This story fascinates me. Just curious - is this kind of considered... like blackface (not sure that is the right ? Or cultural misappropriation? When I was a little girl, I used to give my barbies English accents. I just thought they sounded so sophisticated. But I never pretended *I* was British to others! It is fascinating. It's cultural appropriation to me (Hilary, not you giving your dolls an accent ). I love all things British. I have some British ancestry from my paternal grandmother. But I would never fake a British accent and call myself British. I was born in the U.S. and have 3 Mexican grandparents. While I'm proud of that little bit of British heritage, it would be ridiculous to bust out a British accent. And in Hilary's case, it's even worse. She doesn't even have Spanish ancestry as far as I can tell. Hilary should have just said that she loves the culture and the country, instead of pretend that she was from there and faked an accent. I wonder if Spanish people think her fake accent sounds real. It's usually pretty easy to tell if someone is faking 'your' accent.

You mean me? I have no Japanese heritage except a biracial child. This is offensive Pjay. Ignore her Delta Dawn. We all know that accusation is bullshit. You have never claimed to be anything but Canadian.

Some Spanish speakers say her accent is really good; others I've read say that it's very slow and she's using phrases that aren't said in Spanish. I found it interesting that in one interview with a Spanish speaking journalist, Alec prompted Hilaria to do the interview in Spanish (he must get off on her speaking Spanish) but she refused and instead made him say the Spanish words he taught her.

It's all very batshit. I got sucked into reading a few interviews in Hola magazine and it's very clear that she perpetuated the idea that she is Spanish, what a tit.

I don't understand the hubris of these idiots.
She lives in 2020 - when there are cameras everywhere, when we have an internet with HISTORY, when she has living classmates who remember plain-old Hilary from Massachusetts in the upper-middle class AMERICAN PARENTS family.
And yet they try to get away w/this sh(#$* (and do - sometimes for YEARS before the sh(#$ hits the fan).
But, I will never understand how they think life works or how much force of will they have to craft the entire world to their lying narrative.

If she's truly bilingual (not really sure I believe that now) than that is something to be proud of. There's no need to make up a heritage she doesn't have.

I can't find myself overly caring. I don't really think she did anything awful (at least nothing from what I have seen). She and her family were featured twice in the Spanish speaking magazine Hola! The first interview she gave them, she said she was born and raised in Spain. In her Instagram stories, she said she was tired of the media getting it wrong. Yet, she still did another feature with them. It seems kind of shitty to steal the spotlight from someone who could be more deserving than a white woman he is a poser. I am not familiar with the magazine though. Maybe it's a celebrity gossip type of thing?
It is so odd! She had a privileged life with two very accomplished parents. She's been faking this for almost a decade. She was not born and raised in Spain. She never lived there. She didn't move to NYC from Spain when she was nineteen and her mother and father have zero Spanish ancestry. The only Spain connection she has with family is that her parents retired there. There's audio, print, and TV interviews with her lying. I don't see how you can spin this one.
I knew very little about her besides being Mrs. Baldwin #2 and much younger. I figured she was really into fitness and I thought she was trying to be some kind of influencer on Instagram.
The gig is up. I'm wondering how much Alec really knew? His first marriage ended so badly and he has tons of money, he had to do a little bit of digging.

BWAHAHAHA -- her Boston family couldn't pronounce "Baldwin" she told Vanity Fair! It has to be hard to pronounce Baldwin when you are born Hillary Hayward-Thomas and grew up in the United States your entire life. I wonder if Saturday Night Live will do a skit. I think it would be hilarious, but I think Alec has been the guest host the most amount of times. Maybe Lorne will veto the idea. His Donald Trump character will be ending soon, how could they not do it?!!
ETA: I find it funny this whole thing started when she was whining about Amy. People started posting on her Instagram rant, what happened to your accent?

It's so strange to me to be that obsessive over a culture that isn't even your heritage where your life centers on being from Espana! Even if it was, her singular focus on it seems odd.

This whole thing reminded me of a girl I went to high school with.
She was born in the 1950’s on an American military base in Germany to US citizens while her dad was stationed there. They moved to the US in about a year, if I remember correctly. She has always said that she is German. She took German in high school, spoke German or with a German accent. She was obsessed with all things German. Named her son a German name. Even to this day, on her FB page, it states “From Germany”. It was just her thing. She clearly identifies as German. Odd at times but whatever.

