CBS released a poll this morning that was taken between 8-19-2020 to 8-21-2020. linkThe question.. The number of deaths from COVID-19 has been R. D. Independent Acceptable 57%. 10%. 33% Not Acceptable. 43%. 90%. 67% Another question - Is America better off than 4 years ago? All Voters. Republicans Yes. 35%. 75% No 65% 25% Question for Republican Voters only.. Why is America Better Off today? Confidence in trump. 82% Economy. 70% Democrats not in power. 70% Own Family Finances. 64% The take away from just these couple of questions is if you are a Republican, it’s acceptable that over 170,000 Americans have died from a virus in 6 months. And America is better off today than 4 years ago, even though we are in the middle of a pandemic with high unemployment that could possibly change how we live our lives for years. And the reason the Republicans feel they are better off is because they have confidence in trump.

I wish I was surprised.
In April, there were twenty-thousand-some American deaths, and people were aghast.
Now in August, with 176,000+ deaths, and so many people are just sooooo bored with it. The death toll has become a meaningless number.

How f’inf sad this is no matter how small the group. Seriously and deeply and profoundly sad and heartbreaking. I truly believe that people generally are awful now and that good ones are an aberration. I am not sure how much more my heart can take without breaking beyond repair. Hope is just about gone.

Well that is just...deplorable. And the sentiment represented in that poll is exactly why I will never again vote for any republicans EVER.

Not surprised at all. Per my comment on the Rand thread, Democrats are the source of all our country’s woes in their estimation. Facts and the truth have no impact on their beliefs.

Well if they got polled, they’re not dead, right?

Yeah. Most of my Republican family members have no issue with the number of deaths at all. Corporations and businesses Trump deaths of individuals in their minds. And having COVID deaths doesn’t change their attitude. Reminds me of Christians who allow family members to die because they refuse medical care ... cause it was an act of God. They get so giddy over it.

Of course they don’t. They are still saying it’s ‘those’ people the ones with ‘conditions’ or ‘old’ or ‘poor’ and if they die then that’s less $$$ that need to be paid out in social security, Medicare, Medicaid, disability, and welfare. I’ve literally seen comments like these. Along with it’ll be gone on 11/5 yea? And WTF are you gonna do when it worse in 11/5? Hmmm? Because Covid isn’t going anywhere until we can work together. It’s the group consequence of all group consequences. If we can figure out how to work together it’ll keep on rolling.
I would bet some Republicans think the higher the number the better ( unless it affects them directly )
Like I said in another thread I have to take a break reading internet comments because damn people are mean. It saps my faith in my fellow human

What are the unemployment numbers since Trump has been in, especially in the Republican states? Pre a d post pandemic. I'm just curious how much they have gone up or down or fluctuated back and forth and his minions still praise him.

A contagious disease with no vaccine and no medical treatment is just going to go poof because of the election. But I mean, even if it just DID disappear (which we know it won't), so what? There is still 176.000+ people who have passed away. Are they going to be resurrected after Election Day? Are their families/friends/loved ones going to be over it and life will be great for them again because Coronavirus is over? Of course not. Their family member/friend is still gone. The lack of compassion overwhelms me.

I can’t even begin to comprehend the disconnect between Trump and the current situation with the pandemic and the economy.

Bill Kristol...
”Lots of people (rightly) appalled that 57% of Republicans in the CBS/You Gov poll consider the number of U.S. fatalities from coronavirus so far to be acceptable. On the other hand, given the power of hyper-partisanship, 43% of Rs finding it unacceptable may be more noteworthy.”

Yup. Democrats are evil. Plain and simple. They think Trump is great and cannot be swayed otherwise.
Facts don't matter. Untrue anecdotes are what they hang their hats on

I swore I wasn't going to read any political posts lately, because I'm just tired of being ANGRY. But, I was curious and had to look. I have no words. And I just CANNOT accept that *one* of my family members still loves the cheeto. What REALLY shocks me even more is that she is a verrry educated, smart person who does NOT just believe anything she reads. But she still INSISTS that he was "chosen by God"

The way in which the rest of the world is conveniently ignored (because surely they cannot be ignorant of the losses around the globe...can they??) by anyone who thinks it's all a ruse against Trump is well...terrifying? Mind boggling? Ridiculous?

I would bet some Republicans think the higher the number the better ( unless it affects them directly ) I just realized it has been more then 2 weeks and Rep Louis Gohmert has not made an appearance, has he? Did he get Covid-19 after his positive?!? But I mean, even if it just DID disappear (which we know it won't), so what? dt is announcing convalescent plasma is the new best thing.... even though the doctors are not touting it any longer.... They have not seen the proof of working, more like some people were just getting better and the plasma was not the fix... As 175,000 have died! Months long suffering....

It really is important to pay attention to that 43% unacceptable!

It saps my faith in my fellow human Wow. I have heard most of these comments but not the one about less payouts on social security and such. Wow. That’s cold. I heard a lot of these comments but not hearing as many since I was blocked from a local FB group. They didn’t allow politics but ignored the ones making these kinds of statements but blocked me for having an opposing view. It’s better for my health not seeing them though. I’ve always considered myself conservative but I can’t believe the cult like following of Trump. I just don’t get it. It’s all surreal. I always thought he was a tool but now it’s just beyond belief. I couldn’t believe it when he was elected but didn’t think one person could do so much damage and cause so much division in such a short time. I wonder what they are going to do when it’s not over come November 4th. For the record I think the numbers are totally unacceptable and while we are doing ok I don’t think what’s happening with the economy is good. I don’t think the country is better today than four years ago at all. So many people are hurting and it’s not all because of Covid snd our reaction to it.

I shouldn’t be, but am still surprised at how many people disregard these numbers. The mental gymnastics are crazy. They think the death toll is artificially inflated. They think hospitals and such are attributing deaths to COVID as a way to “get more money” Or score political points. And then there are those that think the number of positive cases In the US is fake too - they truly believe that folks are registering for testing sites, not showing up to be tested for some reason, and then still getting a positive test. I guess if you don’t believe it’s as bad the media says it is, then of course it’s acceptable. SMDH

How do you even answer “acceptable” to that poll question without an ounce of self-disgust or reflection?
I can’t fathom it.
