It’s been super windy here in San Diego, and I got a call from the manager of The Redwoods (Wawona rental property managers) that my house is one of 12 they manage that was damaged by the winds. I’m waiting on pics now. Hopefully it’s minor. awww so sorry! It looked like so many homes were damaged. We rented a cabin through The Redwoods last summer - it was perfect. Wouldn’t that be funny if it were your cabin??

How am I supposed to sleep tonight? It sounds like my entire roof is blowing away at the moment. There are windows over my bed and I’m kind of afraid they’re going to blow in at some point. I feel like I should get dressed (in case of real emergency) and try to sleep downstairs instead. How do people in hurricane country stand this? I grew up in South Louisiana and now live in West Houston area. We are used to hurricanes and usually prepare for them. We have a couple of heavy duty extra large tubs with supplies and a generator. The windows in my house haves panes although most of the ones in our neighborhood just have an overlay to make it look that way. We also tape up and cover windows. however, we often have strong winds, and we just ride them out. And yep- winds are often greater than 15 miles per hour, along with lots of rain, etc. it can be pretty scary. I don’t particularly care for it. We also store loose things in the yard, garden items, chairs, etc. so the wind doesn’t blow them around. I usually keep meds handy, glasses, shoes and a change of clothes, toiletries in a tote handy to grab if we have to get out. So for DH and sons. Hope the weather improves!

I did promise someone on this board though that I would let people know when we start renting it!

I just got some pics, the damage is indeed minimal. A small tree fell on the back of the house and just caught the edge of the roof. It looks like the edge is a little dented.

Thanks for letting us know. katiekaty, eeeek, that sounds horrifying. Fortunately our high winds died down the next day. I’m not sure how well I’d cope with frequent wind events like yours.

When I was growing up when there were hurricanes, we didn’t have generators so families(aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, even neighbors got together to ride out the storms. We had hurricane parties and got to eat up all the perishable foods (barbecue all the meat, we baked, just ate anything that wouldn’t last without electricity) and us kids got to stay up all night. Thank goodness for gas stoves for cooking! I guess that’s why it doesn’t really bother me, we knew to be prepared, high ground, be safe, go inland, etc. Unfortunately, it seems like the hurricanes are getting bigger and badder and more frequent. My MIL says that really isn’t so, they just come in groups and sooner or later, we will see years of lighter ones. I hope so. Y’all take care out there in the Wild West!

Update: Bad news about Wawona, there is extensive damage to the area. I know there were 12 cabins managed by The Redwoods that were damaged (mine being one with apparently really minor damage) and many more properties were significantly damaged. According to the Wawona Facebook page many will have to be demolished. Power is still out and is not expected to be restored until Monday at the earliest. (Several snowstorms are moving into the area so personally I will be surprised if power is actually back on that soon.) Apparently the hotel and the pioneer center are okay. I wanted to post the update because I know there are many members here who love and visit the area.

That’s really too bad about the damage to so many properties but glad to hear yours had minimal damage and that the hotel is fine. It’s such a pretty area.
