He was facing "a maximum penalty of up to 180 days in jail and a fine of up to $1,000" and probably the loss of his job at a bank. I guess this was the sort of non "low-class" rioters that DT was hoping for? Any bets on how long it takes for the crazies to start screaming how Nancy Pelosi or Hillary Clinton climbed through his basement window and shot him in the chest?

What. A. Mess.
As bad as that maximum penalty is, an individual could recover from that. There is more going on there with this person, as well as thousands of others who were there.
I'm so sorry for that individual's family and friends, regardless of where they stand in all of this. People are people and he will be missed by many I am sure.

I personally suspect there are several of the rioters that have 'more going on', and have been using their engagement in QAnon/Donald Trump/hatred for liberals as an outlet. When the riot didn't have the expected outcome, they are bound to be feeling left with complete disillusion. Which would fuel pre-existing 'goings on' in their heads. I'm basically saying mentally ill people are using Trump-supporting as an escape. When it didn't have their preferred outcome, they are left with even worse mental health.

I'm basically saying mentally ill people are using Trump-supporting as an escape. When it didn't have their preferred outcome, they are left with even worse mental health. There is this guy on twitter whose name is something about being a reformed MAGA (he has a pretty decent following and maybe one of the verified checks, too...I just don't use twitter for much, so I don't keep track of anyone there). He was obese and overall just really unhappy with life...got help, got fit and is now recognizing all the things that made MAGA appeal to him in his downer state. So I can totally see that being the case with a lot more MAGA and then being unable to come to grips with everything upon realizing you've been duped after you break many federal laws on top of the years of undying support and essentially worship? Yeah...that would be tough.
I don't have any empathy for people who choose to be this ignorant of reality, however. There are far less destructive coping mechanisms than this cult.

Unstable cult followers who have been abandoned by their cult and are facing consequences are in crisis.
They were preyed upon and recruited by hate groups - this is what terrorist groups do, prey on/recruit disenfranchised people around the world. And the followers believed their recruiters/leaders had the power to reward them for their actions in the insurrection. They honestly thought that their lives would be better after they participated in an attempt to overthrow the government.
They are now left to face the consequences alone. No leader of the Proud Boys (or whichever hate group they associate with) is swooping in to provide them a lawyer, negotiate their charges, and hold their hands when the FBI knocks on their door.
I hope that the FBI continues to find and show up at as many doors as they can this week, ahead of this weekend. And are as public as possible about it. I think that that will be the only possible deterrent to the future planned violence starting Saturday. The Unite the Right March in DC following the Charlottesville protest had fewer than anticipated protesters after many who participated in Charlottesville were outed on the internet and lost their jobs. This won’t stop the jobless guys living with their moms, but it may cause those who actually hold jobs and pay mortgages to think twice.

It's now 6 people who have been killed by Trump's lies. 7. 4 "fans", 1 officer beaten to death, one officer by suicide and now this guy. (And that doesn't take into account the number of Americans who have died because of his handling of the plague)

I'm very surprised the maximum sentence is that small! All he had been charged with so far is: “He was charged with attempting to "enter certain property, that is, the United States Capitol Grounds, against the will of the United States Capitol Police,” the police report states.” He might not have actually made it into the Capitol building. Or they may have been collecting more evidence and more charges would follow. Supposedly, they are handing out initial charges as quickly as they can and will levy more charges against a number of people as more evidence is considered. The more people that are initially charged quickly, the less likely those people will participate in violence between now and the 20th.

I just don’t get it. What about his life was so awful that he decided to break into the freaking US Capitol? A beautiful home, a good job, a wife who apparently cared about him... How could he not see that the real world he was in was pretty darn good? How could he believe a bunch of made-up stuff and psychotic ranting? Have people played too many video games or something? Why have they lost touch with sanity and reality? It just blows my mind. SMDH

I agree. I have seen many of the rioters who are lawyers, company owners etc. They are not all unemployed coal miners.

Wow...I missed this story, and this is very local to me. I think a lot of these people are finding a 'sense of belonging' in these stupid message boards/chats, wherever these plans are going. They get so caught up in their own fireball of misinformation, that they lose all sense of reality.
I'd guess - although it's just that - that he may have lost his job? I don't know anything about BB&T's policies, but a portfolio manager for a bank getting charged with a crime against the Government, probably doesn't sit well. Alpharetta is a very well to do area. His 'secret life' being exposed (assuming most friends were unaware) probably didn't go over well.

