Parents were just sent an email saying that playing instruments in band had been approved for middle school and junior high students and that we need to purchase masks with holes in them for our band students. Does anyone else think this sounds completely absurd?
I feel for the band teachers, it would absolutely be frustrating to not be able to teach what you have been trained to teach. But masks with holes? Lunacy. And how does that work for my flute playing daughter?

So stupid.

I Googled it and found there are masks specifically designed for band members. Who knew? The bell of some of the instruments need to be covered as well.

That's absolutely ridiculous! Did they give a link for where to purchase such masks?

Are they still gonna drain their spit valves on the carpet in the bandroom? 🤣

That’s officially the dumbest thing I’ve heard all day. Ditto Especially since the aerosols are all going to be coming out of the instrument. I’ve seen a couple of college band ensembles that have ‘masks’ for the end of their instruments. Yes, air can escape various other places depending on the instrument but the majority of it us coming out the end. Not that I think that’s 100% either but it makes more sense than a mask for your face with a hole in it. Although I guess the mask with the hole will cover their noses. But if your not doing anything with the instrument then the instrument is projecting aerosols all over the place so I’m not sure that masks will do much once that’s being blown all over

Are there any studies showing effectiveness of these masks? That's crazy. Our choir still can't meet and sing with masks on.

My band student has a cover for his trumpet and a mask with a hole in it. Makes no sense, and a lit of parents complained, but they've been doing it since they started back in person.

Our HS band has been rehearsing in the auditorium so they can all spread out. They have the masks you're talking about (my dd calls it an underpants mask). They also have bell covers on the instruments.

They also have bell covers on the instruments. A friend of mine is a band teacher and this is what they're doing, as well. We're not convinced it's terribly effective, but I believe our official position on this whole topic is supposed to be, "It's better than nothing."

Oh yes, my grandson was in marching band last year. They wore face masks and so did the instruments. They did not get to parade, but they were able to participate in three band competitions. The schools agreed not to judge the programs and the stands had to empty between each school, but they got to be outside and march and play!!

They are doing the same thing at my granddaughter’s high school here in Texas as well...

I wondered how band would work with masks. I'm glad my musicians are in orchestra.

String instruments don't spread aerosols like winds and brass. You can wear a mask and play a cello.

Don't most orchestras also have brass and woodwind sections?!!? Or is that the symphony vs chamber difference?

I can’t get a photo to post, but Google Texas A&M band masks to see how those things end up getting worn. Useless.

String instruments don't spread aerosols like winds and brass. You can wear a mask and play a cello. I didn't realize the wind instruments were not considered part of an orchestra. I considered the whole ensemble of wind, string, and percussion instruments to be "orchestra" or "concert band".

Our high school has symphony orchestra that includes brass and woodwinds and chamber orchestra which is just winds I think.

I considered the whole ensemble of wind, string, and percussion instruments to be "orchestra" or "concert band". Most high schools here have a string orchestra, and wind instruments play in the band. There’s so much focus on technique in a school ensemble that it wouldn’t make pedagogical sense to have both together except in rare cases where there are two teachers for one ensemble.

I considered the whole ensemble of wind, string, and percussion instruments to be "orchestra" or "concert band". In our school, orchestra is solely stringed instruments: violin, viola, cello, bass. Winds, brass, and percussion are part of symphonic band. Occasionally, they would combine for some concert numbers (small percussion sections and winds/brass coming in to be part of orchestra).

Are they still gonna drain their spit valves on the carpet in the bandroom? 🤣 I'm still in touch with all of the band teachers the boys had (one quit after middle school), and they had been posting about their plans to return. Puppy pee pads are being placed under the brass kids.
