California and I am not going on a late summer girls trip to Cocoa Beach.
We did go camping once though and we are tentatively planning to rent a cabin in CO for a few days. We'll just be doing the socially distant things we do here (hike, bike and kayak) but at least the scenery will be better. The only potential variable/point of exposure on the planned trip is public restrooms but I've been doing a lot of reading about it and feel like it's a small risk if we do the right things. We have to return my son to college shortly thereafter and will have to deal with public restrooms on that journey as well so might as well get some practice.

So sorry to hear about everyone's cancelled trips, and yes - we are in the same boat with some cancelled trips, even though we never really even got to the point of planning a true vacation for this summer. We took a huge Scandinavian cruise last summer -- so glad we went when we did, as we would not have been able to do it this year, obviously. We typically only take a really big trip every 4-5 years or so, so we would not have been planning anything big for this summer anyway. But it's still hard to know that we won't be going anywhere at all.
Already cancelled: * DD's and my trip to Toronto (planned for Mother's Day weekend) to visit HHOF (we've already been once, but wanted to go back now that CAPS have won the cup) * extended family cruise (planned for October) - New England & Canadian east coast
We got full refunds and/or credit (2 different airlines) for the Toronto trip, and full credit for the cruise deposit. We have not started looking at any sort of "replacement" cruise yet, partly because we have no idea when cruising will be safe again - none of us are in any hurry to get on a cruise ship, especially with my 85+ year old MIL.
We are still tentatively planning a very small family gathering to celebrate my Dad's 90th birthday, but it's still very much in the planning stages and may not happen at all.

I know this will sound so superficial, but I even bought new clothes and a new camera for those trips. Cancelled all. Me, too. We had planned to go "backpacking" in Europe - adult style. Meaning we would each take only a small carry-on/backpack type bag so we could be free to travel around and do whatever without lugging suitcases around (but still staying in hotels). I purchased wrinkle free travel clothes and some pieces I wouldn't normally wear around here. Hopefully they will still fit when I can use them again.

DS18 was supposed to go to CA next month, to visit a friend for a couple weeks. We cancelled the airline tickets when we found out there is a quarantine in place.
I take both my boys to the beach every year. I was considering doing a beach bus trip for the day, but I don't feel at peace with the idea. I don't want to drive there and back in one day either.
Thankfully DS18 got his Germany trip before Christmas - if he would have waited until he graduated to go, it wouldn't have happened.
On a positive note, I am saving money this summer...can't complain about that!

So far we have missed: DD a weekend in Venice for her 18th birthday DS a week in Spain with his mates All of us: a trip to stay with friends
We have cancelled: A 2-3 week trip to the US including an Alaskan cruise scheduled for August
We are big travellers & I’m trying to feel grateful for all we have seen already (between us we visited 20 different countries last year) & I know one day we will travel again (I just don’t know when yet)
DH & I are going away for 2 nights this weekend to celebrate our anniversary. Just an hour or so away (Oxford) & staying in a suite so we have space to stay inside when necessary. We’ve got some outdoor activities planned & then room service/take-away so we’re limiting our risks.

I just rethought my vaca. Typically, I take a beach vacation out of the country each year with a college chum. This year, we thought ok, what is it I truly get/want out of a vacation right now. A. Water, B. Deplug from work/screens, the world and C. Cocktails! Soooooo we rented a house with a pool out in the boonies of the state (seriously, town population of 250) and just chilled. Laughs were still had, rest was still achieved and came back feeling like I got away from the grind. Vacations don't have to be grand to be fun. Just think about what is it you truly want to get out of it and innovate!

We had a 2 week trip planned to England/Scotland -we were going with our 2 adult sons and our dil. That was supposed to happen in May - we hope to reschedule for next year.
We are going to the beach at the end of the month. We can drive there in one long day, will do a Walmart pickup for groceries, staying in a beach house, won’t eat out or shop. The beach is not crowded - the trip seems pretty safe to me. DH returns to the office (university professor) in August and I am more worried about that exposure than our exposure at the beach.

Yep. I've now cancelled 3 big ones - all to Disney. A girls trip in early may, our family vacation in August and the November one I rescheduled when I cancelled August. And I'm having serious fomo seeing Instagram folks etc in Disney. I know it's not safe and I wouldn't go but damnit I want to.
Plus we cancelled our yearly local trip to a Christmas themed amusement park that we do in the summer. The kids look forward to it but we just didn't want to masked the whole time and put ourselves at risk...
It's sad and disheartening when I see other people having fun and obviously these are first world problems but difficult nonetheless

We never got our northern Minnesota vacation booked--tried a few times to look into it again, but something always popped up.
DH is going fishing with a friend in a couple of weeks and I might see about taking the boys to Wisconsin Dells that weekend, just to do something. A staycation at the hotel next door to our local amusement & water park would make more sense, but seems so boring.

We never got anything booked to cancel. We would have gone to Hilton Head Island in May if this were a normal year. We decided to wait until fall. Now I think this will be the first year since 1991 that we don't go due partially to the virus and partially to family illness.
I can't even get myself to book a weekend away and DH doesn't feel comfortable staying in a hotel on the road so he isn't going to see his kids and grandchildren this summer.