If he hadn't already lost his job, I'm sure that it was coming - along with more serious charges depending on what he did on Jan 6th. Good point about his views being exposed to his neighbors/friends. I do feel terrible for his family, no matter what their particular political persuasions are - no wife should have to find her husband like that.

Why have they lost touch with sanity and reality? Brainwashing for years by right-wing media, churches, online communities. Irrational fears about straight, Christian, CIS white men are being "replaced" by *gasp* women, BIPOC, LGBTQ, secular Americans. Yes, these other marginalized communities are FINALLY taking their place at the table of America. And that scares and angers the shit of a scary % of the straight, Christian, CIS white boys. They're afraid minorities will treat them as horribly as they've treated minorities for hundreds of years. We won't. Cuz we're better than that. Better than many of them.

I'm basically saying mentally ill people are using Trump-supporting as an escape. When it didn't have their preferred outcome, they are left with even worse mental health. There is something very off with a person when a previous MIL is talking about how thankful she is that her daughter got away. He might not have actually made it into the Capitol building. Or they may have been collecting more evidence and more charges would follow. Supposedly, they are handing out initial charges as quickly as they can and will levy more charges against a number of people as more evidence is considered. It sounds like his initial arrest and charge were for breaking curfew.

It's now 6 people who have been killed by Trump's lies. I'd add the 392,000 American Covid deaths, aka "Teh Hoax!!111" to those six. And the deaths of our soldiers in Afghanistan due to the Russian bounties. But they're just "losers" and "suckers." And the deaths of Kurds who were abandoned by Trump for Putin and Erdogan. The whole GOP is a death cult at this point.

I think a lot of these people are finding a 'sense of belonging' in these stupid message boards/chats, I don't mean to imply this is a radical message board or anything, it just crossed my mind that I'm sure they do after seeing how many of us feel a sense of belonging at times from this one. And that scares and angers the shit of the straight, Christian, CIS white boys. Adding something to the effect of "who are a-holes" to that sentence, as I know a lot of straight, Christian, CIS white boys who are fully supportive of other groups being treated right - my husband and my dad, for starters.

How could he believe a bunch of made-up stuff and psychotic ranting? . . . Why have they lost touch with sanity and reality? It just blows my mind. It blows my mind how any of them are like that - I mean some of the conspiracy theories out there are just unreal. Yesterday I was reading on twitter (don't recall how I found it) that someone was saying that the woman that crawled through the window and was shot was a hired actress and the whole thing was faked and was just an acting job. My sister likens Trump's followers to those of Hitler's and Manson's - somehow he is able to control these people's minds and get them to do his dirty work. I just don't get it. I feel bad for this man (not for what he did but obviously he was fighting demons in his mind) and I feel bad for his family. He wasn't facing major fines or jail time - I think he just couldn't take the stress of it all anymore - I think he convinced himself that he'd be better off dead then having someone besides Trump as president...so sad, really.

Listening to the DOJ press conference yesterday gave me the impression that these people are initially charged with these lighter charges from the police and the federal charges will follow later. I am sad for his family. Kind of sad for all those who have fallen under the spell of "Trump as a deity."

Adding something to the effect of "who are a-holes" to that sentence Absolutely. You're right. I try to always qualify and I didn't there. Will fix it. Thank you!

I don’t know why we (generally) are making excuses or trying to rationalize this guys thoughts. He’s a criminal who attempted to overthrow a democratic election. He chose to kick himself because he couldn’t deal with the consequences of that. So far those consequences were pretty minor. The equivalent of a first degree misdemeanor isn’t very serious. Actions have consequences. His consequences are a result of his bad choices.

I don’t know why we (generally) are making excuses or trying to rationalize this guys thoughts. I think it's important to understand why people do these kind of things and have particular beliefs in order to (hopefully) put things in place to prevent more people from doing/thinking/saying dangerous things.

I agree that it’s important to understand the broad strokes of why and the psychological underpinnings of this kind of group think. I still think that white men are given excuses and rationalizations that come off as excuses where other groups who commit similar acts do not. Many of the comments read as rationalizations or excuses to me.

I actually received a government research grant to study the psychological profiles of terrorists in 2002. I’m sorry if my post comes off as a rationalization or excuse to you - just sharing knowledge.

I’m referring to the comments that they feel sorry for him or question his sanity — I think these people are largely sane in the sense they know exactly what they’re doing and why. They just don’t believe they will ever be held accountable
