Y'all's weather is drunk on my lawn. Imma need you to come down and get it.
Sincerely, The Southern Pea who started canceling plans on Friday because of the *possibility* of snow flurries and will likely not be able to venture out until next weekend

Don't worry, I'll be right down. Just remember who helped you out in a few months when your disgusting heat and humidity wander up this way.

So I suppose you don't want to hear that when it was -5 this morning, I ventured out in a hoodie and vest and when I got out of my car said to myself, "What wind chill advisory? It's not that cold out here." In all seriousness, though, I feel you. We had a big storm last week, then got a couple more inches Thursday and Friday. That's not usually a problem, but right now, it's too cold for salt/de-icer to work, so all of our roads are still covered with packed snow. The main roads are much better today than yesterday, and for that reason alone, I will never gripe about paying my county every cent of tax it's owed, just to keep the snowplow fleet in shape. Stay warm and stay safe, everyone.

Stay warm and stay safe, everyone. I'm in Southern California. I call it 'winter' when the temp drops below 70 đ I cannot imagine being out in below zero temps with only a hoodie on. I break out the shearling boots and winter coat when it's 65 degrees out!

DH went to Kroger yesterday to pick a prescription for my Dad and he said the store looked like people were Covid shopping.
Usually it is only milk, bread and toilet paper that is cleared out. If you didn't already know, it is in our Southern DNA to want French toast whenever winter weather is predicted. And we always stick up on the tp.
In all seriousness, this place will be almost shut down until it clears back up. We don't have snow plows and salt trucks concentrate on the interstates and overpasses. So most of the time even once the main roads actually clear it is treacherous just getting out of the neighborhood.
I am predicting we won't have garbage pickup this week and depending on how much snow/ice we might not get mail on Tuesday.
Anyone wanting warm weather is welcome to visit in August when we have high heat and humidity and the heat index is around 107 and when you go outside you are immediately drenched in sweat, you hair goes flat and it feels like you are trying to breathe through a wet wool blanket.
At least with cold weather you can keep putting layers on to get warm. With the heat there is only so much you can take off before it becomes indecent. And y'all have never had to deal with boob or sock money.
I am hunkered down for the duration with the peas to keep me entertained. Please don't disappoint!

Having lived I. Mississippi for some fifteen years, this is so true! Also true for Tennessee and most of the other southern states.
From Ole Miss site
Public service announcement đđ
You transplants that are new to the Sip are about to experience âMississippi Winterâ. This is 6 or 7 days of cold, maybe some ice and snow. The weatherman will threaten snow. It may snow, it may not and if the weatherman says 2 inches it could be 10 or it could be 1/2â. It doesnât matter how much snow it is, weâll all freak out because we donât see snow often.
The threat of snow (or ice) from the weatherman is your prompt to head to the grocery store and buy milk, eggs and bread. It doesnât matter if you need these items. Itâs just what we do. Everyone in town will be there.
Youâll also need to make a mad dash for faucet covers and finding them and getting out of the store will be like an episode of the hunger games.
Donât look for a sled. You wonât find one. In the rare chance we get enough ice or snow to sled grab some cardboard or a trash can lid and go find the nearest hill. Yes, we know itâs not a mountain. You live in the hills, just go with it. Youâll be alarmed by the fact that youâre âsleddingâ towards a bar ditch, fence or maybe into a farm to market road. Just go with it. Youâll be fine.
We donât have equipment to handle the winter and weather. The roads will be a mess and even though the state has been telling you for a week theyâre ready, theyâre not and it wonât work. Just stay home if you can and if you canât just come to terms with the fact that nobody here knows how to drive in snow and ice.
Whatever you do, DO NOT talk about snow tires.
If you happen to slide off the road or get stuck, turn your flashers on, take a deep breath and wait. Two guys in a four wheel drive truck will be along in no time to offer assistance. Donât try to help them, they live for this stuff, and will do what they can to get you back on the road. If either one of them screams âhey yâall watch thisâ just get back and get your phone out and start recording, youâll probably have a viral video. Also of note, when they offer you beer and deer sticks, donât be rude, take them and smile.
No matter what you do, donât talk about how they did it back home in any of these scenarios. Nobody cares. You live in the Sip now, Mississippians know they live in the greatest state in the country and itâs our way or the highway.
When we act like weâre going to die and start to complain about the 7 days of winter just shut up, weâre serious and we donât care how much you love it. We donât.
Youâll be back in shorts and flip flops in a week to ten days and itâll be nice until right around Easter.
The âsecond winterâ will be 2 or 3 days and will hit right around Easter, usually the week before or the week after. This will hit right around the time you plant flowers and a garden. We know youâre not from around here when we see youâve planted flowers before Easter and before the âsecond winterâ has hit.
This is why all the people at the nursery donât sound like us when youâre shopping for plants. We know better.
During second winter itâll go from 70 to 25 and youâll experience all four seasons in one day. This too shall pass, get used to it and when second winter is over you can enjoy the 3-4 weeks of âspringâ before summer gets here and itâll be melt your face off hot until sometime around Halloween.

When it gets hot and humid, you can always find me near an air conditioner vent.

I think itâs time for the southern states to start budgeting for salt trucks! In the meantime, Iâll send you a shovel and a bag of salt:)

I can't wait for spring and summer! My favorite times of year! We have had so much snow in southwest PA in Dec. and Feb. and I'm so tired of scraping the snow off my van!

We should teach the southern peas that cheap kitty litter gives traction on snow and ice. Good on sidewalks too, but it is messy going into the house, it is only clay.

I just messaged my daughter before I saw this. Told her I was glad I had an extra jug of cat litter so I could 'sand' the front porch and a path on the back patio if needed (the path would be for the dog to do his business and run back in).

We are expecting 8-12 inches of snow from 7pm tonight to 7pm tomorrow night. My husband is actually making our youngest French toast right now for breakfast. The only thing that came from the store is the bread though. Our chickens give us eggs and we buy milk from the farm a mile down the road.

Sincerely, The Southern Pea who started canceling plans on Friday because of the *possibility* of snow flurries and will likely not be able to venture out until next weekend I hate to tell you, but yâall have been stealing all our moisture for much longer than that. đ Weâre in drought for the last 8 months where I live because of it. Weâve probably had 15 inches total over winter when we average 40-100 inches. All the moisture is staying south this year. Sorry youâre stuck with it now. There is no RSVP on Mother Nature. đ€Ș Love, a dry (but still extremely cold) Northern Pea. đ„¶
