don't throw away crayon bits. the crayons can be recycled.. google for a place that does it. you might offer pencils and good crayons to local school. or church that has a sunday school.

I’m really struggling with the amount of stuff I have and how difficult it is to get rid of things. It isn’t so much that I don’t want to get rid of things, it’s more that I see the condition and quality of the item and think I should try to sell it first. But now I’ve ended up with 3 bins of stuff to sell and I never get around to it. Logically I understand my mind will be clearer, and the peace I’ll get from letting this stuff go will be worth more than what I would make, but it’s still difficult. This long weekend I’m going to work on being cutthroat as I go through stuff.

I’m catching up on reading this thread and really proud of the work everyone is putting in. I can feel the sense of satisfaction from so many with their accomplishments!
We finally tackled the garage which became the catch all for the last bits we didn’t know what to do with when we moved into this house. Thank goodness because I turned up some tools I knew we had but hadn’t been able to find.
I remain committed to constant editing of our belongings. Even though I purged so heavily when we moved, I can still find random things that need to go. I’m especially brutal with clothes now. I have high standards for what stays in my closet. For many years earlier in life, I got pleasure out of having an overflowing closet. No more! It’s pared down to what I love and wear regularly with plenty of room to see what’s in there. I now find that so much more gratifying than the glut of before.

By donating items that are good quality and good condition, you're helping someone else get a quality item they otherwise might not be able to afford. Many items that are donated are usable but not always quality or good condition and people who can't afford to buy new often need good quality more because the item isn't so easily replacable if it breaks/wears out.

Great job on getting things into shape! So many don't realize that just a few small steps here and there does make a big difference. It's the best way to handle decluttering IMO. Burn out is too easy to hit when you go all in. Just yesterday I read a post by a local organizer that said the best place to start was with a drawer. The amount of stuff you are working with is limited so it will take less time, but the sense of accomplishment can be enormous! Baby steps is the way to go! Question for you all: I have lots of pencils and crayons--way more than I really need, especially since my boys are getting older and not into coloring as much. Any suggestions of what I can do with all these pencils and crayons? We're talking plastic shoeboxes full. Are there organizations who could use these things and don't mind if they're used? I will sort out the crayons and remove the tiny one-inch pieces, as well as pencil stubs. Thanks for any help! Maybe you could check with summer kid's programs or daycares to see if they could use your pencils and crayons. Or perhaps a teacher could use them, especially the pencils. I've also just sorted by type, bagged them and donated to the thrift store. Amazingly they do sell around here!

This long weekend I’m going to work on being cutthroat as I go through stuff. Common problem for many us - self included! A couple of things that are helping me: 1) donating it will help someone else and 2) How much is this realistically going to bring in. I find that doing a reality check on what people are paying vs what I consider my time to be worth helps tremendously. I have reached the point where it really needs to fetch $50 or more to be worth the effort. Perhaps this comparison of purging methods will help you reframe your thoughts! Steps required to sell an item:
1) Do "sold item search" on eBay/Poshmark for going prices 2) Take photos of item (cleaning first if needed) 3) Write a description of the item, take measurements 4) Upload item to website of choice to list it 5) Wait for item to sell, meanwhile answering messages about item 6) Once item sells, wait for payment (less fees if selling online) 7) Once payment received, package item for shipping OR Set up time for pickup 8) Take package to post office. If local pickup, pray like heck that they show up at agreed time and don't do a "No Show" 9) Cross your fingers that the buyer doesn't try to return it (eBay) versus Steps to donate an item:
1) Put item into box or bag 2) Call for pick up or take box/bag to thrift store. 3) Have a cup of coffee and tackle the next project on your list! ETA: Wanted to clarify that the minimum amount I will sell for is a personal decision based on what I value my time at, as well as our current financial situation. For someone dealing with unemployment or under employment, that number may well be lower for you. The point is to figure out what your bottom line is and use it as a guide in donation vs selling.

