I can’t bring myself to care. She’s a celebrity’s wife. Not anyone important.
I think right-wingers are jumping on this story because she happens to be the wife of an actor who impersonates Trump on SNL. No it because it matters in the slightest who she is or where she is from.

😱
I wasn’t familiar with the story before. I try to avoid all things to do with the Baldwins.
All reporters should do, again and again, when they try to shift the blame to everyone else just “misunderstanding,” is to come back and ask about her bio in which she clearly stated that she was born in Spain and only changed once she was busted.

Had no idea who she was - but in America there are certain names you can't miss because Google News and/or Twitter and/or IG and/or MSM INSIST on plastering them in your face whether you care or not. So, now, reading OP's link (since I'll sometimes be interested in a story when it gets to the peas - I know the story. What a sad little person she must be. "Someone from Spain not knowing the English word for cucumber is understandable. But someone who grew up in the Greater Boston area acting like they don’t know the word for cucumber? That raises all kinds of questions, not just about Hilaria’s Spanish heritage but about what she gains from faking it."

Sorry, I followed the whole thing and found it ... Hilarias.
The story is pretty pathetic but it was a welcome diversion from everything serious.

I barely know who she is, but I have been reading a bit more about her today after this started trending. What a strange thing to lie about, and then to think she wouldn't get caught out when people who knew her from years ago, knew she didn't have an accent then. Living in a country for a few years - doesn't make that your cultural heritage.
I guess she thought it made her/them sound more exotic and interesting and Alec seems to be tking a leaf out of Trump's playbook and is calling everyone frauds on Twitter. Such a bizarre thing to tell lies about when it's so easily disproven.

I dunno if the reason she didn't know the word 'cucumber' is because she was pretending to be Spanish or not, but I do have to say that I find myself 'forgetting' all manner of words that I should, or used to, know. I'll be talking and although I know that I *know* the word I want to say, I find myself reaching and fumbling for it. This happens to me more and more often-- I believe it's one of the 50+ symptoms of menopause. so 'forgetting' a word is not necessarily proof of 'pretending' anything about your heritage.

I followed her for a bit on Insta because I liked seeing her cute kids. I'm irritated as snot about this, just as I was about Donazal and Elizabeth Warren. STHU, there is nothing wrong with being plain old white. Stop trying to be 'cool' cause its in to be a POC. Ugh. Over the stupidity.

I didn’t know anything about her or her claim. I know of some Baldwin dramas, but more in general terms. But between sasha’s thread and this one I am learning a lot more. Sometimes distractions can be perfect little presents that you open at the perfect time. 😉😄

I watched the video, she definitely was pretending to not know the English version of the word, she says it, "how do you say it in English" If you are grasping for the actual word meno style (as I do all damn day), you don't say it like that. You stumble on the word or you say 'cauliflower' instead of cucumber.

so 'forgetting' a word is not necessarily proof of 'pretending' anything about your heritage You must not have seen the video clip, she says "tomatoes...and then points to the cucumber and says "how do you say in English?...cucumber?" I'm betting that when you forget a word you don't add "how do you say in English...?" That's where the 'pretending' comes in.

I didn't realize there was another thread until it was mentioned above - but it has a title that didn't entice me to open it...so I didn't see it until now- but there's a thread on page 2 titled "finally something good happens" and the video clips are posted there.

I somewhat follow Amy Schumer so I saw their issue recently regarding body shaming (Hilary was actually in the right there) and then Amy’s stab back at her when this story broke this week (Amy wore a huge sun hat and made a comment about totally getting it because she’d been to Spain a few times, too). Otherwise I didn’t know about this faking her heritage until sashs’s post (something finally good happened in 2020, sorry I can’t link it). It’s crazy she would think she could get away with this.

I didn’t know who she was before this. I was willing to give her he benefit of the doubt thinking maybe she hid her accent when she was young due to a fear of discrimination or something and now feels freer to express her heritage. But the cucumber thing sealed the deal for me that it’s just a farce. A native English speaker doesn’t say “how do you say in a English” about an English word. If she forgot the word that’s one thing (we all do that!) but to pretend the reason is that you don’t know English is just stupid.

Yup Hilaria and her motives aside. Not everyone who can not remember a word is pretending. It’s one of the symptoms from my thyriod issues. For me it’s the first sign that I need a med adjustment. I once forgot the word pie. “ would you like a piece of that round apple thing that we cut in triangles?” Sounds fantastic doesn’t it? God help me when I can’t extract the word thing from the rusty file drawers of my mind. Two weeks ago at the vet I could not for the life of me remember what model my car was. They ask what are to come get my dog from and I’m like ummm the gray Toyota ummmmm station wagon. Because ‘Prius’ was simply a blank hole in my brain. Ok on the OP, if she led a typical US life then she’s in class pictures all over the place when she grew up. Class pictures that the picture company owns and can do what they want with. So easily checked. And there’s always someone from your past who will want to spill the beans. But I get the desire to try to deny your American right now. We are the laughing stock of the world with the toddler in chief embarrassing the country every day fir the last however long. I’m just smart enough to know I couldn’t pull it off. She’s not.

It seems to me that she's trying to say she wasn't pretending to be Hispanic. I know every time I saw her on a talk show (like Ellen), she was speaking with a strong Spanish accent. I certainly assumed that she was Hispanic. Then she tries to couch it in 'diversity'. It's great that she's bilingual. That doesn't make her from Spain. I just wish people would apologize when they get caught or called out for something. Own that you put yourself out there as someone you're not. I think people would respect that a lot more than what she's doing now.
Then Alec is on Instagram saying "consider the source". Um, your wife is the source. She's the one who pretended to be something that she's not.

What a bizarre story!
This is the first I’ve heard about this.
Was Alec Baldwin in on it from the beginning? If so, it must have been really odd for him to hear his wife speaking at home w/ a Boston accent and then appearing on the Today show w/ a Spanish accent and asking what the English word for cucumber is. It would be even weirder, however, if he just found out that the wife was faking the accent all along.

I had no idea who she was, so I didn't get Amy's joke when she posted last week. The story is so cringe-worthy now that I have seen all the evidence. Hilary is nothing but a phony. It's so obvious. And it's not the accent. I'm Latina and don't have an accent, but my American born husband who grew up with 2 Mexican born non-English speaking parents has a little bit of an accent. Lots of my friends also had a slight accent for the same reason. But Hilary only spent a few years in Spain and her parents are both Americans. Hilary needs to find her own culture and stop trying to steal the Spanish culture and claim it as her own.

Just to give you a little backstory to the Baldwin family (LI/NY): Besides all of the salacious crap we've heard via msm, this family is quite incredible. Their mom developed breast cancer and the family has done a LOT for LI and for NY regarding breast cancer. They had a yearly breast cancer walk (Stony Brook, LI). There are ground-breaking radiology machines/dept in Stony Brook in Mrs. Baldwin's honor. They continue to raise money and bring awareness for breast cancer research. They personally appear and do the walk each year (not sure if they still do since I left NY 9 years ago)..........
So, for ALL of the crap we hear about the "Hollywood" side of this family, please know that they do a LOT of good & they are a tightknit, loving family.

A video of Alec on The Late Show in 2013 emerged Monday in which he impersonated his wife's 'Spanish' accent, telling David Letterman: 'My wife is from Spain.'
So he believed it to be true as well or just went along with it? How bizarre. I can only think it must be exhausting to keep up that level of pretence.
