My dd hates jackets and coats. She's in college now so she doesn't have much occasion to dress up (I guess who does these days). But she needs a new winter coat. What style is IN now? What length? Where should I look?
Thanks in advance.

Where will she be wearing said winter coat? Because winter in Minneapolis is way different from winter in San Diego.

Both of my dds (Michigan) have longer jackets. Older dds is a The North Face and younger dd will get a new Patagonia three-in-one that is knee’ish length as she will be (hopefully soon) experiencing Chicago winters.
College changed older DD’s opinions on coats as she was spending a lot more time walking in the cold. It isn’t run from the house to the car and the car to a warm building.

I never wore a real winter coat in my late teens to early 20's until I started working on a large college campus. The college I attended was very small and had hamster trail type walkways to get around campus. But when I got my job on the main campus, I had to quickly go buy a winter coat. Especially as it was January and part of my job involved walking around campus (more than the job description implied).

In high school she only wore a North Face fleece. Now that she's in college, she wears a puffer coat that covers her rear end (like the ones in the Patagonia link, though we tend to buy ours on the cheap-- I've had good luck at Costco).

I just bought my daughter a Patagonia coat last week. She’ll (hopefully) be on campus in January (in Ohio).
Bonus - I love the company! Made in the USA, earth and animal friendly, and ecologically responsible. I have bought three coats off the Worn Wear section of their website just this year. I got excellent condition coats for far less than regular price as resell items from people trading in their preowned costs for credit toward new coats. You’d never know they weren’t new.

I think if your DD gets cold enough she will go out and find her own winter coat. At the very least she can ask you to tag along.

My daughter prefers Patagonia/North Face fleece that are short (goes well with jeans and leggings). They are heavier/warmer than sweatshirts (it doesn't get very cold at her college).

I love Patagonia. The trend for college students - based on what I see on my niece (sophomore in Boulder) and sons girlfriend (sophomore in Oregon) are anything cropped and puffy or shiny or fuzzy jackets . Obviously if you are in Minnesota or Wisconsin short jackets might not work... ETA- The trend among all the young people here is to wear high rise leggings with any type of cropped top. It’s taken me a while but I think I am finally getting used to this look!

My daughter took a North Face puffer jacket and vest. I bet she’ll end up just putting on a hoodie and walking fast a lot of the time, though. 😉

DD is a senior in Minnesota. Her freshman year, we visited her at the beginning of October for Parents Weekend. I tried to get her to look for a warm winter jacket and some boots, but she kept saying they weren’t her style. We lived in Virginia and it never got crazy cold there. Plus, she was mostly going from the house to her car to the school and back. Not two weeks later, she was on the phone asking for me to order her a winter jacket. She has this one in a pretty teal and an insulated navy pea coat. Both are from Lands’ End because they have tall sizes and she is tall with long arms. She wanted to be COVERED!

My recommendation will depend on how cold is it where she is going to school. For up to 20 degrees, this is what would be in style for sure: www.jcrew.com/p/womens_category/coats_and_jackets/topcoat/cocoon-coat-in-italian-stadiumcloth-wool/J5536I own two of them and have had them for 7+ years. The stadium cloth material is very warm. For anything below that, I wear a Patagonia down puffer: www.patagonia.com/product/womens-fiona-down-parka/28363.html?dwvar_28363_color=FRYT&cgid=womens-jackets-vests-parkasI have it in black. I also have other warm jackets, such as a short Uniqlo down puffer and a Barbour quilted coat with Thinsulate. But in college, I wore a school/Greek life hoodie with a thick fleece (Columbia, Patagonia, etc.) over it. And if I had a party, I wore a pea coat and just braved the cold (have you seen how many college girls wear short skirts in the winter lol). If she loses stuff easily, then I would opt for something less expensive that she can layer for warmth. A lot of people got their coats stolen at parties because their coat looked like someone else's or people took them because they were nicer than their coat.

We live in WA state (the East side where it snows) and last year I bought my DD an Eddie Bauer long puffer coat. It’s not super puffy and it goes to about mid thigh. The longer (mid calf) puffy coats at in but they are expensive. I think I paid $80 last winter for hers, Eddie Bauer had a 50%off sale so I had DD pick one. It’s thinner than those puffier ones but she said it is super warm. She goes to school in the middle of wheat fields and the wind can get brutal down there. She’s been very happy with it and I was happy with the price.

My friend's daughter went to college in a colder state. She was fine when her mom purchased NF and Patagonia lighter weight jackets for her. But the big packable Lands End parka - oh no! She thought her mom was crazy - when would she needs ANYTHING that warm? First real coldsnap and she called home to thank you!

He predicted she would be calling within the month. He’d already been there 2 years and knew she would need it! “That’s not my style” has become part of our family vernacular!

Did you ask her?
I just bought new coats for ds and dh and just had them send me a few links and offered money if they would prefer to thrift. (Dh cackled at the idea of him caring enough to dig through thrift shelves and do considered 😄 )

I'm in northern MN. The big trends with college kids, though my girls are a yr or 2 out, so girls in their 20s are definitely Patagonia, North Face, and under Armour. usually about a below waist length.

I just ordered a winter coat for my almost 18 year old daughter. She wanted a longer puffer type jacket. She is tiny and we ended up ordering one from Lands End in the girls section that was on sale. We live in Minnesota and she'll be attending college in the Fargo area next year. The coat we ordered says it will keep you warm to -20. She liked the silver, but decided to go with black because it would be easier to keep clean.