I had to do this myself. It makes it so much easier to let go of things and get past the "but I could get $xx for this item". Maybe I could, but at what cost? There are no free bananas as they said in a country I used to live in. There is a cost to every decision, either in time/money/mental stress etc. Good luck with your decluttering and purging!

Yesterday, I went in search of my favorite watch and the links to extend the band. . It had been put aside in favor of a Fitbit a number of years ago. The last Fitbit was junk and I am just done with fitness trackers.
In the process, I rid my drawers of a medium sized trash bag of under things and socks. Some of the underwear were crunchy. LOL! Some things I knew I would never wear again. And, even if they were still wearable, anything discolored were tossed. No mate...tossed. Tossed my favorite pair of pjs because the fabric felt weird. Tossed a couple of jewelry boxes. In total, I went through 6 drawers.
My son helped by being the voice of reason. At one point I was hoping something was “crunchy.” He pointed out my obvious desire to be able to throw it out; so, just throw it out and don’t worry about it.
In the end, the watch bits were in a drawer in my bedside table.
So, what do I do with jewelry I don’t want or can’t wear? I am being shunned by the family I would normally pass these things onto.
Today I will be searching for a necklace and ring I can’t find. I haven’t worn the necklace for years. The Fibro eventually made wearing anything on my neck impossible. And, the ring is my favorite—I do have an idea where it is.

So, what do I do with jewelry I don’t want or can’t wear? We went through my mother's jewellery last year -some real, some decent costume, some cheap. What we wanted, we kept. The rest we didn't. The good stuff - we brought to a jeweller who bought much of it - some for resale, some to melt down. The good (vintage) costume - we sold on consignment to a clothing resale boutique that focused on vintage clothing. What didn't sell went on FB marketplace. The cheap stuff - my brother in law bundled into lots and sold on ebay for a couple of dollars a piece In the end, whatever didn't sell, went to the thrift store.

We exclusively donated for the past 30 years; I don’t think we tried to sell anything other than gold, matter how much it could bring in, if for no other reason than when I made the decision not to keep it, I wanted it gone...yesterday. But we did have some things we held on to to sell, and they weren’t really worth holding onto if I take into consideration the space they took up and mental weight they created before we finally got around to doing it. They didn’t get as much as we expected, so many things didn’t sell anyway, and getting people to show up when they said they were going to was a real PITA sometimes.
It’s down to DH’s coins and trading cards and that feels amazing. The goal was several months ago but it hasn’t been the priority so got pushed aside. Need to get back to it! Oh, and I just remembered I have some jewelry I’m considering selling. I’m sure the James Avery will sell easily for a decent price, once I get it cleaned and photographed and listed (groan). But not sure if it would be best to try consignment like listed above, or if someplace like Etsy might be better for the more vintage costume jewelry. I have no idea if so of the gems might be worth anything or what metals they might be. Have any of y’all had any experience?
When you’re donating you might also consider a shop that benefits a charity that means something to you, another way to make it feel better, less guilt, about the money you think you might bring in if you were able to sell it. I know some churches do this, and locally we have a shop that benefits our animal shelter.
I think someone else mentioned consignment, I think that’s a great idea. If they accent the item, it then becomes their “mess” to deal with. And if it doesn’t sell it he designated timeframe you probably won’t want to bring it back into your house so you can just drop it by the donation station when you pick it back up from the co-signment shop. I will say though, several shops weren’t taking items in our area, or were only taking larger furniture items but no decor items, even high end.

Went over last night to help DD hook up an AppleTv we just gave her and ended up helping her for an hour or so with organizing. The back of my SUV was pretty full when I came home! A bedcover I had loaned her is in there. I don't love it, it's heavy as heck and it shrank up so doesn't fit our king size bed well anymore. I will wash that today and place in the donation box. The old AppleTv came back and I will recycle that, but forgot to sign out of everything so need to do that first.
The biggest thing is the XL twin Tempurpedic mattress topper we bought for her first year in college...in 2006! For many years she kept is as a place for friends to crash, we had it when we lived in Paris and it was used by many college students that came to stay with us. Later it was folded in half and became a dog bed for her old dog (who died 2 years ago). She finally told me last night she was ready to part with it. No matter the age, emotions play a big part in dealing with our "stuff". I need to look at it in the daylight, but am pretty sure it will be going into the trash bin.
This weekend is low key for us and I'm not quite sure what I will work on. Most likely the dining room pile and the photos/slides project. Hope all the American participants of the thread have a safe weekend.

