I go to Sams club about once a week. There is a revolving schedule of three different greeters. Two of them ask me if I have a Sams Club card as I walk in the door. I say yes and they say have a great day. There is one greeter (all the greeters are 65+) who asks if I have a card and when I say yes, she tells me I have to pull it out and show her. Every time.
Are you forced to show your card when you walk in the door? Every other Sams I go to you don't pull out your card til you pay, they don't even ask.
Shame on me, but I was really rude to her today. I was in a major hurry (not her fault) and she made a huge deal about me having to show her my card and I called her a Sams Nazi and kept walking while she kept calling after me. (No judgment necessary, I'm already embarrassed by my actions, and I'm coming clean in a public forum).
Just wondering what your Sams does..is it policy, or is it just her?

For some reason this really tickled me. I'm headed to bed but I hope this thread is epic by the time I have my morning tea.

I don't have a Sam's club membership (there aren't any around here anymore) but I do have a Costco membership. I show my card every time I go in. Not sure if it's required but I think it is.

We have to show it every time. I'm super friendly with the greeters (like we chat when I come in and when I leave and I know their kids and grandkids names and the highlights of their week as well as Judi and Monas medical issues. ha) I still have to show my card. Sams Club policy- if they don't check they can get written up.

Sometimes they ask, sometimes they don't. It's no biggie, I make sure I have it ready. Your gal is only doing her job.

I have a costco card and am required to show it upon entering. No big deal to me.

We don't do Sam's anymore, we like Costco way more so that's where we go now. We always automatically show our card when we go in, and they do look for us to show it. We always automatically had it out when we had a membership to Sam's before we had Costco here. I don't think it's any big deal, I pull it out of my wallet and stick it in my coat or pants pocket so it's ready when I go to check out.

I pull my card out and put it in my pocket before I get out of my car. I hate digging for it. I always show it, but noticed yesterday when I was doing some photos (which is right by entrance) that people were walking past greeter waiving their card. I'm sure she couldn't tell if it was a Sam's card or not. She didn't stop them.
I also wouldn't fault someone for doing their job. Customers do get really snippy waiting at the exit when their receipt is show and merchandise checked. Again, they are just doing their job.

I wouldn't know, because I always make sure to have mine out before I walk in the front door. It IS a membership club, after all. Why shouldn't I be expected to show my membership card?

I just ignore them and keep walking.
My BFF has a membership and she gets so pissed when they ask her for a card when she walks in the door. I go with her all the time and she always just keeps walking and she's never been followed or stopped or anything. Most of the time they don't even ask though. Her reasoning is that you have to be a member to buy anything. They scan your card before they will check you out. But you don't need to be a member to just go inside and look around. I don't know if there are official rules about that but honestly it makes sense to me.
You actually don't have to have a Sams card to eat at the cafe inside Sams at any if the ones around here. They have a bar code on the register and just scan it for everyone who orders. They don't ask anyone for their card. Once I figured that out I've gone to eat in there several times even though I'm not a member.

I feel bad for that greeter who was just doing her job. In addition to feeling bad on here and outing yourself on a public forum, I hope you go back and apologize to the person who you treated badly, especially since you say you are a regular there and would have the opportunity to do so. Melissa

I was curious (I'm a Costco member) but I did go to the Sam's Club website and it says right in the membership agreement that "Members are requested to show their cards when entering Sam's Club and when checking out."
I always just have mine out when I go in at Costco. I'm a rule follower, in general.

I do the same. It is their job to check, if you don't like it, then don't shop there. As soon as I park, I pull my card out of my wallet and walk in. Easy peasy.

I always show my card and wouldn't think poorly of the greeter if she or he asked me to show it if I didn't have it out. She was doing her job.
At our Costcos, you can't just go in and look around without a membership. If you don't have your card, the only place you can go is to the membership desk to get a replacement one before entering the store.

