I think I've talked about this here before, but I wanted to mention it again. I'm the loon that saves her 12" branding strips. At the end of the year, I count them to see how many pieces of paper I've used. It's a rough number. Cardstock doesn't generally have a branding strip but the half sheets I use up I'll count that as a whole sheet even if I didn't use the other portion that year. It all averages out. I knew I scrapbooked less in 2020. Some things happened in January and February that I struggled with. Then I was in a rough spot with trying to adjust to teaching without students in front of me. It all took a hard toll, and I only used 175 sheets of paper. That's the least since I started counting in 2017. But you know what? That's 175 pieces of paper used up and in albums! I decided to add up all the totals from 2017 on, and my jaw hit the floor. In four years, I've used 1,125 sheets of paper! That's stacks and stacks of layouts, memories, and stories documented. I keep all my strips in the jar below. I wish I had another that size but IKEA doesn't sell them anymore. I doubt myself a lot. I wonder if anyone actually likes the layouts I create aside from my husband and daughter who are required to like them. I question if anyone really enjoys my YouTube channel or Facebook group. (Depression and anxiety suck in case anyone was wondering.) That's the reason I keep the jar. I can look at it and remind myself that even if no one else likes what I'm doing, I'm having fun and using supplies.

I love that idea. I should do it, too!
I don't care if anyone loves or saves my work. I hope my grandchildren will cherish their albums. But, I had fun doing all the layouts, learning new things, scrapping with friends, and generally maintaining my sanity through playing with paper.

View AttachmentI just wanted to say that American Crafts and Shimelle have YOU to thank directly for all my "Never Grow Up" purchases. Your video earlier this year using those supplies directly led me to purchasing them. You used them in new and fantastic ways and I thought, wow, I really need this collection. That is a lot of paper, you go girl! I think it is cool to save the branding strips, I can't throw mine away either. I never thought of counting them though-I usually try to use them but it's hard. Your videos are super fun and approachable, they are not intimidating and you don't talk down to people. Thank you for making them!

I have never kept my branding strips or counted how many sheets of paper I use. Hmmm sounds like a good way to keep track.
I have used the branding strip if it had a pattern on it. You know how some brands have a strip of the b side pattern on the branding strip so you can see it without picking up the paper? I have used those strips on cards and in my journal.

I stick my branding strips down on my pages. More paper! Yay! The ones waiting to be used are sitting in a drawer with a bunch more narrow scraps. Their time will come. I think your jar is a fine way to remind yourself of your progress with this never ending memory keeping task of ours. I enjoy your videos I watch replays of your on live recordings on facebook when I happen on them, and they make me smile. I like having people around to scrap with, and your videos are a bit like that for me.

I don't count anything. I use what I like, and I make what I like. Saving all those little strips would drive me crazy. It's nice when my husband and grown children like and appreciate what I do, but I learned a long time ago that my hobbies are for me. Yes, I've made (and continue to make) scrapbooks, cards, and jewelry for others; and I do hope they like and appreciate what I make. Ultimately, though, if it brings ME joy, that's what's important.
That being said, if this works for you, that's what matters. Many people probably appreciate what you do, even though they don't say it. That's very frustrating and disappointing. I know. Keep doing what brings you joy, and know that it brings others joy too. {Hugs}

That is a genius idea! I sometimes use them on an accompanying page if the design fits. I never thought much of them in that way until I took a Vicki Boutin mini album class. She uses them things up like crazy.
It reminds me of a bouquet of flowers for a scrapper!

I sometimes use the ones on patterned paper for banners and sometimes save them with collections. Sometimes I can use the name of a collection for a word strip. The ones on cardstock drive me crazy but I love the idea of counting them! I enjoy your videos, too.

I wish I had another that size but IKEA doesn't sell them anymore. I think I have those same jars - I have 2 sizes, can't quite tell if they're the same or not or which size you're using. I've actually been transitioning to another style of jar in the pantry so if you want another one I could do some cross country mailing... LMK the size? I enjoy your videos although I don't always have time to watch them lately. And doing what makes you happy is all the justification you need, and I've watched enough of your videos to see that this does make you happy And using your paper and turning it into memory albums is the best.

I love this idea! I have been saving printed branding strips to use, but I like the idea of keeping them to keep track of paper used. To be honest I could use the reality check in terms of how much I buy vs use!

I love this idea! I keep them, thinking I'll use them and then I forget I have them. I would really like knowing how many sheets of paper I used in a year. And yes, how much I'm using vs buying would be eye opening I'm sure lol.

Girl, you know I think you’re crazy for keeping branding strips. 😂
Seriously though! Go on with your bad self and using up all that paper! I’m proud of you!

To be honest I could use the reality check in terms of how much I buy vs use! This year I'm going to keep track of how much paper I bring in too. Just on a piece of paper in one of my notebooks. I don't mind buying if I'm going to use it. I just have so dang much to use! I'll be happy if what gets used is more than what comes in. (I hope that makes sense!)