We only had one vacation that was fully planned cancelled: Yellowstone in beginning of June.
But I had planned to take my high school senior on one last college visit to the Midwest and that was never done obviously- and he picked a school in state - yay!
I’m also apparently saving a lot of money - my credit card bill has been half of what it normally is....

redfraggle18, were you going to go to Holiday World in Santa Claus IN? We love that place and visit almost every summer when we go see family. I live near a lot of amusement parks living in So Cal, but we never go to them because Holiday World is the bomb diggity. ghislaine, while I am sad for everyone's cancelled vacation, yours really struck me. What an epic adventure you guys had planned. Hope you are able to get your trailer soon so you can do some mini trips.

No. We are in the northeast so it's Santa's village in the white mountains of new Hampshire. Maybe similar?

Our vacation is in our RV so I'm not canceling. Orlando to Ashville, NC for 10 days with a stop in SC on the way. Since I'm in my own RV I feel comfortable with physically distancing ourselves from others. It I were taking a hotel vacay that requires eating out, I'd be second guessing it.

I’ve canceled 3 trips planned in the Before Times. Now I’m contemplating taking the kids to a beach house on the coast for a socially distanced summer trip.

Hope you can find some fun, enjoy the summer!

Yep, we also cancelled our Texas beach vacation that we do every single year. With hospitals filling up in Texas, we just really didn't want to take the risk of being away from home along with the at least somewhat increased risk travel brings. And yeah, I'm having a major pity party about it.

I'll be sure to check this one out when I get out that way. My grandfather was the first Santa Claus at Knotts Berry Farm. I'm not sure if Santa is there year round anymore, but back then he was there everyday. Maybe that is where my love of holiday themed amusement parks comes from.

Yep.
We had skipped the idea of a tropical vacation this past February - DH and I had just been on a big trip to Disneyland and California so another trip a few months later seemed silly.
We rented a cottage on Georgian Bay, within decent distance of the marina my brother docks his boat at. A super nice cottage, that would sleep all the kids and their partners, right on the water, with a dock my brother could anchor at. And accessible by land, so we didn't have to rent a boat to get to it once we got up there. It took a while to find one that fit what we were looking for.
We had until the beginning of June to cancel it, and mid-May I hit the cancel button on AirBnb. We were to check in on June 27th, and check out July 4th. We'd have been there over the Canada Day holiday. It was a gorgeous weather week too.
And while we could maybe try to find one for later in August now, we decided to take the deposit and put it down on a hot tub for the backyard instead. The low deck support is just finished and we are waiting word on arrival and a delivery date.
So while we are sad we didn't get to spend a week at a cottage, we are thrilled we will have many years of enjoyment in our own backyard.
(and insanely glad we got to experience Disneyland and the California coast last fall!!)

Hope you can find some fun, enjoy the summer! Thank you, I'll look into Echo. We were thinking of spending a week with my in-laws at their camp but they don't socially distance very well so that's outside of my comfort zone. Luckily, our property is almost a nature adventure park of it's own so we've already done some camping, foraging, campfires, staying up late for fireflies, hanging out in the hammock and HugglePod, and lots of dips in the pool. Plus we hatched chicks! My husband needs me to drive him back from an ophthalmologist appointment soon so I'll take the kids to visit the whale tails nearby while he's in the appointment. I think they'll consider that a treat!

We cancelled our trip to Israel.
We did spend a week at a local lake and it was dreamy. Generally I like to travel further but this was way better than nothing.
We were already packed for Israel. We packed on a Monday for a Thursday departure. We had purchased travel pants and good jackets, etc. I bought a new travel purse. On the Tuesday Israel closes its borders and we had to cancel. On the Thursday our country locked us in and recommended against international travel.
In reality we were lucky that Israel closed its border. If we had flown out Thursday we would have had to fly home Friday after Canada asked for all citizens to return home.

We cancelled a family spring break trip to NYC right before broadway went dark. We cancelled an April DH and I only trip to Mexico for our 20th anniversary a few days later. We would have planned a summer trip and a winter break trip. Both of those won’t happen. I would have gone to San Antonio to meet my new nephew.
So when all is said and done 5 vacations that would have happened haven’t. We may have thrown a quick trip to Phoenix to see DH’s parents which would make 6.
Everything prepaid for NYC and Mexico was refunded without problem, except the airfare. I don’t understand why the airlines don’t have to refund. We are sitting on a lot of airline credit that they keep extending. But I’m betting they will expect us to use it before we are comfortable flying again.

2020 has sucked for travel even though it was nothing major. I dropped out of a girls' weekend to Newport pre-Covid because I was having such significant nerve pain pre back surgery and I didn’t want to be a drag on my friends. No refund.
Just kissed our Delaware beach vacation goodbye last week, three weeks before we were supposed to go because they’ve recently climbed onto the quarantine state list for CT. No refund.

We had our 2 week trip to Israel cancelled. We still haven't seen the refund for that from the tour company. They keep promising that it will come. Thankfully our travel insurance will cover the cost of the tour company ends up not refunding our money. I am sympathetic to their loss of business but it's a huge amount of money!
