So I know the Thanksgiving sides thread has gone around/is still going around... What about things to serve before dinner? We typically have our dinner at 2:00. I'd like to have some appetizers that could be put out about noon for snacking on while dinner is getting finished. What kinds of things to you serve, or have had at your gatherings?

Typically I don't serve appetizers because I want everyone to be hungry when we have the main event. If I do put anything out it would be a pickle and/or vegetable tray.

My mother-in-law hosts Thanksgiving and enjoys putting on a full spread of appetizers in the early afternoon, but I really have to watch myself so that I'm still hungry for dinner! :-)

I usually have a tray of cheese and crackers (sometime summer sausage slices), and then a tray with pickles, olives and baby carrots. We always need a little something to graze on before it's time to eat. It's easy and pretty light.

We put out a veggie tray, relish tray, and cheese and crackers.
One year I put out Spinach Dip in a bread bowl, and everyone went crazy for it. We had tons of dinner leftovers. Everyone filled up on the dip, ripped the bread bowl to shreds, then weren't hungry for dinner.

I've learnt that protein-based nibbles make the day go smoother when serving a big holiday dinner - so that's what we focus on.
cheese cubes little smokies or cocktail meatballs cheese ball or shrimp dip or ham/cheese dip with crackers veggies with hummus shrimp

We don't do appetizers because the main meal is so large.

I like some of the idea you've all given me. I've never done apps either because the meal is so large, but I need a way to keep a few people out of my way and, I get hungry doing all the cooking and would love something to help tide me over as well!

Nuts. linda says protein. Nuts are high in protein, too. There's protein in everything.

Brie with a caramel, dried apple & cranberry and pecan topping served with water crackers. My daughter usually brings a baked brie very similar to yours to our Thanksgiving except her recipe uses pears instead of apples. She serves hers with torn miniature french bread pieces. So delicious, but so easy to over indulge upon before a big meal.

eleezybeth your link doesn't work. I would love to have that recipe! Gah! Sorry about that. It was acting wonky on the IPad but... Alas I'm on my phone and can't fix it. Google Taste of Home bacon wrapped sweet potatoes. Seriously delicious!! They are a bit spicy, sweet and then bacon? It's a godlike confection!

My sister makes an incredible crab with artichoke dip. Crab with a "C" not a "K" !!! She serves it with crackers and crudites. We look forward to it every year. We only see it at Thanksgiving

Occasionally, I do breaded artichokes. I take several boxes of frozen artichoke hearts, dip in egg and breadcrumbs, and deep fry.

Cheese & crackers, olives, pepperoni slices--an antipasto kind of spread is what I tend to serve around lunchtime as dinner is still cooking.

My mom typically sets out a cheeseball and crackers, some hummus and pita chips, and maybe some olives or a small relish tray.

My sister always makes queso dip, I always bring a crock of meatballs, and there's veggies/dip.
We do thanksgiving ALL day and then all night we play poker and bring out the leftover apps and dinner.
