We got nearly .60 of an inch here. It’s awful right now; power lines exploding like Armageddon. Definitely not like Christmas 1998, but this storm will be hurting for a while. I will take a blizzard over an ice storm any day of the year. I’ve been in an accident on the ice and won’t drive on it any more, unless I am stuck somewhere and have no choice. I hope you keep your power. Most of the power lines in my neighborhood have been moved underground over the past 10 years, so we rarely lose power these days unless a transformer blows. They were showing trees knocking out power lines in NC on the news tonight. This has been an awful storm. We didn’t but most people did. Even the power lines underground didn’t fare well. Transformers blowing up like Armageddon here in the RVA area 🤦🏽♀️ We have been pushing dominion to bury lines here for ages. Most are still not. Sigh. Super jealous of NoVa and your miles of underground lines. We had like three transformers on fire at one time last night though! It was slightly apocalyptic, not gonna lie 😂

I’m loving it! I kind of hate our climate so having some winter is heavenly for me. Of course I can say that in part because we don’t really have to be out in it and we have power etc. My trees have not faired well and I’m very sad about that. We managed to get the huge chunk of live oak off our roof but it’s a mess.

Coloradan here wondering what you are all preparing for... what is crazy cold? My brother lives in Texas and hasn't mentioned it at all. This Norwegian was wondering, too 😉 But, I’m guessing it’s unusually cold for Texas and that’s the issue? Below 0 farenheit for weeks here, and business as usual. Schools open, life continues as normal. The electric bill will be anything but normal, though, because the prices have gone up due to the cold weather down in continental Europe. The issue is that we simply don’t have the equipment to deal with it because it happens so rarely. We don’t have snow plows or a lot of de icing trucks. No one has snow tires. It’s extremely rare for people to have winter gear. Most kids would be walking to school in shorts and a hoodie because that’s all they have. Did you see the thread about the 133 car wreck that resulted in 6 deaths and 65 injuries? That’s what happens when we get ice.

There's a twitter discussion with our local weather guy and he says our region has 37 snow plows. Someone else responded that Chicago has over 500. Nobody has tire chains or a freakin' clue how to drive on snow or ice. We just don't have the equipment to deal with these events or the extended cold.
One of our outside faucets already froze--we don't bury our plumbing lines as deep here, so a long freeze can cause real problems.
Our heater went out earlier this week and it took two days to get someone out. It may not have been working right for a while, it just wasn't cold enough to notice. Space heaters are sold out everywhere.

My husband just got back from about 3 minute walk with the dogs. It's been -10 the last few days and we've done 15-25 minute walks. This morning is -24. We got a good 6-8 inches of snow to top it all off. Supposed to be back up in the 50's in a few days, so I don't mind the cold as long as it doesn't stay long.

Oh, we have 5 military bases in town and have lots of people who haven't driven on ice before. The first couple of ice storms here can bring about lots of car accidents. We have a big "hill" on the north side of town that has its own weather system some days. Spring in the north and winter in the south. For most of our storms, we don't get snowplows on the side streets. I was curious about everyone going to the grocery store to get the usual milk and bread. It sounded like people were going to hunker down for many days.

Our electric company is asking us to set our thermostats no higher than 68. And I am FREEZING! But I’m bundled up in about 3 layers and covered in blankets. 68 sounds very reasonable to me—I don’t know why I’m so cold! (Mind you—this week was the first time I’ve had to turn my heat on this winter. I had my AC on just a few weeks ago...)

Super nosey question.... but if ur house doesn't get above 60... how freakin high is your electric bill in the summer??? Its really hard to keep our house cool in the summer... i could not imagine paying to keep it under 60

As others have pointed out, it is extremely unusual for Texas to experience these temperatures. It's not just the Panhandle or North Texas, but the entire state! Our state is just over twice the size of Norway to give you some perspective. We are as ill prepared for extreme winter conditions as Norway and most of continental Europe are for the extreme summer heat waves they have been having the past few years. I was in Norway a couple of years ago during one of those heat waves and it was apparent hotels and buildings are not built with those temperatures in mind. Thoroughly enjoyed my time there though and hope to return some day, as it is a stunningly beautiful country with lovely people. My husband just got back from about 3 minute walk with the dogs. It's been -10 the last few days and we've done 15-25 minute walks. This morning is -24. We got a good 6-8 inches of snow to top it all off. The ice makes an enormous difference. As for your brother, unless he is living in Brownsville I can assure you he is experiencing cold weather! mom - So glad you are able to stay somewhere else until your water is back. Be careful getting there though!

We can’t keep it the same temp all year. We’re on one of those plans where you pay the same amount every month and it evens out because our bill in winter is like $0 and our bill in the summer is like a million dollars 🤣

I don't even look at the monthly costs they print on the bill. If I looked between June and October it would stress me out too much. I just received an email from Reliant asking everyone to conserve electricity on Monday and Tuesday (the worst days for us). This is when I'm happy to have a gas furnace!

Your area has much worse weather and we are nothing but wimps for discussing/commiserating/complaining about our current once in a 100 years event. The purpose of this thread was for Texans to check in with each other, not have all the Northerners come in and play one-upmanship with tales of how much worse you have it and can handle it with ease.

Well that wasn't the point of my posts here. I actually feel bad that you are having weather you aren't prepared for and I'll tell you I could never, ever in a million years handle 110 degree heat. I think I would melt. And I'll tell you I have a lot of family in Arizona. None in Texas. But I see it as a trade off really. You guys are trapped in the house in the summer while we are out having a good time. And you guys normally get to have a nice winter. And I feel bad you're not getting it.

I’m born and raised in San Diego, CA and a good chunk of my childhood friends and some of my family have moved to Texas. They are NOT prepared for this weather at all. It would be like if there were a freak ice storm in Los Angeles, the infrastructure simply isn’t there and it isn’t worth investing in for something that doesn’t happen often.
I feel for all of you dealing with that mess. I only have a winter coat because I went to college in the Midwest, it probably wouldn’t even fit me anymore but I could make due to run to the store.

I didn't really take any of the posts as bad... i know i don't handle cold well... at all...
Im fine with everyone who loves the snow and can sit out in it and enjoy... i will never!!!
But just to say we dont sit in our house all summer... we do the things yall do!! We enjoy the outdoors and most of us are ok with triple digits...
Its definitely a trade off... winter sucks!!! This week more then most!!! Lol
But next week hopefully we will be done with it and by next month we will be back in our flip flops and shorts!!
I never complain about the heat in the summer... i always say give me 110 over 40 any time!!!!
