Been thinking about asking for a glass mat for the holidays.
What are pea opinions?
Right now I craft on 2 CM self-healing mats side by side - joined under a little plastic clamp that tries to keep them together. But they slide apart all the time and they're just not quite big enough.
Do peas use other things? a glass mat? THE glass mat (TH). Has anyone tried just a glass mat from the dollar store or amazon meant more for cooking? Any other ideas?
Your opinions and experiences appreciated.

I dont have a glass mat, but I do have a glass top on top of my desk. I love mine - it cleans easily and just wipe it down. I also have a self healing mat on one section of my desk (on top of the glass) - I like it as well. I mainly use it for the ruler on it.

I have a glass mat for when I need a glass mat. ( messy stuff ) It’s the WRMK one I got it in clearance. However for daily crafting I use a dollar store plastic mat from dollar tree. They come 2 in a package and I get the transparent ones.

It’s the WRMK one I got it in clearance. I get so irritated w/myself cuz I had a 12x12 glass mat that went w/my little Making Memories Slice tool way back when. I should have kept the mat, but I sold it w/the cutter

I really like mine. It cleans up with water easily & is quite sturdy. I use the grid measurements a lot.

I have 3 mats in a stack on my desk, and I put the one on top that I need at the time: a magnetic self healing mat for general use; a foam mat for stamping, and a glass mat (I didn't get the Slice when it was all the rage, but got the glass mat) that I use for cutting. It makes it easier to move the paper and the knife and I get a nice clean cut.
I also sometimes use the glass mat for wet work. It wipes up nicely. But mostly I use the backing/cover from an old Silhouette cutting mat, a sheet of heavy office transparency, or I use a sheet of wax paper.

I use a self-healing mat everyday & add a glass mat to my work surface on the rare occasion when using mixed media (e.g. stamping, stencils). Note I recently saw the WRMK Mixed Media Glass Mat (link to SB.com) at Tuesday Morning for $19.99. HTH.

I thought about the travel size, so thanks for that. I think I'd really like something larger than what I have - maybe something 24 or 28" wide and then I can see putting the glass mat on top when needed. I love the idea of using the silhouette mat cover too for blending - great thought! You're all giving me some great ideas.

Glass mat is life changing- easy to clean up But you can get cheaper ones than TH as long as you make sure to get one with a smooth surface Some of the cooking ones have a textured surface. Only the TH one is black though

Love the Tim glass mat for messy work, making cards, etc. I have a large self-healing mat (Hobby Lobby coupon purchase from sewing section) on my craft desk/table for scrapbooking. Love them both!

I picked up a smooth surface glass mat for kitchen use at a thrift shop for just a few dollars. I won't say it's life-changing, but it's sure handy.

I've got 2--the WRMK cutting mat that is I think about 14" square, and then I recently picked up the WRMK mixed media one linked above. I LOVE IT. Liked the square one, LOVE the bigger one.
I had always liked the idea of the TH one, but do not like working on a dark surface. So I waited. Then saw the square one, and decided to try it to see if I liked glass. I did, LOL. But it was not quite big enough.
When I saw the Mixed Media one at Tuesday Morning for 19.99, I snatched that bad boy right up. It is PERFECT for me. It is larger than even the big TH one, light color, has gridded and non gridded areas. And I ordered the TH non stick panel to put on there.
I mix inks and do smooshing techniques and watercoloring and blending. (GLASS IS A GAME CHANGER IF YOU INK BLEND.) Squirt gesso, collage medium and paint on there as a pallete-comes right off. Hot glue on it. Heat emboss on it. Use sticky grid to hold paper for stencilling. Comes right up. Love laying things out on the grid. My whole desktop would be a mixed media glass mat if there was one big enough, LOL.

I just got the WRMK one from TM too. I've had 2 CM mats that I duct taped together and a large WRMK mat. What I didn't like about both is that ink would stain them especially if I didn't wipe it up quickly. I only occasionally do stamping and it still bothered me. I also the struggled with a place to use my fuse and heat embossing. Neither of which I do often, but do even less since I wasn't able to use it on my regular work surface.
I just wish the glass mat was larger than 24 in wide, other than that it is great and for $20 not too expensive.

Do you want the glass mat to work on top of, cut or for blending/inks?
I don't think I could work on a glass mat all the time, I have a large self healing mat.
I have a 12x12 glass mat (it may be WRMK?) I purchased years ago at Joann's when I had some new circle cutter that they recommended using glass. I could never get the circle cutter to work great and the glass sat to the side for the most part. Then this year when I started trying alcohol inks, I got it out and it is nice for working on and cleaning up.
I think Joann's still sells one of the 12x12 types.

I have the original and the travel sized TH glass mats. I really like them. But if I could change one thing, I would make the background light grey instead of black.

I’ve never thought about using a glass mat, but this thread is convincing me I might need to try it.

I would make the background light grey instead of black. Can I ask why you would prefer grey? To all the peas so far - you have given me a LOT of great ideas. I think I will go for a larger self-healing mat (18x24?) and then a smaller glass mat on top when necessary - like the TH travel size or maybe the WRMK mixed media mat. THANK YOU!!!!

I've been a hold out on the TH glass mat. I bought it. I'm now kicking myself why didn't I buy that sooner.
It's a good Xmas present idea.
I have the left handed one. I'm debating getting the travel one too , for when I go to my friends.

I use a 24x36 self-healing mat on my desktop. I have a 12x12 glass mat from EK Success that I have had FOREVER that I pull out when I need it. I like this combination best.
I also have the TH glass mat. I have always been impressed with the design and quality of Tim's products *except* for the glass mat thing. I just don't love it. It's too small for me. And the little sticky feet fall off constantly and by now I've misplaced two of them so it's wonky and wobbly. I could have gone without purchasing and my life would have still been complete. lol

FYI Joann is listing the WRMK Media Mat as a glass cutting mat. Same one that has been at Tues Morning. It is on sale for 24.99.

I switched from an extra large cutting mat as my crafting surface to the Tim holtz glass mat about a year ago. OMG what a difference. I love the glass mat.

I would make the background light grey instead of black. Can I ask why you would prefer grey? The only reason is if you're ink smooshing or or have paints or something on the darker surface it's hard to see. But definitely not a deal breaker, though.

azcrafty, I could kiss you (virtually, of course!) I ordered the self-healing and the glass mat from WRMK and they both together cost less than the glass mats I was finding on Amazon. THANK YOU! THE PEAS ARE AMAZING!
