January Craft Thread

I am going to teach myself to knit in 2021. I love seeing everyone's creations, and hopefully I willshow off my own soon.

Yay for learning something new in a new year! 
Remember, there are a lot of us in this group who knit, and would always be willing to help you out of you get stuck or confused.

I’m very excited for 2021 to get started but that’s mostly because 2020 was such a crappy year. I have most of January at home and because we’re under lockdown I will truly be at home for the next couple of weeks. Lots of quilting projects on the go: both piecing and machine quilting. Unfortunately, I fell off my bike yesterday and injured my shoulder so not sure how that will impact my sewing. So please post lots of pictures so I can live vicariously until my shoulder heals.

Happy New Year!   This will be a UFO and stash busting year in my sewing room.  With the exception of one baby quilt, my plan is to try to decrease the size of my stash.  There are seven quilts from last year's list of ten that need to be finished, as well numerous small projects.   They are all in various stages of completion, some almost done and others are just a stack of fabric/instructions.   Making more small gifts (zipper bags, totes, etc) is something I want to focus on this year.  Thinking the immediate satisfaction will provide motivation, as well as use up more fabrics.  I've discovered that I enjoy making something and mailing it off to an unsuspecting friend/relative, so I plan to do more of that this year.  

The other thing I plan to spend more time on is needlepoint.  It's easy to work on while I watch tv and keeps my hands busy.  I would like to learn how to finish my own projects as well.  It's really painful to write those big checks to the finishers (not to mention the long waits!).  

I recently competed my annual end of the year project of researching temperature blankets and deciding not to do one. I have been working on cleaning out the room where I keep my stash of yarn and it's ridiculous how much yarn I have leftover from previous projects or projects that I planned to do, but never did. This fall I completed a scrap blanket that I had been working on for a couple years and I loved it. It was a double strand using a cream colored yarn and then all the leftovers from my various Attic24 blankets. I am now working on a granny square scrap blanket using my Attic 24 leftovers. I love it so far and will keep it going until I run out of yarn. I like that you can keep adding to them later on when you complete other projects. 

So now, I think I'm working on a plan to get rid of my stash of Red Heart types of yarn. I'm thinking that I'm going to work on a bunch of lap size blankets for using in the car. the first one is going to be for me. I bought one for $1.5 at a thrift store that I always have on my lap when we drive home from hockey games. It's not pretty, but it's a good functional blanket.

But I'm a realist. I will be ordering the crochet along blanket from Attic 24 today. I should have done it a couple weeks ago so that I could have started on January 8th, but I shouldn't be too far behind when it comes.

I have some mini projects in 1/12th and 1.48th scale to finish up and a freestyle embroidery to make along with using new fabrics bought last year.
Mostly I will be making the minis I hade in my Advent calendar, 25 brand new kits, and then a new house to put them in
. Going to do a 1950s home as close to what my parents had (or would of liked) when they got married.
Lots of research needed for that project.
I also have a bit of a competition going with my DS to use resin in different ways in our model  making.
He`s  winning so far by making foam tips on waves, I`ve only done a pond.
But as for today the craft room needs a tidy and a good hoovering and then I`m going to eat chocolate and watch Doctor Who.

But that means finishing 2020's SAL first. I haven't touched that one since June. Yikes.

I am all in on the temperature quilt for my kiddo from her first year of life. I REALLY should use my stash but I'm going to get fabric. I need 15 colors and I don't have 15 from one line nor do I have enough to make a quilt that requires 110 HST of one color. soooo.... I'm going to buy fabric. ALL the fabric. Moda Grunge to be exact. Bought a 4.5" HST die. I already have a 5" so why not one that's only .5" smaller, right? It just makes the size work out better. Yes, that .5" matters. I will most likely end up doing a tie quilting on it because I am cheap and don't want to pay someone to long arm it and I'm not about to hand quilt it! I will probably even use store bought binding (gasp) if I don't feel like doing a pieced binding. I may do a pieced binding from scraps tho. It remains to be seen. I will have to piece the backing because it's going to be QUEEN size when it's done.

I finished the kids shutterfly books that are supposed to be presents for the grandparents for CHRISTMAS but I need to get pictures off my school computer that is at school so that will have to wait until next week when I get the computer and airdrop the pics to my person computer. THEN I can bust that out and get them ordered and sent.

Then there are the random vinyl projects that pop up along the way.
