“A militia group marches up 7th St. in downtown Louisville. They wouldn’t identify their group, but I know I’ve seen some here before. #BreonnaTaylor #Louisville @wdrbnews”
I have mixed feelings about protests. I’m not against them I just have mixed feelings.
But what I am not ambivalent about is the belief that under no circumstances should armed ”militia” type groups be allowed on our streets if they refuse to identify themselves. To all that ask.

We've always been a country that allows white men with weapons to do whatever they like and get away with it - so long as the people they victimize are poor and/or POC. This is not new.

I don't think we are a country that allows this. But I'm not surprised that this is the result when democratic leaders won't do their job and protect their citizens.

Citizens like Breonna Taylor and George Floyd?

It's acceptable because Republicans won't allow sensible gun laws. I think it is absolutely ridiculous that this is ok, but I guess people like pixiechick are ok with it. Has nothing to do with Democratic leaders not "protecting their people."

How is the fault of Democratic leaders that Breonna Taylor was shot and killed while sleeping in her own bed, and that the officer who shot her is walking around free, charged with a relatively minor thing, and people might be rightfully angry about yet another miscarriage of justice against the black community? Tell your militia boys to sit the fuck down. Nobody asked them to walk through town swinging their prosthetic penises to make sure the black people keep quiet and know their place.

We've always been a country that allows white men with weapons to do whatever they like and get away with it - so long as the people they victimize are poor and/or POC. This is not new. Actually it’s a lack of leadership. This country has a history of civil unrest for various issues in my timeline its been since the the 60’s and long before that. How it’s handled is reflective of the leadership on all levels of government. trump’s handling is sending in these mysterious armed groups with or without the consent of local government. Which instead defusing the situation, that would normally be the goal of a true leader, he is deliberately throwing gas on it to make some point that has very little to do with the issues at hand. And which he cares very little about. We allowed this to happen because we allowed the most unqualified person, in every way, to become president.

Well ‘we’ allowed an armed group to storm into a state house and threaten to hang elected officials and not a single thing was done to them. Not arrested. Not fined.
So long as your white and right wing it’s ok to run around like terrorists

Has nothing to do with Democratic leaders not "protecting their people." Recognizing how it could come to be doesn't mean I'm okay with it. And yes the violence going on for months DOES have everything to do Democratic leaders not putting a stop to it. When you have politicians on the left and news media encouraging it, it's on them.

How much are people supposed to take? Peaceful and legal means have not resulted in justice. Perhaps those who don't want violence should join us in voting for people who DO want to bring justice. You know what they say: no justice, no peace. Keep voting for the racist right and keep getting riots - particularly when, in many cases, the police charged with keeping the peace actually incited the violence.

That is likely to get a response from their base as well as those who are opposed to it.

It's amazing to me that the folks who claim to be all about our founding and this country's supposed exceptionalism completely ignore the fact that the US was founded in open, violent revolt against tyranny because legal and peaceful attempts to obtain justice failed.
It's amazing how they claim to be in favor of the rule of law, but are happy to throw out fundamental concepts like due process when it involves a group they don't like. It's amazing how little they care for the rule of law when those rules are being ignored in cases involving people whose lives they consider less worthy of protection than their own.

I of course live in the underbelly of MN republican land, and there are a lot of people posting on fb about how they are voting for the person who doesn't allow burning and violence..I'm like??? blink? so it's all the democrats doing that?

As much as he likes to tell supporters that this is what to expect if Biden is elected, it is currently happening on his watch. His support of militia groups only emboldens them. He tweets liberate Michigan, he came out in support of the pro Trump caravan in Portland OR and supported Kyle Rittenhouse, the 18 year old from another state who showed up in Kenosha with an AR 15. Trump showed up in Kenosha and instead of talking to the family of Jacob Blake, he stood in front of a burned building. The chaos and violence help him in the polls, so he encourages it and fans the flames. And Fox News encourages the militia as well. Tucker Carlson defended Kyle saying that he “had to maintain order”. Since when do we need untrained 18 year old with assault rifles? His attempt to “maintain order” killed 2 innocent people and injured another. Would you like Democratic mayors to follow Trump’s lead and send in law enforcement without any riot training in camouflage uniforms without identification to pull people off the streets into unmarked cars? By most accounts, Trumps actions only worsened the situation in Portland. Common sense gun laws, starting with banning assault weapons would be a start towards ending some of this violence.

