Anything goes...it’s often sized based. Favorite treats, fun small surprises, lottery tickets, a gift card, small toys, etc.
All our stocking presents are wrapped and come from a “group” of people/characters. Last year all of dh’s came from football players. This year it was rock stars. Part of the fun is guessing the “group”. Russ, Ben, Drew, Peyton, etc. Steven, Billy, John, Mike, Duff, etc. DH wrapped DD’s this year using Animal Crossing characters. Mine were from Disney characters.
I keep the number even for each person as we go around in a circle opening each one one by one.

Weird. Any chocolate or candy is "stocking worthy" in my opinion I fill the stockings with chocolate, candy, lots of toiletries, gift cards, socks, car air fresheners, nail files, bath poufs, earrings, kitchen gadgets ... This year I also gave my dd's that putty/gel that cleans computer keyboards and I gave my mum some cat toys for her kitten

Another "Anything goes" stocking stuffer. There is always candy, a toothbrush, and a chapstick. This year the stocking stuffer hit was the reusable straw with cleaning brush that came in a pod from Target Dollar Spot that StephDRebel alerted me to.

Stockings for the boys here always include Slim Jim’s, (Lindt this year, usually Ghirardelli squares), Life Savers Book, Edible Insects. This year they included gourmet Beef Jerky, yodeling pickles, flip books, Door Dash and Subway gift cards, and a desktop Waving Tube Guy. In dh’s stocking I put Lindt Santa and reindeer, yodeling pickle, gourmet beef jerky, and a Patron tequila sampler. I got DH the tube guy too for his work desk when he eventually goes back on site. He loves it!

Ds is on medical formula only so he doesn't get candy.
He gets hot wheel vehicles, crayons, markers, new coloring book, new book to read, Hallmark ornaments, ect.
Sometimes he has gotten sensory toy items, a wallet, beanie, mittens, crazy socks.
Dd (food allergies) gets make up, Hallmark ornament, fuzzy socks, horse riding gear, ect. This year she got a water slicker and mane/tail brush.
Really, it can be a wide variety. But a new Hallmark ornament is always a must.

I buy presents from the lists my kids give me so my only opportunity to surprise and delight them is in their stockings. I scour the earth for cute, fun, whimsical, personal items that they'll love. There are always basics: hand sanitizer (which I've given them for years and they finally came in handy this year - my kids all had drawers full from years past); invisibobbles, high end chocolate, fuzzy socks, Dunkin Donuts gift cards. And every year I over-buy, so I get them novelty reusable shopping bags and put the overflow in those, so they get the bags and the stuff in them. Here's a picture of my dog, but you can see the shopping bags hanging with their stockings in the background. I love those dunks bags -- where did you get them? Etsy - the seller had really cute things.

It can range from silly to expensive. Though I've never put toothpaste, socks, deodorant, etc in them. I was just reading through all these responses and wondering if we were the only ones that don’t put toiletries in stockings!

Stockings in our home evolved into foodstuffs I will not buy during the rest of the year. My uncle got Pepperidge Farm cookies, DS got Mother's Circus Animals, and DH got Utz Pub Mix. Since we did not go out shopping at the mall this year, I didn't get the Hickory Farms mints until today when we got groceries. Those would have been in my stocking.

Here's a picture of my dog, but you can see the shopping bags hanging with their stockings in the background. Hmm, the link came back to this thread for me? But it looks like others saw it? The chocolates that usually go in stockings are either European Christmas themed from somewhere like Whole Market or Canadian picked up from trips north (Smarties, Coffee Crisps, Aero bars, etc.). No trips north this year, but Whole Market came through with those, too. DH will often put a pair of earrings in my stocking which will be the most expensive item, but otherwise it is small bits and pieces. A gadget to avoid touching buttons while out in public during COVID times was a big winner this year.

Anything that will fit can go in the stockings. It just depends on what I find that people will like. There is always chocolate, sometimes other candy, lip balm (although we have a drawer with probably 50 of them in it so I stopped buying that), socks, underwear, gift cards, toothpaste in fun flavors (DD likes Tanner’s Tasty Paste in Chocolate Ice Cream flavor, it tastes like a Wendy’s Frosty), sometime small Lego packs, video games, Blu-ray movies, tree ornaments. This year DD was getting a new laptop so one of her stocking things was a new wireless mouse.
We’re limited by weight here. My stocking holder bases are not weighted heavy enough plus our mantel has a weird edge. If the stockings are too heavy they will pull the holders right down.

