I walk right by the greeters without acknowledgement. I am rarely, if ever, stopped by them and get irritated when I do. I have no interest to be stuck in the glop of people around the front door who can't figure out how the hell to get in or out of the store. So I walk in with purpose. I also do not want to be saddled with whatever flyer they are handing out at that time. \ That said, your comment was inappropriate. Gobsmacked at your arrogance.

I don't go very often but I am never even asked if I have a card.

As with the others, it never occurred to me not to have my card out. I dig for it once I get out of the car. And I have heard of people who go through the store, shop and don't realize you have to have a card to check out.
As for the food, my kids love the pretzels, and DH loves the berry sundae. The pizza is ok. Costco on the other hand has the warehouse club cafe crown with the Chicken bake. LOVE that thing, and I don't even want to think of how many calories are in it.

I have only been a Sams member this year and have only shopped there a few times but I have never needed to show my card. In fact, the last two times I have been in there hasn't even been a door greeter.

(Not really sure how to reply to that as I don't see it as arrogance)

Sorry I'm back so late, I just haven't been able to log on.
I guess I'm irritated because there's no consistency in the policy of card checking. 90% of the time, I don't have to show my card. Only with her.
I wasn't looking for any accolades on my behavior, I put that information out there almost as a punishment to myself...I don't usually act that way and I was embarrassed I did. Calling myself out makes me not be ae to hide it..if that makes sense.
I'm totally fine with getting my purchases checked.
ETA: for those judging me, I did go and leave a card for her a few moments ago with a $10 coffee card in it and an apology. She was not there (only works two days a week the manager said). I explained what happened yesterday and she said that it's NOTrequired to show a card upon entry but it is to purchase. She said that this one particular employee is "a bit of a Nazi". HER WORDS. Manager said that there are areas you can make purchases in and don't need a card for. They also allow non members to come in and look around before joining.

Simple solution - just say a quick apology to her when you see her next. It will make her have a better day, and you'll feel better. Sometimes, it's good to just stand and realize how much rudeness retail employees deal with. I would be the politeness employee who would get fired. How hard is it so say please and thank you? We teach our kids, but when you snatch the brownie bag from the Starbucks employee and walk away without even acknowledging her, it's rude. (yeah that was my morning view today). Anyway, I've called people worse things, but if you see her regularly, it might just be a nice thing to do ETA- I just see you posted above me. I think that was REALLY nice to drop off a card. And for the other gal who refuses to acknowledge ... it's rude. I wonder how it would be if you were ignored at your job.

But I'm glad you did something nice for this lady.

I always have mine in my hand when I go in. You must be a member to shop there, the card is the proof. I can't don't see the big deal about having to show it. If you don't want to show it, shop a non-membership required store.

I never knew you didn't need to show it. Wonder when they changed that policy? We've been with Sam's for probably 10 years now and always have our card in hand when entering the store.

I have to agree with Peabay, that was awful that her manager said that to you. What a jerk. If he/she has an issue with the employee checking cards, it should be between the manager and the employee. That comment made to you was in poor taste. Glad you went in and tried to apologize to her, hope you'll do it in person the next time you see her!

It was very sweet of you to leave a card and a GC for the greeter lady.

That's great about the card and GC.
Everyone has a time in their lives where they act inappropriately. One time, when I was pregnant, I was on the phone with the exterminator service. The lady said something I didn't like, and then I went OFF on her, in the heat of the moment not even registering how bad I sounded.
After I got the phone, I realized how I had behaved, and called back and apologized, and she accepted my apology.
None of us are perfect...the fact that you had the guts to come on here and own your behavior says a lot about you!
I just kind of wave my card at the greeter as I walk by...they've never stopped me yet!

I still think you owe her a face-to-face apology next time you see her.

I thought this thread was interesting as I work at one of these places! As far as the op's comments regarding the lack of consistency of being asked for her card upon entering, there could be a few reasons. The first and foremost would be the personality of the person at the door. Where I work, the employee at the door is supposed to see everyone's card upon entering. As we have found, many people really just have a grand problem with showing it and by golly, they are GONNA get into the warehouse by any means without showing it... even if they have to lie and say they are going to the pharmacy or to buy alcohol. So, it is easier for us to not actually FIGHT with the member walking in than to, what, forcefully detain them? Haha! Tackle them?
Of course, our management is aware of [some] people's pissy attitudes and we WILL let you in without the NFL move. Oh, and don't think we don't know it was you when you refused to show it at the door and are now standing at the register, holding up the line, just now realizing that you need your membership card and you can't find it anywhere.
I would go absolutely berserk if I worked at the front door. I have said "you can tell a lot about a person by their willingness to show you their membership card."

Just because the manager uses that phrase too doesn't mean it's anywhere NEAR appropriate.

We have gone to Sam's for years now. I have just gotten used to showing my card and always have it in my hand as we go through the door. I just show it, smile and go on about my way. One thing our Sam's just recently started was asking for your card at the deli. I was surprised when they asked to see my card before they would ring up our food/drink purchase. I don't know if it was someone new or a new policy that you have to show your card before you can by food at the deli. Either way, it doesn't bother me. I know it is an employee who is just doing what their manager requires them to do.

I don't understand people who think rules don't apply to them.

I don't understand people who think rules don't apply to them. But the manager confirmed that is NOT actually a rule.

According to the membership agreement I found online, it is.
"Please show your card when entering a Sam's Club and when checking out at a register."

To be honest, I always have my card ready and just show it to them as I am walking in the door. This always pisses off dh because he thinks since they scan your card at the checkout, what's the difference?

I'm a member of both Sam's and Costco and show my card at each store. I put it in my pocket when I'm getting my shit together before leaving the car, then just flash it when I walk in. I've never had anyone actually check it to make sure it's current or anything, so I suppose the entry door check isn't the most effective way to make sure only current members go into the store.
Still, I don't have a problem with it. I'm more irked at the line to leave that's backed up while the cart contents are matched with receipts. I know, I know, it's the way it's done, but it still makes me roll my eyes.

I show my card every time I enter Sams and Costco. I'm not a fan of Sam's for many reasons but I'm not going to buck the system and breeze by without flashing the card.

I guess I still don't get the "dig your heels in" attitude by some about showing your card at the door. If you're a member and you have a card, just have it ready to show when you enter. Why is it such a big deal?

I have a Costco membership and always show my card on the way in. It is automatic, like when I scan my card at the Y.