I've been watching this unfold today as the verdict was announced. While the verdict outright SHOCKED me, the rest didn't. I feel so saddened that we can't figure out how to protest in a safe way and not end up being more fodder for the orange asshole in office. This all plays right into his grubby hands and into the cheers of his base. OF COURSE he'd think that the National Guard should be sent in. OF COURSE the unrest would be filmed. It was as though they were just waiting for it, then filmed it, and then it'll be another talking point against the BLM people.
Are we in a sick, twisted Mark Burnett show for the past 4 years? If so, I wish it would be cancelled so that we could move on!!!!!!!

I'm in MN where a lot of the original violence/burning happened. I love our governor. I support him. BUT I think he did NOT do a good job at handling what happened. 3 nights of violence should not have happened. One should not. A police dept should not have burned down.

I'll just take a moment to point out that here in the city that was George Floyd's home, there were several nights of protest with little/no violence or destruction of property. Not because people here aren't angry, but because our Democratic mayor, police chief and county executive made a point of validating that anger and expressing shared sorrow. The police chief walked with the protestors instead of turning his officers on them with tear gas and rubber bullets.
In cities where the police made the choice to use violent means to "quell" protests, violence escalated, protests lasted longer, and more property was destroyed.
So I disagree that violence happened because mayors didn't do enough to stop protests. Often it was that they and/or the police (local or federal mercenary troops) did too much to try to stop them.
We don't have a history of turning military weapons on our own citizens in the US a la Tiananmen square, but that sort of crushing power seems to be what Trumplicans would have preferred, rather than acknowledging the righteous fury of the people protesting.
(Oh, and when the "law and order" folks then turn around and want to boycott sports because players take a knee during the anthem, they show just how full of shit they are. It's not violent protest they're opposed to. It's ANY protest. Any indication that black people in this country don't want to just sit down and know their "place.")

And yes the violence going on for months DOES have everything to do Democratic leaders not putting a stop to it. When you have politicians on the left and news media encouraging it, it's on them. The president has encouraged unrest. Sending in his private police sure doesn't help. Gassing peaceful protesters so he can do a photo op with a Bible, which I am sure he has never read nor any other! The violence has nothing to do with Democratic mayors and everything to do with the current occupant of the White House. As much as he likes to tell supporters that this is what to expect if Biden is elected, it is currently happening on his watch. His support of militia groups only emboldens them. I do think it was Walz's fault about the huge violence and damage. I think a lot of it could have been decreased. Again, I'm a democrat. I like walz. I think more could have been done. We don't know what could have happened, the what if. I don't think the protests would have cont'd to cont and cont it they had been more restrained. I'm not talking violence against the protestors. I'm talking just something else that could have been done. Though I suppose the Trumpsters would have preferred they were fired on...so..

And the gun toting right wing is so dumb that they believe they will be allowed to keep their guns if trump get the totalitarian dictatorship that he wants installed. Guns are the first thing dictators round up. Until they do, where are the Black Panthers when we need them? I'm old enough to remember when they armed themselves. It was legal and glorious.

How did Trump encourage violence? Specifics This is when. When people are either too fucking dumb to see how Trump is encouraging violence or when they have their head buried in the sand that they need to ask on this forum for specifics is when we were fucked. We were also fucked when we elected a black president thinking race doesn’t matter. Little did we know that race does matter in this country and all the closet racist motherfuckers came out voting for a douche bag because he was white.