For the coins, I'm going to suggest you find a good numismatic store locally. We have one in Houston that we've used for 30 years. They always pay a fair price and once we sell the coin to them no one can come back to us with problems. Ours will even buy good silver and jewelry. Tagging alsomsknit since she mentioned selling jewelry as well. I think it's often an overlooked source for selling items. As for the James Avery jewelry, you live in the heart of JA country! I would think selling locally through your Facebook pages or NextDoor would work. I have several items that I no longer wear, as does DD, but we are hanging onto it all for now since it doesn't take up that much space.

Thanks, logged out for a bit but this is one of the first threads I stopped into even though we aren’t currently decluttering and my organization projects got pushed aside I didn’t consider taking the jewelry into the coin store, thanks! Most of the coins probably aren’t worth much, one a couple hundred but that’s it (considering what they cost though most were gifts), but as with the other things he’s sold it’s all going into a pot for a new bike so any little bit helps...and has made him more willing to take action. Win-win. See, that’s what I was doing with the JA as well, but then I realized I could buy new JA jewelry with the profits! And my wish list is pretty extensive. I think these are next on my list. Gold Leaf Earrings. They’re different than any other stuff I own, but they just call to me! Though I have several requirements that are being retired so I should get them first.

Though I have several requirements that are being retired so I should get them first. Oooh, pretty! I'm not a dangle earring person, but DD is. She would love those! DH sold off half a collection he inherited from his dad over the winter/spring. I encouraged him to take a fishing trip with it but he wanted to put it into something that was more of an investment. As a result, I now have a very nice watch that I'm half afraid to wear in Houston these days! I do think having a goal in mind is helpful when selling items. That may be part of my problem. In the past there was always a goal for the eBay money. There hasn't been for a couple of years now. Looks like I need a new goal!

So jealous! I think almost all of the earrings that I own are dangle earrings, and hoop-type earrings. But that is because I have really abnormally large earlobes so the pretty and small earrings look lost on them, like an island floating at sea . Do earlobes get bigger as you get older, like noses? Cause it’s getting out of hand!

would it help to reframe it? By donating items that are good quality and good condition, you're helping someone else get a quality item they otherwise might not be able to afford. If you are in the Seattle area, I recommend donating to Children's Hospital Bargain Boutiques - they have several locations. www.seattlechildrens.org/giving/shopping/bargain-boutiques/The proceeds go towards helping kids and their families through the uncompensated fare fund. I find it is easier to give higher end donations to them versus Goodwill or Value Village.

When I recently made a trip to visit my sister (who is downsizing) I brought some things home with me (it was easier for her to part with things that she gave to me than just getting rid of stuff!) So I went through the things this past week and was able to pare it down about half! I also went through some photo albums and condensed some. I didn't get rid of any photos, but filled in some empty spaces in some of them, which meant I eliminated 2 albums. I still have photos in boxes, so will wait until I get those put into albums before I get rid of them. I looked through about 5 other albums, and in one full album I don't know who anybody in the album is, so I'll probably give that album to my husband's brother--I think the people may be people he'd know.

