I feel like I'm going to get *SHUNNED*, because I am displaying a Covid symptom when I'm out and about.
It has to be a psychological thing. The cough starts when I put on a mask.

I always have a slight cough because of reflux issues, I'm terrified of coughing in the supermarket in case I get beaten to death with a French stick!

I cough and clear my throat a lot due to allergies and I've been concerned about having a coughing fit on one of my rare trips to a store. Hasn't happened yet. Hugs to you.

I cough in my mask all the time. A combination of allergies and asthma. I always announce "I don't have Coronavirus!"

I had a coughing fit the last time I was in the grocery store, just choked on my own spit like a bonehead - but I could. not. stop. So embarrassing!

I started coughing at the ice rink during my kids practice last week. I ran and hid in the bathroom until it went away. I just had a little tickle in my throat. I stupidly forgot my water bottle, and the rink owner has closed all the water fountains (💖🙌). I was mortified.
Strange times we are living in.

I can go about 8-10 mins in my mask holding in the urge to cough, then I can’t any longer. I was thinking I was sensitive to particles from the mask, it never dawned on me that it might all be mental. Hmmmm

I was getting my hair done yesterday when I was overcome by an intense tickle in my throat. We both had masks on, but I was coughing and scrambling for a piece of hard candy in my purse while declaring “It’s just a throat tickle! It’s not the virus!”

I was literally going into Kaiser to pick up a prescription and something went down the wrong pipe.. instantly started coughing on my way in..then started laughing and coughing.. I was telling the nurses manning the doors.. 'wrong pipe wrong pipe' then she started laughing. I thought for sure I was going to be taken down.

I do think it is slightly mental. I walk the dog in the morning when there is hardly anyone around (probably one person within each 10 minute span). And it always seems to be during that time that I get a tickle in my throat. I"m like WHYYYY! Then I just try to not make eye contact after that.

Me too. I also notice that I breathe differently when I have a mask on. I think it's because I already have to work a bit harder to breathe out than I used to, and with the mask on I have to work even harder, and that makes me cough.

I have a few stores whose cleaning products make me cough.
I thought it was psychological at first too, until I realized it was only certain stores.

I've been coughing since June so it's either allergies or a med I started taking. I cough some when I'm not chewing gum or just after I spit it out, first in bed, talking a lot and thirsty, in-laws house with the a/c they use and maybe when I'm a bit annoyed. It's embarrassing.

No, but I went for a walk this afternoon and I walked past landscapers putting down mulch which I think had something I'm allergic to in it... because as soon as I got home I started sneezing and now one side of my head is congested and my nose keeps running. I feel like I need to wear a sign that says IT'S JUST ALLERGIES. Maybe a scarlet letter A... for allergies?

I made a quick run to a grocery store yesterday. I always make sure to take my allergy meds, use a drying nasal spray, and use my inhaler before leaving my house. For some reason, I started sneezing multiple times as I walked down an aisle. The sneezing and my panic at doing so led to a choking coughing spell. There was a couple walking toward me and I couldn't stop sneezing and coughing long enough to reassure them that it was the first time in 4 weeks that I had left my house and wasn't sick, but they totally ignored me and my sneeze/cough fit. They didn't even look up. I was sure they were going to freak out at me, but they didn't react at all. We all had masks on, but I was certain they would at least comment or angrily tell me to leave the store. Whew. I have no idea what brought that on, and I was mortified. I think we are all so afraid of everything that we are having anxiety symptoms.

It may NOT be a psychological thing. It may be that whatever soap or detergent you washed it with is causing you to cough. You might be able to tolerate it when you are wearing clothes washed in it but the masks are right up against your nose and you may not be able to tolerate the scent in the detergent or fabric softener that close. Honestly, I'm wearing the mask to protect me from all the extra cleaners in the stores. I'm very chemically sensitive and I have a better chance of surviving a virus than I do chemicals and perfume.
I make my masks out of 100% cotton that I've had longer than a year (that helps the scent caused from being in a store, etc. to dissipate) and have been washed well with vinegar and fragrance free soap. I went in Dollar Tree in March and all the extra cleaners triggered a coughing fit half-way into the store. I had to run outside and get in the car. I finally quit coughing but not before I tossed my cookies. Fortunately, I hadn't eaten much for breakfast. And yes, I had some water in the car and poured it over the pavement.
Anyway, it just may be a reaction to a scent in the mask for some of you. Also, if I get too hot, which I do a lot wearing the mask, that also triggers me coughing, especially if I'm having to talk a lot to a customer or a friend.
