I try to treat people well when they are doing hard physical labor for me. So when getting ready for my movers, I emptied out the furniture, and tried to have my shit together in general by clearing them a path, opening the door repeatedly as they went in and out, etc.
They had to carry the 2 heaviest items upstairs at the new place, and by then, they were tired. Not complaining, but I could see their exertion level, and it was a challenge for them.
One of the 2 items was my main dresser (6 drawers, which they didn't remove, for some reason...). I didn't think it would fit well in my new master, so I had them place it in an upstairs bedroom.
Can you see where this is going?
After they set up the bed in my bedroom, I could see that the dresser would fit NO PROBLEM. I know-- I should have measured BEFORE. BELIEVE ME-- I have measured SO MANY spaces and items during this move.... I just honestly felt the dimensions of my new room looked a lot smaller.
So, I asked them to haul that heavy mother back down the stairs. They were nice, and I apologized, but I felt quite embarrassed.
Have you had any of those embarrassing moments you'd like to share? Maybe with moving, or remodeling-type situations? Please, share, so I won't feel so badly.

Tip them well. You aren’t the first.
I don’t know that I’ve done that, but I have had movers put items in the wrong room because they were rushing or didn’t want to go up/down stairs. I do make them move those boxes.

I’m sure you tipped them well. And were apologetic. And acted grateful. I think “That” customer is the one that doesn’t take their well being or feelings into consideration and it shows in their attitude.

That's pretty standard, I think. Last time I moved the moving company told me I could leave clothes in the dresser, and then they just wrapped the whole thing, drawers and all, in plastic wrap (to secure to drawers for transport). I suspect drawers are actually safest in the dresser (best protected against damage). Also, I'm sure you were very nice to them which made the whole thing a million times more tolerable and if it helps any, down's always easier-- gravity does some of the work.

I’m wincing along with you. I’ve been that customer. I take extra care to feed my movers & tip exorbitantly. Also, give positive feedback to their company. So many people do nothing but complain. I think the positive feedback is sadly almost a shock, but sincerely appreciated.

That is so common. We did something similar during my MIL's move.

When we moved here it was a really hot 90 degree summer day. The movers propped the front door open, so no A/C. My craft room is in our finished attic on the 3rd floor. So, they had to haul all of those heavy boxes of paper, photos, albums etc up 2 flights of stairs. We gave them lots of drinks and bought lunch for them, but I still felt really bad.

I can't imagine you rate anywhere near the worst of those they've moved. I wouldn't worry about it. You were paying them to move your furniture and unfortunately they had to do an extra lift, but that's what they do. You didn't scream or call them names. You were kind and understanding about how difficult the work was. I can't imagine everyone they've moved has been that good to them!
We had a new counter put in this summer and the guy went out of his way to reschedule someone else so he could get ours in before my surgery. We didn't ask, he was just that kind. We sent him a nice gift card to a local restaurant. If you feel that bad, send a thank you card with a little something extra.

Ugg that sucks but as long as you were kind and apologetic about it and they could tell you were genuinely sorry for making them move it twice then it doesn't make you THAT customer.