Another anything that fits can go in the stocking from cheap to expensive. I usually try to have monetarily even gifts for the kids. Under the tree I really like to have a one-to-one ratio of presents to open. Since we all open our stockings at once, I'm not as particular on the one-to-one ratio. This year: goop to clean keyboards, small screwdriver set for eye glass repair of small electronic device battery changing, phone charger and power cord, digital thermometers for cooking (DH bought one for each of us - sometimes it's about having something that he bought to open with him and not whether we really need an extra 3 thermometers in the house ),then rest of our stockings were more individually specific items.
Sometimes, the item doesn't fit in the stocking or we've bought too much for the stocking (especially now since DH has started buying presents too), so they just go beside the stocking.

My cat fills my stocking. This year, my cat is on a very tight budget. She got me $5.00 cash for In-N-Out. A jar of Smuckers caramel and Smuckers hot fudge ice cream toppings. Simple ordinary everyday things, that are temporarily considered a splurge and a treat. Grateful for the little things.

DH & I don't do stockings. When I was little before my mom stopped celebrating holidays, stocking stuffers were batteries, blank cassette tapes, lifesavers, and such.

In another post, someone commented that they got Ghiradhelli (I know that is not spelled correctly) squares in their stocking and they weren’t stocking worthy. That was me! Great thread topic but a little surprised to see my comment motivating a thread. I didn't mean to say they aren't generally stocking worthy. They are not stocking worthy in MY stocking, because for me, a stocking has favorite candies and those are not even close to a favorite for me. But they are definitely stocking worthy when someone likes them a whole lot or at least a whole lot more than I do! But when it comes to me filling stockings for others, I always include Clear Toy, a lollipop type candy that my grandpa, mom and I grew up with, and every year I include it even though no one else seems to care it is a must have stocking item in our family tradition. They till call it lollipop and I say Clear Toy. Every year. Well I put it in everyone's stocking including DGD and so I am passing it on against all odds. Anything in my opinion is stocking worthy if it fits in the stocking, despite cost if the person will want it. An Apple Watch could be stocking worthy if it fits.

Honestly, it’s just the place where I put the candy and the small, assorted things that I don’t wrap. Socks, gloves, Body Shop body spray, Aerie underwear, bangle bracelets, hair products, and Chapstick were some of the items I included in my girls’ stockings this year.

Ghiradelli chocolates are always in the adults' stockings. What a strange comment- what makes something stocking worthy? I wish OP had just quoted me because it makes it seem like I'm not right here when people are judging my comment. I explained above. Ghirardelli squares are a perfectly acceptable stocking worthy candy for people who like them. I do not, yet DH gets them every year like he forgets. Not just one bag, but 2. He buys them because they fill the stocking, not because I like them. That's why they are not stocking worthy in MY stocking.

How can you not like Ghirardelli chocolate? Seriously, it might not be the best chocolate in the entire world, but it puts Hershey and stuff like that to shame.
Yep, I’m still not forgiving that comment- seems extremely elitist.

Yep, I’m still not forgiving that comment- seems extremely elitist. Since I had weight loss surgery my taste buds and tolerance has changed, and chocolate is one of those things I cannot always tolerate and am not supposed to eat if I could. I used to love them, but for the past few years, I just can't do chocolate, at least most chocolate. DH knows that, but he also bought me 4 bags of peppermint chocolate covered pretzels. He's not getting it, although I know he's trying. I used to like it, now I don't. It's not elitist, I promise. Please reconsider!

This is the second year in 25 yrs. that we have been home for Christmas. So I got to do stockings this year! I put cheap stuff in our stockings since it was just my husband and three kids and I. We don't spend a lot at Christmas. We pretty much buy what we want all year, so Christmas is not too expensive. I put candy in ours and dog treats in our dog's stocking.

God love my sweet DH. As I posted in another thread, his idea of stocking stuffers is how many large bags of M&Ms can be stuffed in there.
This year I picked up a few little things I wanted and tossed them in my stocking along with the large bag of plain M&Ms, the large bag of Peanut M&Ms and a large bag of Gummy Bears. He was surprised to see a few things he knew he didn’t put in there.
I few hours later I asked me if I had any extra USB cubes. I laughed and said, why yes I do. I got a package of 4 of them in my stocking!! I decided that was so much fun, I’m going to collect little things all year for my stocking and really mess with his head.

Yep, I’m still not forgiving that comment- seems extremely elitist. I'll take a Hershey's almond bar over an entire Ghirardelli store any day. In fact, I'll take that cheap Palmer stuff at the dollar store over Ghirardelli.

In our stockings, anything from cute $1 Store paper clips to pot is welcomed. If it fits in the stocking, it's stocking worthy in my book.
