We used to do much like the op.
Now that they kids are grown Christmas eve about an hour before Fred Meyers closes, we go to the store. We spread out & look for fun cheap gifts for each other. Tattoos, silly puddy, small puzzles, yoyos, dart guns, things in the $1 isle & some candies.
Once home we fill each others stockings. Christmas morning we spend a lot of time laughing & playing.
We didn't get to do it last year as I had just had surgery and this year covid. We all missed it!

First off, Ghirardelli and Lindt are the "good" chocolates in our house, and a special addition to stockings.
Second, stocking stuffers just need to fit in the stocking. Usually not expensive (due to the volume needed to fill all the stockings), but sometimes are $$.
Some of our stuffers:
Candy/chocolate
Lip balm
Shower poofs
Rubber ducks
Dice
Gift cards (to adult)
Fidget cube
Hot Wheels cards
Rolled up shirt
Book/magazine
Post It notes
Mini notebooks
Hair accessories
Mini tin of butter cookies
Pringles can
Really, anything that I think the kids will like. Bonus points for being consumable (bath poofs & rubber ducks are in this category)

In another post, someone commented that they got Ghiradhelli (I know that is not spelled correctly) squares in their stocking and they weren’t stocking worthy. That was me! Great thread topic but a little surprised to see my comment motivating a thread. I didn't mean to say they aren't generally stocking worthy. They are not stocking worthy in MY stocking, because for me, a stocking has favorite candies and those are not even close to a favorite for me. But they are definitely stocking worthy when someone likes them a whole lot or at least a whole lot more than I do! But when it comes to me filling stockings for others, I always include Clear Toy, a lollipop type candy that my grandpa, mom and I grew up with, and every year I include it even though no one else seems to care it is a must have stocking item in our family tradition. They till call it lollipop and I say Clear Toy. Every year. Well I put it in everyone's stocking including DGD and so I am passing it on against all odds. Anything in my opinion is stocking worthy if it fits in the stocking, despite cost if the person will want it. An Apple Watch could be stocking worthy if it fits. Makes sense if they aren’t your favorite. Sorry I didn’t copy your post. That is a neat tradition with the clear toy!

Anything that will fit can go in the stockings. It just depends on what I find that people will like. There is always chocolate, sometimes other candy, lip balm (although we have a drawer with probably 50 of them in it so I stopped buying that), socks, underwear, gift cards, toothpaste in fun flavors (DD likes Tanner’s Tasty Paste in Chocolate Ice Cream flavor, it tastes like a Wendy’s Frosty), sometime small Lego packs, video games, Blu-ray movies, tree ornaments. This year DD was getting a new laptop so one of her stocking things was a new wireless mouse. We’re limited by weight here. My stocking holder bases are not weighted heavy enough plus our mantel has a weird edge. If the stockings are too heavy they will pull the holders right down. Thank you for mentioning Tanners Tasty Paste! I'd never heard of it before, but just put it in my cart. My younger kids hate mint and cinnamon toothpaste ("it's SPICY!!!")

It can range from silly to expensive. Though I've never put toothpaste, socks, deodorant, etc in them. I was just reading through all these responses and wondering if we were the only ones that don’t put toiletries in stockings! I put some toiletries, namely shower poofs & lip balm. My ex dh used to get shaving razors & cream, and bar soap, toothbrushes, & deodorant in his stocking and younger me thought that was so weird. Grown up me understands now how expensive it is to fill stockings for several kids and that his parents were just including some practical things.

myboysnme Sorry I didn't see your comment in context originally. Don't worry.... I don't think you're a chocolate-elitist. Also, really neat tradition with the clear toy in the stockings!

I do toiletries in DD and her bf’s stockings because they’re poor and there’s nothing worse than spending money on a toothbrush and toothpaste when you’re poor. They were so funny. They moved into their own place at the end of the summer. They’d been living in his parents vacation.(bigger than mine!) house for the last year and a half. They said they haven’t had to buy tp, laundry or dish soap, or paper towels yet. I was like yeah because between his mom and me we buy it all for them. Lol

Lol That’s why I shifted from all fun stuff to a few fun things and more practical, one might say boring, stuff in stockings. Nothing like being poor college students who get a gift card to target to only turn around and use it on boring stuff like toothpaste and razors and deodorant. I remember those years and look back now and appreciate all the underwear, deodorant, toothpaste and stuff that my mom gave me so I could spend gift money on me. lol

Ha ha, that’s exactly what my kid says too! What’s really bizarre is that she loves peppermint bark but won’t chew mint gum or use mint toothpaste. I found it online from Amazon after my kid had chocolate toothpaste for her professional cleaning at the dentist, and I asked the hygienist, “Why don’t they have that for regular people to buy?” I went on a Google binge and that was what I found. I wish they had a sensitivity formulation, I’d use it myself! It smells and tastes just like a chocolate Frosty. Tanner’s toothpaste also comes in a vanilla ice cream flavor but the flavor isn’t very strong.

We haven't done stockings in a few years; but when we did, we followed the USPS guidelines for priority mail: if it fits, it ships. If it fit in the stocking, it was stocking worthy. Usually, candy, lip balms, jewelry, money. Occasionally, airline tickets.

But if no one else cares about the clear toys, are they stocking worthy to them? Or is it just "that lollipop mom always puts in that no one ever eats"? Exactly. I am the one who puts in clear toy that is not stocking worthy to others, only to me. Because tradition. Now if it was a 5 generation tradition to put in Ghirardelli squares that would be different too. Tradition always overrules stocking worthiness. In fact if I could find popcorn balls those would be in the toe of the stocking.
