My nearly 16-year-old granddaughter has been home sick for three weeks and I'm wondering if the wonderful all-knowing Peas have any ideas at all I can pass on to her mother. She has a lot of dizziness, nausea, throwing up .... at times she feels hot (no fever) and says she hurts on the inside. Her first doctor visit was to an ENT doctor and he put her on some anti-nausea meds and some meds for possible acid reflux. No relief so my daughter took her to her family doctor who changed the anti-nausea meds (which did not help at all) and ordered blood tests, which included a test for mono, and also an ultrasound of her stomach and intestines. All came back normal so suggested she see a pediatric GI doctor (she has an appt with her this coming Wed). Two days ago, she was so sick my daughter took her to the ER .... initial thought by ER doctor was mono so they retested for mono as well as blood test to see if there was any abnormality of some of her organs and they also did a stomach X-ray. All came back normal. (He did give her another different anti-nausea med which does not seem to be helping either). She seems to be unusually tired and sleeps a lot. She has been keeping up with her homework but is very sad about not being able to go to school. She has tried 3 - 4 times during this time but ends up throwing up and her mom goes to get her. If this sounds familiar to anyone, or if you have any ideas or suggestions, I would really appreciate it if you would share (especially before she sees GI doctor on Wed. so that it can be brought up) as it seems to be a mystery as to what is going on. The ER doctor did say the first thing the GI doctor would probably do was a scope, which seems logical. Thank you so much for anything you would be able to share.

Is there any possibility she could be pregnant? I hate saying that but just reading the symptoms, that was my first thought.

Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue? My daughter had her diagnosis of Fibro at 16, plus she ended up with Mono after two negative tests. Otherwise is everything ok at school?

Wow, I really feel bad for her. That has to be really miserable. I think doing an endoscopy sounds like something that should do. I hope she finds some answers and relief soon.

leeny, I will let my daughter know about your suggestion of fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue. Thank you. Yes, the thought of everything alright at school has been explored and all seems to be fine (though you can never be positive so they are keeping that in mind).

Vertigo? Celiac or other food intolerance issues?
Poor kid, that sounds just miserable. I'll be watching for an update.

Here are my guesses, with no real basis other than pain and puking:
gall bladder or pancreatits endometriosis ovarian cysts
It's possible that the puking/nausea aren't themselves a symptom the way they might be with, say, a stomach bug but are instead how she's reacting to intense pain. Apparently, rupturing cysts are SUPER DUPER painful.

Epstein-Barr is the first thing that comes to mind. But the symptom that jumps out at me is "she hurts on the inside". That's telling, in my opinion. If she has good health insurance, I think I'd take her to an internal medicine specialist. It's likely going to be an exercise in ruling things out to find out what's wrong. Three weeks is a long time to be sick without a diagnosis. It may take awhile to figure it out but don't give up!
I'll be thinking of her. I had mono when I was her age and missed several weeks of school. It was hard.

Her symptoms sound like what my 15 yr old niece started out with 17 years ago. Thankfully for her there were already two confirmed cases in the family so they did have a place to start...appendiceal colic. All tests came back normal/fine. Docs wouldn't listen telling SIL that it was in niece's head. Niece was homebound from school for 3/4 months before anybody took them seriously. SIL finally found a surgeon who agreed to remove the appendix. Niece is 32 now with absolutely no reoccurring symptoms after surgery and her appendix was perfectly fine. SIL told me that because all the tests came back normal/fine it was an uphill battle to get the surgery because the there was no data/test to determine it was the appendix causing the pain EVEN with family history. In niece's case, her doctor had to go before the hospital board to get approval to operate. It was considered elective surgery too.
Hope you find the answers soon and your granddaughter gets relief from her pain. Keep us updated.

After reading zeutdog86 post, I wonder... my brother just had an appendectomy last week. He just felt yuck all week and felt himself getting worse and there was something that made him think he should go to the hospital. He didn't present typicallly for appendicitis, so he sat in the waiting room at the ER for 4 hours. My sil said the doctor was with him for 30 seconds and got him rushed into surgery. His appendix was gangrened. He is fine now.

I suffered from recurrent ovarian cysts and endometriosis from 15 until 29 when I finally had a complete hysterectomy and had my remaining ovary removed. The pain was horrible, but I had always had severe cramps with my periods, so I thought everyone had that kind of pain.
Birth control pills really helped keep the cysts and endometriosis at bay. As an adult, I finally got a doctor to believe me about how much pain I was having, and he wrote me Vicodin for my periods and whenever I had cysts. By that time, my ovaries were dying. I went into premature ovarian failure in my late 20s and hadn't had a period in over a year by the time I had my hysterectomy for precancerous cells.
I also have issues with my GI system. I've also had my gallbladder out and now have chronic pancreatitis. The pain for those is way up into the ribs and upper abdomen and felt like constant burning pain. The pain for the cysts and endometriosis were much lower and sharper.
I hope your granddaughter finds relief soon.

Wow! When I read this I thought you might have put the wrong age. I have a girl in my class who is 11 with the exact same problems who has been out for three weeks and back in class 3 times for a half day to a day. Currently she is back in the hospital. This is so sad and stressful to her family. Hope they find out what is wrong quickly.

This is a long shot. The symptoms seem the same as symptoms my friend gets when she doesn't get treatment for Acute Intermittent Porphyria (AIP). There are alot more symptoms and more variations of Porphyria. It seems your Granddaughter does not fit the criteria for the main forms of Porphyria. If it's fibro, she can get all the rest she needs. Graduating from HS will be difficult but can be done once she learns how to control fibro. Is your Granddaughter a very busy person who excels at what she does in life? I have fibro. Contact me via PM if you have questions.

Gallbladder issues can present this way for sure. Has she had an ultrasound of that area? Also the gallbladder can be diseased without stones, though it is rare.
Appendicitis doesn't always present in a typical way. The surgeon was hesitant to take out mine, but the symptoms went away immediately, so clearly this was it.
Ovarian cysts. Pancreatitis. Hepatitis. I'd think the latter two should have shown up in bloodwork, though.
What about atypical migraines? Migraines without headache.
Is the dizziness causing the nausea/vomiting? If so, the cause of the dizziness could be inner ear problems, chronic sinus infection. . . I'm sure there are others.

My first thought was Celiac Disease. That was my daughter to a t almost 2 years ago. GI decided to do a scope and saw irritation, so they did biopsies. Came back questionable, so celiac genetic screen was ordered. That came back positive for celiac.
It took 8 months for my daughter GI system to heal.
I would suggest full allergy pannel as well as celiac genetic screen.

I had given my daughter the link for all your responses and also made a list of all the possibilities each of you gave which she took with her when she saw the pediatric GI. She has had couple of procedures since and I am starting a new thread hoping you have more suggestions.
