I was procrastinating this morning while getting ready for work, and for some reason I started gathering all of my various black ink pads. I found everything from Colorbox chalk ink in Charcoal to Catherine Pooler Midnight to VersaFine Onyx Black to Memento Tuxedo Black and more. I thought I'd make a swatch sheet of my black inks. What's your favorite and why? I was using VersaFine Clair in Nocturne to stamp my return address on Christmas cards, but I noticed that the ink was feathering in some spots. Not sure if that's the stamp or the ink.

Hands down Versafine Black Onyx. I love its saturation plus the fact that it's lasted so long! I've never had to buy a new one and it's as juicy as the day I got it. 👌

Thanks for the input! I have all the ones mentioned with the exception of Scrapbook.com's hybrid ink and Pinkfresh's detail black ink. I think I'll have to check those out!

I'll add another vote for VersaFine Onyx Black. I bought it after several peas recommended it and have been really happy with it.

I was using VersaFine Clair in Nocturne to stamp my return address on Christmas cards, but I noticed that the ink was feathering in some spots. Not sure if that's the stamp or the ink. I would bet it was the envelope paper, not the stamp or the ink. (I had one set of envelopes where everything smudge, but I came to realuze it was because the envelopes were a tad glossy.) I really like the Clair ink when I want a crisp sentiment. Otherwise, it's tuxedo black for copic coloring.

The envelopes I was using were smooth without a lot of "tooth" to them. I should try the Clair ink on a different envelope!

Another vote for Versafine Onyx... and I also love Stazon black. It's so coal-y.

Like many others, my favorite everyday ink (which I use only for basic stamping on layouts) is Versafine in Onyx Black. ...I really like the Clair ink when I want a crisp sentiment... If you also have Versafine in Onyx Black, how does it compare to Versafine Clair in Nocturne in crispness, color shade/depth, etc.? TFS.

The only ink pads I have are from Close To My Heart. I don't use them super often, but have had no reason to look for another brand.

Versafine onyx black 100% for crisp images. Memento black for coloring with alcohol inks.

Not sure if that's the stamp or the ink. Your feathering problem could have simply been your application. I used to just smack my address label down as I was doing a lot at one time. I have learned to ink up and apply a lighter touch with the stamp for a clearer image. My favorite black ink is no different than my favorite any color ink. It depends on the look I want, the stamp, and the surface.
