I received an awesome RAK from AussieMeg today! π₯° So many chocolates and assorted Aussie treats. She also sent musk candy in retaliation for the Thanksgiving candy corn I sent to her. ππ. We haven't tried them yet, I am scared!

I would be more concerned about the vegemite and cheese. That was really nice of her and you too.

Thatβs great. I love violet crumbles and those vegemite snacks look amazing! I was going to say the same. Marmite cheese biscuits that we used to get here were delicious. Are musk sticks like parma violets, I wonder? I love those too. Thank you for sharing your RAKs AussieMeg and my3freaks. I find it fascinating to see which snacks seem the same across the world - although I know that US chocolate might have the same packaging but is very different from what we get in the UK.

You are correct that the US Chocolate is very different from the UK. Canada sells the Cadbury brand and in a blind taste test a few years ago, our version of the Cadbury Easter Egg tasted better than the UK version. The recipes are the same, but use the ingredients from the country that makes them. Guess our cows made the chocolate (dairy milk) tastier. Canada also has the recipes for the old 'Rowntree' chocolates like Smarties, Aero, Coffee Crisp, Kit-Kat & After 8. We can get Flaky, Mr. Big, Caramilk, Wunderbar and other Cadbury treats. I think this is due to being part of the Commonwealth. (?). The American version of Kit Kat are made by Hershey and contain a fair bit of wax in the recipe. Now I am hungry for a Wunderbar or Caramilk chocolate bar.

Now I am hungry for a Wunderbar or Caramilk chocolate bar. I read that the US ingredients were the same but different proportions. In the UK we use more cocoa butter and cocoa solids and less sugar, so the melt-in-the-mouth factor happens at a lower temperature. I find US chocolate incredibly sweet, and I have a sweet tooth. We could only get American chocolate bars in Singapore (makes sense as Singapore is tropical so British chocolate would melt) and apart from being fabulously expensive, they were such a disappointment. I stopped buying them. A dear friend sent me some American chocolate mint bark once. Now that was delicious!

Hahaha yes, the Vegemite Shapes and the musk sticks were definitely my retaliation for the Turkey Dinner candy corn! I told my3freaks about a thread here a while ago when I mentioned musk flavoured lollies, and all the Americans were horrified at the thought. That was the first time I realised that musk lollies / candy wasn't a thing everywhere. We absolutely love it! And when I told my DSO last night about it, he was fake-outraged hahaha! So much so that I had to go to the supermarket and buy us a big pack of musk sticks. There were a couple of other things that I had bought to put in the box, but they didn't fit. One was lolly bananas (another of my favourites, I always buy bananas, musk sticks and mint leaves). I had to take them out to fit in the Twirls and Marvellous Creations that were a last minute addition. The other was Clinkers, which is my go-to road trip sweets. They only had the big family pack of Clinkers and it was way too big. Oh, and I told DSO your review of the Vegemite Shapes - you and your daughter " didn't hate it" and your son said that he would never eat them again. He wanted me to tell you that Australians feel exactly same with that particular variety Shapes.

Well of course the Canadian chocolate tasted better if it the people doing the blind taste test were Canadian! I've come to realise that in most cases, people prefer what they're used to and what they've grown up eating. I don't think there would be a Brit on the face of the earth who would think US or Canadian chocolate is better than UK chocolate. I recently worked with an English girl who was here on a work/travel visa. She kept telling us that UK chocolate was much nicer than Australian chocolate. Another of my colleagues, whose brother lives in the UK now, also said that UK chocolate is really good. So the British girl found some imported UK chocolate and brought it in for us. I had some and thought - meh, overrated, I prefer Australian Cadburys. But I realise that it's just because I've been eating it for 50+ years and it' what I'm used to.

There were a couple of other things that I had bought to put in the box, but they didn't fit. One was lolly bananas (another of my favourites, I always buy bananas, musk sticks and mint leaves) I am NOT missing those. I detest bananas, including anything that tastes or smells like them. Other people in my house would probably have liked them, but I'd have gagged at the just opening them. I definitely think that most other (Aussie, UK, Canadian) chocolate is better overall than ours, and I'm still a fan of ours. I went to visit a friend in Ottawa when my son was a toddler (he's 24 now), and that started my obsession with the Cadbury Flake bars. I love the ones with that honeycomb/sponge stuff in it too. (Don't know what that magical stuff is actually called).

We have two different kinds of honeycomb bars - Violet Crumble (that I sent you) and Crunchie. I prefer Violet Crumble, although I did buy a couple of Crunchie bars last night to use on the top of a cake I'm going to make. The honeycomb in a Crunchie is a darker colour than the Violet Crumble, and it's a bit...... holier? less dense? more spongey? than the Violet Crumble. They're both delicious.

AussieMeg The blind taste test was tasted by all the other chocolatiers from all of the countries represented at the conference. So even the UK team had decided in the blind taste test said that the Canadian recipe was the best THAT YEAR. This is a way of ensuring that the quality is the same in all of the countries. Sorry if I didn't explain it properly. I love the ones with that honeycomb/sponge stuff in it too. (Don't know what that magical stuff is actually called). This is called sponge toffee. Magical wonderful candy.