At mine you can, but you have to go sign in at the front desk, where they ask you for your name and driver's license number. I refused to give it the first time I was there-- they have ZERO reason to need that-- and they were fine with that, I suspect because they just opened, but I don't know if they would still be okay with that opt out. The second time I was there, the line was so disorganized at the service desk, I stood there for ten minutes with nothing happening, so I just left, and haven't been back.

(No judgment necessary, I'm already embarrassed by my actions, and I'm coming clean in a public forum). Just wondering what your Sams does..is it policy, or is it just her? The Nazi comparison was completely inappropriate. It really bothers me when people do this. It says right in the membership agreement that you signed that employees will request to see your card. You signed the agreement and essentially said, "Okay, I want to shop here so I'm cool with that," just like you accepted that you're required to let someone review the contents of your cart when you leave. It also said in the agreement that your membership can be revoked at any time, so you might want to keep that in mind the next time you decide to compare some poor lady who's just doing her job to a group of people who committed heinous, unspeakable acts against innocent people. I have no idea if the greeters at my Costco or Sam's Club (when I shopped there in New England) are "hard core" because I always have my card out. It's just not that hard. If I were a Sam's Club greeter, I would lose my mind fifteen minutes into the shift. I can tell it's not a super fun, cushy job. The least I can do is refrain from giving those people a hard time because I don't have my act together and can't seem to manage pulling a card out of my wallet. I realize you said you don't want judgement. If that was really the case, you probably should have cut to the chase and just asked a question about the policy regarding having to display a membership card. I don't know if you thought the Nazi quip was going to get some laughs or if you were looking for some "you go girl" feedback and that's why you shared all the extra information. Regardless, you agreed to Sam's Club's rules. Don't be a jerk to the people who have to enforce them.

There are a lot of things I get worked up about. Showing a membership card that I chose to purchase when I enter that store isn't one of them. Honestly it never even occurred to me not to have it in my hand when I enter the store. If it bothered me or was a PITA I simply wouldn't purchase the membership or shop there.
I'm just curious as to why you have such a strong opinion about purposefully not showing your card to enter.
I'm a very black and white thinker. In my world, membership club means membership card. Membership card means show it to prove you are a member.

Here in CA you can say, "I'm going to the pharmacy" and they let you in. I didn't realize until recently that you don't have to be a member to use a Costco pharmacy.

In order to purchase anything (except for food in the cafe like I mentioned above) you have to actually scan your card to start the transaction. Also checking your card at the door just seems redundant to me. A waste of employee labor. If they are checking your membership (and actually verifying it in the computer - that it's you and it's paid/up to date) at the register, why have someone "check" it (just waving it at them when it could be expired or not yours or fake) at the door?

Here you have to show your Costco card to buy anything behind the counter at the pharmacy. You always need to show your card to the greeter and when checking out. Otherwise they will ask you. It's their job.

I mean, when I'm in the mood for junk food. I like their berry sundae, too. It's also just convenience, there's one very close to the movie theatre we go to so it's an easy place to grab food after a movie.

I always have mine out so not sure if they require me to or not (Costco member).. although it they do look for it. Your comment of her being "Sam Nazi" reminded me of the Soup Nazi on Seinfeld.

They check it at the door to make sure you have one so that you don't get all the way to the register and inconvenience the checker and everyone behind you because you forgot your card and need to have all your information retrieved. If you can't produce a card at the entrance because you forgot it, they send you to member services for a temporary pass. Checkout speed is a big deal at Costco and Sam's. They try to be as efficient and fast as possible. It's one of the things I love about shopping there. I'm guessing they also want to avoid people coming in without a membership and grazing on free samples all day, but speedy checkout is the main concern.

So it says "requested" not "required"? A request was made, by a member of staff who was doing their job properly, but the OP was of the opinion that the regulations didn't apply to her, and she also thought it sensible and mature to compare this legitimate request to the regime that devastated most of Europe and was responsible for the most unspeakable atrocities. I'll be honest, I don't follow her train of thought.

I think their food is pretty decent for a cheap and quick bite too. And if you are a Costco member, the one in Plano has THE most delicious freshly made gelato. I wish the one in my town had that.
