So about a week and a half ago there was another big Penzey's offer. I grabbed the 2 heart and soul boxes allowed, a mini something or other and an jar of onion powder.
Today, of all days, my order arrived. In a much larger box than expected. My DH watched me unbox it and check off the list. I got what I ordered plus the little packet of free spice that you get. There were 2 other medium size boxes. Not listed on the order form. I opened one up and it was a coffee mug. "CHOOSE LOVE" on the front. I love them!!
So my question, did anyone else get freebies like this in their box? Penzey's just got my loyalty for life!

I don't have room at home for them so they will be removed. Either at my DS's house or the office.

Heh. Posted yesterday (here) how annoyed I was with the surprise mugs. Opinion seems to be split. And strong. Ironic, that, on this day. I have a friend named Hope - to whom I’ve pawned off gifted some of that infernal “Hope” merch they often include.

Oh wow-I'm really surprised that some did not like them! I was THRILLED to get them and they went right into my mug cupboard.

So, i am new here. I know we have a Penzy’s Here. They sell spices, right? What is the big deal about them? What am I missing? I really don't have the answer for you. But they do have an amazing choice of spices. My DD has a store where she lives. I love to go in and smell and try samples. I really couldn't tell you if they were better than the spices I get at Kroger, local gro store or Walmart. But they seem better. They have blends that are truly scrumptious. Mural of Flavor, Tuscan Sunset, Galena Street to just name a couple. I have picked up a couple of their curry mixes for ODS. He wants to make more curries at home. They usually have a great promo or sale every couple-three months. I know a lot of us here stock up on what we need then. They always have a freebie packet of spice in the order when you get it.

I'm confused as to why it's so terrible for some that they include inspirational mugs?

I'm confused as to why it's so terrible for some that they include inspirational mugs? For me it is unwanted clutter that I didn't ask for. Then it becomes something else to have to deal with (get rid of). As socially conscious as Penzey's is, I am a bit surprised they do this because it just creates more stuff to fill landfills eventually.

Walk into any thrift store and look at the disproportionate number of mugs in the hardgoods section, often promotional. They largely don’t sell, so they get destroyed. I didn’t ask for a mug, let alone two; I didn’t ask for a bigger, heavier package; I didn’t ask for more packing materials. In fact, I made a point to order all spices in bags, not jars. Work with me here, Penzey’s. This is not who you claim you are. (And while you’re at it, don’t try to argue that the freebies costs (production, shipping) are not ultimately passed on to the customer.) I’m also the person who for years would write a special request in Grubhub orders not to send plastic utensils and chopsticks and cr@p. Took them years to figure out to add that as a clickable option. I‘m fully aware that I’m like an old man yelling at kids to get off his lawn, but I think a lot more people are aware of waste now.

I appreciate the peas who enable/alert us to the Penzey's deals. I got a rather L box as well and received 2 mugs. They will be stocking stuffers. Also unexpected--a jar of French thyme.

This! Plus we don't use mugs regularly. No one drinks coffee and I drink tea maybe a few times a month. We have ones that match our wedding dishes (no idea why) and the 4 random ones, 2 that are special to me and 2 that I'm ok with the kids using for hot chocolate.

So, i am new here. I know we have a Penzy’s Here. They sell spices, right? What is the big deal about them? What am I missing? Penzeys has wonderful spices and mixes, and often things I can’t find elsewhere. They make powdered rosemary which you can’t get at my local supermarkets ... the kid and I don’t like those hard little dried rosemary sticks that’s usually all you can find, but we like the rosemary flavor. BUT be aware, the owner is a flaming progressive who likes to include liberal screeds in his advertising emails, interspersed with the freebies and recipes. So if that would bother you, it may not be the place for you.

So if that would bother you, it may not be the place for you. It is the main reason that my last order was from The Spice House. Same excellent quality without all the politics. (And my disclaimer - I would feel the same way if they were extremely conservative pushing their point of view.) Funny thing is that the owner of The Spice House is the brother sister of the owner of Penzey's. They most likely have similar political views, but are not in your face with it. To me, that makes all the difference. Also, I like the flat packs soooo much better than the plastic bags that Penzey's uses.

I thought The Spice House was owned by his sister? Either way, yes siblings. I don't get the emails. I think I must have opted out at some. I just need my spices.

Im still mad that last year I placed an order, forgot something and placed another and they cancelled BOTH of my orders and emailed me to tell me that I couldn't double dip and order twice just because they were giving out freebies but that I could reorder a different day if I actually wanted my items.
Fuck their spices and the crap they throw in the boxes.
