I have wanted a typewriter for years to use in various memory keeping projects. I just want a standard type font. Any tips on brands to look for or avoid? The We R Memory Keeper one looks cute but it is expensive and the reviews aren't very good.

My DH went to a second hand / antique shop and got me an old office typewriter. It works great and was only $75. It is built solidly and uses a standard typewriter ribbon.
Could you check somewhere like that?

I picked up a vintage manual Smith-Corona at a thrift store a few years back for my daughter - it's a portable in a case and I found the ribbons on amazon - I think it was $20.

I asked Santa Hubby for the We R Memory Keepers typewriter for Christmas, and I received it a few weeks ago. It's cute, but you can believe the reviews. The keys are very difficult to push (and I learned to type on a manual typewriter many years ago) and it doesn't type consistently. I kind of regret my choice.

My friend got one and took it to a typewriter repair place to see if they could make it work better and the repair person said it was so cheaply made he was surprised it worked. I'd check Facebook Marketplace for one, I see them every once in awhile in my area (SF Bay Area) or even Craigslist. I bought mine off Etsy years ago and got it repaired but my toddler got at it and jacked it up, so I need to take it in for repair again. I've been using typewriter fonts and my printer to get the typewriter effect.

I've been using typewriter fonts and my printer to get the typewriter effect. Duh, good idea! Don't know why that did not occur to me.

I wanted one of the WRMK typewriters so so much but they were hard to get and so expensive in Australia so I had to give it a miss, after the reviews though I was not so upset.
I got mine off e-bay from a local pickup for $40, I recently bought new ribbon for it and it works great. I used to do all of my journaling in the font traveling typewriter off the computer but I love being able to journal straight onto project life cards which I have been using more of lately so have been using the typewriter a lot.

I got one from eBay (a Smith Corona) for $40. I got another from a thrift store for $32. Both are in great working condition. One is from 1960s and one from 1950s. I would like a 3rd, and there are many great ones to be had here: Shop GoodwillI only searched on "Smith Corona typewriter" and got 83 hits. One is $19.99 right now and the bidding ends in 12 hours I believe. Really a great place to look for typewriters.

Check out the free typewriter fonts created using an actual typewriter (as sleepingbooty linked & shared her layouts featuring Olympia Script in the KP & October Daily threads).

I got my portable electric typewriter at an estate sale, for only $20. It works perfectly (I got it cleaned/serviced at a local typewriter store). Check out local estate sales or garage sales in your area. I have taken it with me to crop weekends-- it's pretty funny to see people's ears perk up and wonder what the noise is, when I start typing, lol!!

This thread finally made me reach out and tell my dad if he comes across his typewriter from college that I want it. I know it's in my parents' house "somewhere".

Being inspired by this thread, I got out my manual typewriter and semi-fixed it. It now works about as well as the WeR Memory Keepers typewriter. It can probably be tuned up at a typewriter repair place but I don't feel like getting it tuned up. That being said, I'm going to sell it since I haven't used it in over 4 years and use a typewriter font on my computer for journaling. If anyone wants it, if you pay shipping (it fits in a large priority mail box so $21.10) it's yours.

I bought both my vintage typewriters from this shop on Etsy www.etsy.com/ca/shop/TypewriterLoft?ref=simple-shop-header-name&listing_id=642584824Not affiliated, just really happy with both if them. Sam ensures they are ready to use (replacing the rollers etc) and packages them very well (I’m in Canada, so that was a big issue for me). If you’re looking for anything in particular, drop him a line... I think he has a large collection available, they just aren’t all listed 🤓
