I didn’t realize there was another thread (sorry Sasha!). I find this whole thing my favorite type of schadenfreude. She’s not any type of Spanish. Her dad is from the Midwest and talks about how enamored of Spain he is but he has no Spanish blood. Both parents’ roots go way back in the US pre-revolution. They may have taken vacations to Spain, but she went to private school in Massachusetts. Her mother is a doctor and her father a lawyer. They moved to Spain in 2011. Hilaria was 28 when her parents moved there. She didn’t move there, she was a partner in a yoga studio in NY. Reddit is full of tea. www.reddit.com/r/HilariaBaldwin/

This story fascinates me.
Just curious - is this kind of considered... like blackface (not sure that is the right ? Or cultural misappropriation?
When I was a little girl, I used to give my barbies English accents. I just thought they sounded so sophisticated. But I never pretended *I* was British to others!

I can’t bring myself to care. She’s a celebrity’s wife. Not anyone important. I think right-wingers are jumping on this story because she happens to be the wife of an actor who impersonates Trump on SNL. No it because it matters in the slightest who she is or where she is from. Left-wingers too.

She co-opted a nationality so that she wasn't bland Hillary from Massachusetts. I posted this: people.com/tv/why-the-hilaria-baldwin-scandal-isnt-funny-its-painful-for-millions-of-immigrants-including-me/And I'm still getting grief from someone on the other thread who didn't even bother reading any of the links or why this mattered to the immigrant who wrote that piece.

I can't find myself overly caring. I don't really think she did anything awful (at least nothing from what I have seen).
I speak two languages fluently. One I speak at home and one I speak with the world (English). Sometimes I find myself saying that exact same thing (How do you say XXX in English), even though I am more fluent in English and consider that my mother tongue.
People also call me different names. I use one for English and one for French. Oh and one completely different one for my family.
ETA: FWIW, my kids were all born in the US. They consider themselves just as much Swiss as they do American. I'm not sure what is wrong with that. They are and have passports to prove it. They do not call themselves immigrants, though

I think that many on the left are probably more up-in-arms about the story because they care more about cultural appropriation, regardless of who is doing it. Agreed. To me, I can't help but wonder: Why did a bland white woman yoga teacher who married Alec Baldwin ever get the media attention she did prior to this revelation? Is it the "spicy Latina" accent? Apparently before she was described as the "mysterious Spanish yoga teacher..." and then Alec Baldwin loved in interviews to refer to his "Spanish wife" and then mimic her "Spanish" accent It odd b/c if she just loved the culture, became bilingual, and is teaching her children Spanish, I would be really impressed by that as would most people.

The more I read the more irritated I get with her. Just read some of the Reddit thread. WTF her brother apparently is a grifter (is that the right word? scammer?) with his health products he had his doctor mom give her testimonials for (only didn't reveal she was his mother). What a family, no wonder they went along with her charade. The gig is up. I'm wondering how much Alec really knew? In her recent Twitter she sounds like a Valley Girl now that she's dropped her fake ass accent.

I had never heard of her until the Amy Schumer body shaming post. Honestly, I am not at all an Amy fan so I was sympathetic with Baldwin. Interesting how this has played out.

Then she said she's a mix of "many many many many things" and "there are a lot of white people in Europe." She just "combined names" because she never liked the way either name sounded in Spanish. Then blamed reporters (very Trumpian) who reported that she was born in Spain which was on her own talent agency and IMDB bio and that didn't drop from the sky; also stayed uncorrected until now.

Only other thing to add is that I dislike Alec Baldwin but not for political reasons but because I still remember years ago when he referred to his 11 year old daughter a pig. “You have insulted me for the last time … You don’t have the brains or the decency as a human being. I don’t give a damn that you’re 12 years old or 11 years old or that you’re a child, or that your mother is a thoughtless pain in the ass who doesn’t care about what you do, as far as I’m concerned … You’ve made me feel like shit … I’m gonna straighten your ass out when I see you. I’m going to really make sure you get it … I’ll let you know how I really feel about what a thoughtless little pig you are. You are a rude, little pig, okay?”
Him and his daughter have since mended fences so I suppose I shouldn't care. However, it says everything I need to know about him.

There has always been something about her, Hillaria that I havn't liked. I can't put my finger on it. Just some sort of fakiness. Esp going on about miscarriages. Which I know can be terrible for some women, but she seems to have had a lot, and then went on and on about them fairly early on. And then it seems like 2 months later she was popping out another kid. There has been other things she has said also...just didn't sit right with me.

I think she had one that was early in the pregnancy and then another one at more like four months along. But then she did get pregnant with their newest baby quickly after that.

You seem overly invested in this. Come on - that's unfair. It's a message board and this is a person who lives her life out in the public eye and she's been telling whopping big lies, just because someone wants to have a gossipy conversation about that doesn't make them "overly invested". I barely know this "ilaria" but I was interested when the story broke - I like a bit of celebrity bat shit crazy to take my mind off other stuff sometimes. I hate it when people toss that out around here and try to shut down a relatively harmless post just because someone else either doesn't like them or doesn't agree with them. I've said this before, people who live out every aspect of their lives in public are fair game to talk about on a message board, and if they do something stupid, then I'm up for discussing it, and that doesn't make me (or anyone else) obsessed or too invested.

It's cultural appropriation to me (Hilary, not you giving your dolls an accent ). I love all things British. I have some British ancestry from my paternal grandmother. But I would never fake a British accent and call myself British. I was born in the U.S. and have 3 Mexican grandparents. While I'm proud of that little bit of British heritage, it would be ridiculous to bust out a British accent. And in Hilary's case, it's even worse. She doesn't even have Spanish ancestry as far as I can tell. Hilary should have just said that she loves the culture and the country, instead of pretend that she was from there and faked an accent.

I'm with you on the making me feel sick part, the whole thing was disgusting, but I'm not really surprised he still has a career, a lot of celebrities and people in the TV & movie industry either don't care about stuff like that, or have very short memories. I still can't get over how many actresses are willing to work with Woody Allen, or that he still gets to make movies and what he did was so much worse.

I just read on Daily Mail that she said her parents couldn’t pronounce the name Baldwin. Born and bred Americans, ok.
She incorporated all sorts of Spanish influences in the wedding. This whole debacle is fascinating and just keeps getting odder by the day.

I always think of that too, reminds me a lot of when Gibson went bananas too. Yet, people still work with him. However, I am pretty sure Kim Basinger is NOT over it, it doesn't appear they are friendly at all (not that they have any reason to be).