I admit to still being obsessed with this story. I also only vaguely knew who she was until the Amy Schumer tweet. I was also sympathetic to Hilaria’s initial response (I assumed she wasn’t American, didn’t get the humor, and I didn’t know about her never ending insta). I also crack up at people saying “Who cares?” or “Aren’t there more important worries?” I’m capable of being interested/concerned/amused at multiple topics at once. It’s not as if this woman has been ripped from private obscurity. This is part of her grift and she’s been caught out. It goes with the territory.

I also wonder why people are saying "So what, people reinvent themselves all the time." No, reinventing yourself means you went into a different direction, not fabricating your heritage. It's also funny to me how Trumpian their blame of this on the media is. Um, Alec, you talked about your "wife from Spain" and then mimicked her Spanish accent. It's hard for me to believe he was that stupid that he believed it, so he clearly was as bad as she is -- enjoying this supposed exoticism of her being Spanish all the while knowing she's Hillary from Boston.

My inlaws are retired Spanish teacher/Spanish university professor, lived in Spain for a year when my husband and sil were little. They love everything about Spain and Spanish and Hispanic people. My husband and sil speak Spanish and my inlaws visit Spain as much as they can. But they never called themselves Spanish! And for all I know, they speak Spanish at home in central PA. I would love to hear what they and their Spanish friends say about this!

Here's the quote from Daily Mail "She said: 'I had to repeat it to my family three times: Baldddwinnn. And the third time they said Oh, we already know who it is! Why didn't you pronounce it right the first time?'" So basically her parents couldn't understand *her* accent

Odd at times but whatever. At least she *was* technically born in Germany My husband has French and Belgian ancestry and a Belgian last name, and I have French ancestry as well (shock to me, but when I visited in college everyone told me I looked like I was from Brittany with my auburn hair and glasz colored eyes.) We both speak the language although we're both really rustt, and we love culture and history. But becoming fanatical is absolutely ridiculous. It's OK to enjoy a culture and immerse yourself in it. Giada deLaurentis and the American expert on French cooking Patricia Wells does it just fine. Without lying. Even changing your name is OK.

A neighbor of hers did a post on Reddit. Another neighbor also commented. They've noticed the accent comes and goes, but it was never anything anyone felt like they could bring up in casual conversation. They did say that Hilaria and Alec are very polite, kind to the neighbors and especially the building staff, and seem to be really good parents. The kids are very well behaved. Thanks lisacharlotte for the tip about the Reddit posts and R/HilariaBaldwin (all the threads about her should be posted there so you don't have to dig around)

I mean, if you made up all kinds of stuff that the kids you went to high school with could call BS on, wouldn't you be sweating it, wondering when someone was going to spill the beans? What made her think no one was going to come forward and say, "First of all, her name isn't Hilaria..." And then the cucumber incident and the "My family can't say my new last name" debacle... Lordy, what a psych study this would be! I'm fascinated with this whole crazy pants story.

That she doesn't seem to have female friends but turns the flirtation and charm on for men only.

This is worded a little unfairly. Amy Schumer’s post was not body-shaming. The only body I guess Amy might be shaming was her own. She posted a pic of Hilaria holding her baby in her bra and undies and Amy joked that it was a pic of her and her son Gene. She was just being lighthearted about the fact that she doesn’t look anything like that: she’s got a little bit of pudge. It’s kind of like that woman who posts those gorgeous pics of various models in different poses and then recreates them but with her more average looking body and face. Where it turned into body shaming is what some of the people in the comments (and we all know the nasty crap people always posts in comments) were saying.

She had two video posts on her Instagram account explaining her Spanish whatever. She deleted the most recent one.
The Trumpsters have now came out hard against her. Most of their comments are stupid. It has nothing to do with politics and socialism.
Besides being married to Alec Baldwin, I don't get the admiration of her having five kids close together probably because I grew up in a community where this was normal. There usually wasn't any extra help either. Good for her for having the resources, but I don't think it's amazing or anything.

I just never really understood her. She really turned me off of her when she would do red carpets with Alec and push her way in. After a while he seemed ok with her doing that but the interview was for him, not her. She seemed to want to be the star.
It took me a few days and I realized who that relationship reminded me of, Phil Hartman and his wife Brynn.
