So, I've been a SAHM for a while. But I've kept busy with volunteering. The past 11 years, I've held an elected position on a PTA Executive Board, including president of both a unit (school) PTA, and the council PTA.
I've presided over high 6 figure budgets, managed over 60 volunteers, emceed countless events.
Last winter I took a tutoring job with the school district, on a lark. It was just two days a week, a couple of hours a day, and that was unfortunate, because I absolutely loved it! I remember my volunteering work with elementary students through the years as, "this was fun, but I'm glad it was only an hour!"
Tutoring Middle and High School students has been a joy! What a shame that it's was only a few hours a week. I could do this work forever.
I now find myself in need of a full time job, and there's an opening in the ROP office mentoring high school kids, and oh, I want it bad!
The problem is that they require four professional letters of reference, and I do not have that number of past employers that are from less than 18 years ago, and I couldn't find them in any event. (My last full time job was as a store manager for Blockbuster Video - yeah, I doubt I'm going to find a reference there.)
So, beyond the teacher I tutored for, who took my suggested letter of reference and improved it immensely, I'm trying to get people who I've worked closely with in the PTA to recommend me.
I'm getting a lot of people who agree to be references, but not sign a letter. I finally got the Superintendent of schools, who I worked closely with as a unit and council president for four years, plus as a volunteer on a committee working to pass a school parcel tax to agree. That was pulling teeth, as she is obviously very busy. I haven't received it yet.
So frustrating! The application process closes tomorrow at 5, and they are very strict that you must submit all required information to be considered.
Wish me luck, I'll need it!