I'm sitting at my dang scrapbook desk with teary eyes! (I'm trying not to be BH though. 😉) If you're going to keep reading, prepare for sappiness and some not scrapbook related personal feelings.
You all have no idea how full my heart feels right now. Seriously. I doubt myself and question myself all the time. Depression and anxiety are constant companions always trying to rear their ugly heads. It's been over a year now of feeling worthless. I take my meds. I see my therapist. I know (intellectually at least) how that's not true...but I still think and feel it every single day. Some personal events last winter plus the pandemic did everything to multiply those feelings a hundredfold.
Today is the first day since Christmas of 2019 that I actually feel like I can clean up in my hallway. I know that sounds stupid...but that's depression for you. I've made a dent in a mess sitting in my hall for two years. I'm giving some of that credit to the Peas and your kind words. (I am taking some of the credit too. That's what my therapist keeps telling me to do at least!) I feel lighter today because of y'all. I felt lighter yesterday too but couldn't figure out how to say that without sounding like a fool. Maybe I still sound like a fool today but I don't care.
I think the words "thank you" are inadequate to express my feelings. They're all I have right now so imagine this is the biggest, deepest, more heartfelt thank you every in the history of the scrapbooking.
Thank you!!!
Thank you for your kind words and comments. It's overwhelming to see it and means so much.
I'm going to go fold laundry because I actually feel like that's something I can manage today. 💜

Your therapist is right. You should take credit for all the steps you're making. All of these feelings need to start from within. That's a difficult task if you don't suffer from depression, so I can only imagine how painfully difficult it must be for you. There's a quote that I read somewhere, but I don't remember who said it. "Surround yourself with people who bring you up, not down, to their level." It's powerful. All the best to you! {More hugs}

I like watching your videos. I like to see your posts on social media. Your scrapping is beautiful and practical at the same time.
And I get a smoke when peas like my work and you do that often.
You don’t sound foolish and you need to give yourself quite a bit of credit for the things you do accomplish rather than beating yourself up over what you haven’t. Trust me, no matter how much you do, there’s always something that doesn’t get done.

lilacgal I started saving my branding strips in a jar yesterday. I just think it will be fun to see how much paper I use in a year. I'm not challenging myself, just curious. I do use some of the branding strips, so if I use it, I'll just put a scrap piece in the jar.

Once I had that data point, I just kept trying to beat my record. I’m competitive even against myself.

I count my LO's when I post them here and keep a tally each year. But I keep only two years at a time, so the only two totals I have are last years and this years running total. I don't keep track of how much product I have used, or how many $$$ that product cost me. Or how many $$$ I have tied up in the unused product all around me. I know that this year I have not bought any new papers, and I have put together more than 50 12x12 pages, and the only dent I can see is in my cardstock drawer. I don't want to know how many times around the world my papers would reach if pains takingly placed side by side... I like to keep track of what manufacturers I use, so I keep the branding strip until I have used the info on it for my page descriptions in Flickr. They tend to pile up by my trimmer until I am forced to clean up that area. Then I decide: does it have a pretty patterned side? Then I keep it, usually tucked in with papers of that collection or in those colours. If not, the branding strip hits the garbage can. I love the branding strip borders that msliz creates, and one of these days I hope to lift one of those pages.

Although not using them as counters, I incorporate branding strips with patterns, quotes, & sometimes collection names into my layouts.
I like your branding strip bouquet. It's a creative way to tally your paper usage, & your yearly totals are impressive. I look forward to hearing how many you collect this calendar year. Happy scrapping!

Very clever! I try to use them - like many have talked about here, and the strips from the 6x6 pads. Line them all up and use that as a card background, or die cut a shape out of them for a backdrop, etc. I like the idea of keeping them all in one place - I tend to keep them with the collection - going to switch to one place Remember to be KIND TO YOURSELF! easier said that done - anxiety and depression are very cruel - I've gone through bad spells of just sitting and looking at papers, supplies, etc. and feeling like I had no creative ideas whatsoever and should just get rid of everything. Love that everyone here is so supportive and positive. I've just recently rejoined the board and so glad I did! I will be checking out your videos this weekend!!! sending much love and many hugs - to all of you!

I have never kept my branding strips or counted how many sheets of paper I use. Hmmm sounds like a good way to keep track. I have used the branding strip if it had a pattern on it. This is me exactly. I also use lots of paper that has no branding strip. Lots of single sided paper has no strip. And with all the layering I like to do I'd really just have to count pages to see what I've used.

I think my fav branding strips are the ones with the quotes, like Kaisercraft's. Those get hoarded and held for just the right place on just the right page. But they stay in the bag with the full sheets until needed.

I try to use them if they don't have holes in them.
I try to destash papers when I finish with them, so those strips get recycled if they don't get used.
