My niece just gave birth and I want to send a gift. Normally this is not an issue because there is usually a shower and a baby registry. In this case my niece is the same age as my daughters but I rarely see her as she moved to the west coast 10 years ago.
The young couple is extremely environmentally and socially conscious, I think they would be considered "hipsters". I don't want to offend them with anything they might not want. My niece's mother said they don't have a registry, they haven't asked for anything and they have a tiny house and live "pretty minimally".
Is cash the best idea here - or is there some awesome gift that they might just love? Thoughts and ideas please!

My first thought was are they doing cloth diapers? If so, how about some cute covers from Etsy? You can have them shipped directly to them and look for a shop that is using organic materials.

You are so sweet to think of them. I'd find out where they shop for food or eat out and send gift cards.

Or perhaps a membership for a nearby zoo or kids museum?

My go to is a handmade quilt. It doesn't have to be big and I make sure the recipients know that it is washable and machine dry-able. If you don't sew maybe you crochet or knit? or have a friend you can pay to do so? If not, a purchased one would be good as well. You could use bamboo fiber or other environmental friendly fibers.

How about a GC to Shutterfly? Even minimalists love baby pictures!

Problem with cloth diapers is there are multiple systems, all with different styles.
I'd go with something made from bamboo. Or go totally different and buy them something from a charity, like a tree planted in the Amazon, a pound of plastic removed from the sea, something like that.

Food grinder/mill so they can make their own baby food when it's time for solids. Organic cotton bibs, burp cloths, diapers.

I think you’ve received great suggestions here!
Baby and minimalists don’t seem to go in the same sentence. JK.

If they live minimally, I’d suggest something that has multiple uses or grows with the baby. That said, I don’t know what they already have. My other suggestion would be to pick a toy from Green Toys. They’re made from 100% recycled plastic and are very high quality. You can get them at Target or Nordstrom...I’m sure some other places too. www.greentoys.com/collections/babyI also like the membership suggestions.

A donation in the child's name to one of the environment causes.

If you can find out if she plans to breastfeed I would get her a Haakaa manual breast pump, it helps collect breast milk on one breast while you feed from the other.

I would send things like a thermometer, baby Tylenol, teething drops, etc. These are things that a lot of times new parents don't think about.

Find out if they are doing cloth diapers. If they are, get whatever brand they are using in a variety of sizes and patterns.
Other than that, I would do my standard go to gift of a bunch of books.

I think I would ask this particular couple what they could use, and yes, cash is never wrong, in my opinion. if their house is truly a tiny house... they won't have room for anything extra.
Meals for the new parents and board books for baby are among my favorite things to gift new parents.

I have two go-to gifts that have always been well received.
Crochet (or knit) 100% cotton washcloths. I generally make a stack of 10 in natural color.
And I start their library. I tend to skip board books. We go with books that we’re my kids favorites or my favorites as a child. Stone soup, dorothy’s Dream, the monster at the end of this book, Danny and the dinosaur, etc

For a couple like that I would use caution with making anything handmade. When my BFF’s DD was having her baby I wanted to make a stack of nice big cotton flannel receiving blankets like her grandma made for my DD when she was born. It was my most favorite gift and ten years later my DD still uses them for various things. BUT—I ended up NOT doing that because her DD was dead set against anything that was not strictly “certified organic” for her kid and there was no way to guarantee that the fabrics would be that even if they were 100% cotton. I was told, “the dyes could be harmful to the baby’s skin.” Ugggh. Whateverrrr. To each their own. I ended up buying her a couple Burt’s Bees certified organic sleepers and a hat and called it good. I wasn’t about to spend a bunch of money on fabric and an afternoon of my time sewing blankets that she would just end up donating because she wouldn’t use them for her kid.

Valid point! i was thinking a nice blanket but now I’m thinking cash or gift card to their local small business coffee shop or grocery store. Trader Joe’s are pretty popular in CA as are Sprouts and Nugget.