I've been going through my digital photos and editing--not "making pretty" editing but purging bad/duplicate photos. I decided in January to go through 2014 month-by-month, starting with, ofc, January. So I did May 2014 this past week. I pared it down from about 300 photos to 180. (I try to make one photo a day, but, when I'm editing non-important events, I pare down multiples to ONE photo. Two if it involved both kids.) I have two kids, so if I made a photo of each kid on every day, then that's at least 60 photos for each month. IOW, 180 still seems like a lot, but based on family activities and on individual photos, it's not too shabby!
So this isn't a purge that's noticeable to anyone else, but seeing this change in my EHD and knowing my kids will have an easier time finding good/relevant photos if themselves makes me happy! (Going forward, this "edited" EHD is the one I'll use to back up new EHDs. That way the purged photos are (1) still on other EHDs--I currently have 3--but (2) they won't keep taking up unnecessary space on new EHDs.) And new EHDs cost money, so why waste (digital) space on photos I don't need?

Seriously? This is a thing? As if I didn't have enough issues to worry about with aging, now I've got to add "fat earlobes" to the list. No matter how chubby I got, you could always depend on purses and earrings as a shopping outlet. Guess I'll need to focus on purses now! less fat and more elongated For me, it’s longer and wider, not so much thicker. Though to be honest, nothing*** on my body can be accused of being thin...even my earlobes I've been going through my digital photos and editing--not "making pretty" editing but purging bad/duplicate photos. And new EHDs cost money, so why waste (digital) space on photos I don't need? I’ve also been doing a lot of digital purging and organizing and it feels so good! I know it doesn’t change a lot physically, but it really helps mentally, and makes it so much easier using my devices/apps/etc. I have a list of about a dozen or so items and I set an Alexa timer for 5 minutes each to make my way through all of them then start the list over. Things like Photos on phone, photos iPad, bookmarks, Pinterest, Evernote, Paprika, notes app, Kindle app, gmail, yahoo, iPad itself (fix notifications, delete unused apps, org icons), same for phone, TwoBeas bookmarks, Amazon shopping lists, etc. Part of what I work on is not having more than 25 items in my emails, more than 25 internet tabs open (huge for me), more than 25 uncategorized items in Kindle, or 50 incomplete items in Paprika. These improvements make just as much of an impact on my day to day life, if not more. And I make better choices going forward to keep them in good shape. *** eta: Just noticed something that made me laugh and had to come back and update. The original statement is a lie. I have the tiniest ankles. Really, oddly tiny. They look like they are going to collapse under the weight of me! Or, you know, a 5 yr old.

So any to thank for ideas on the jewelry. I honestly don’t know which is good and which is more costume. Mostly earrings, a few necklaces. I developed a severe allergy to something in earrings quite a number of years ago. So, they have basically languished in a drawer. Friday, I commandeered my son’s new sleep earrings. He doesn’t need them yet, as his piercings are only a little over 2 weeks old. I have worn these since Friday afternoon without issue. This morning, I discovered titanium replacement hooks. So, a few may be able to be worn again. I have been so excited about this new development and making plans for a few piercings if this works. The Boy and I cleaned some expired food from the kitchen cabinets yesterday afternoon. About half a kitchen trash can. It wasn’t a full clean out just what was easy. The chunky PB started it. LOL!

I got a few things accomplished this week despite a lot of crazy running around. Cleaned out DS’s clothes and managed to find new uniform shirts the next size up with the tags still on in a box. He wore too small shirts the last 3 weeks of school because I refused to buy new ones. He can’t even where the ones I found in August because he needs a different color. I’m going to see if the store will let me exchange them for the new color. I also tackled my clothes and need to bag those to take to the resale store on Tuesday.
I got the pantry cleaned out and restocked. I’m halfway through mount laundry and finally got all the dirty dishes caught up (DH is usually the dish guy but he’d been working late all week). Reorganized one of the kitchen cabinets with the dishes and plastic ware in it. Also got DS’s play dough cleaned out.
My summer project at work is to go through the school’s storage closets and clean out and inventory what we have. In 3 hours on Friday I managed 2 large trash bags in the dumpster and I didn’t even scratch the surface yet.
Even though I got a bit done it still feels like I haven’t even made a dent. I’m avoiding my office/scraproom because it became a paper and random crap dumping ground this past month. Just so overwhelmed.
