I made a purchase on Etsy of six pairs of earrings from a singe seller. The earrings are vegan leather and silver findings. They did not cost a high dollar amount, but I thought they were pricey for what they were. Most of the sets were supposed to be gifts for my nieces.
They arrived today and they REEK of smoke. Like I could not even bring them into my house. They are currently sitting on a table outside in my backyard. If the smell doesn’t go away (and I don’t have high hopes), I can’t wear them and I certainly can’t gift them.
I decided to leave honest reviews and move on. There was one review that mentioned a smoke smell, but since it was only one of many I thought maybe that person’s mail carrier was to blame. I wish more of the reviews had mentioned the smell, so I left what I thought was a nice review and mentioned the smell. I said that the earring were cute, well made, and shipped quickly, but that they smelled very, very strongly of cigarette smoke. I gave a low number of stars.
The seller messaged me and said she would refund me if I delete or change my review. I feel like she’s done this to other people and that’s why only one review mentions the smell.
So WWYD?

I don't know what I would do, but man would I appreciate the honesty if I was thinking about buying from this person.
Zero desire to smell smoke

I wonder what is Etsy's policy on something like this.

I certainly would ask for a refund and I did once with some planner stickers because they reeked of a chemical smell. I messaged her instead of writing a review. I think it’s kind of irresponsible of her to tell you she would refund you if you took the review down. It smells like a bribe. I just wonder if you are not absolutely correct in that this is happened before and that’s why there’s no other reviews mentioning the smell of cigarette smoke.
I think that you need to ask for your money back and not touch the review until that’s done. Maybe you could add that she refunded you because of the smell. I guess it just depends if you are OK with being out that money if the smell doesn’t go away.

I would leave your review. If I was a buyer, I would want to know.
Or, contact etsy and see what they say! Tell them what she wanted you to do.
You could try putting them in a bag with a dryer sheet. Or try putting them in the freezer.

I wouldn't delete my honest review. If she had offered an apology and a refund, no strings attached/no mention of reviews, I would consider editing my review once the refund cleared. And even then, I'd keep my original text, but just add on to say the seller reached out to make it right. (I think you can do that at etsy.)
But the minute that making it right is contingent upon me editing an honest review, no deal.
If she had disclosed the fact that hers is a smoking household, you would not have purchased and she would not have gotten a low rating.

I'd contact Etsy - there has to be a policy on deleting a review for a refund, right?! 🤯

i think the smoke smell will probably dissipate with one of the above methods.
i think that is shitty for her to pay you to take down the review.

I too would contact Etsy since her refund is contingent on removal of your honest review.

Did you reach out to the seller before leaving the review? If so and received no response to the request, I'd let it stand. If not, I'd accept the refund and update the review with the resolution (I'm not sure if this is something that can be done).

The issue is, who goes first? I have had companies ask me would I remove my honest reviews on Amazon if they refund me, but they won’t refund me first. Yeah right.
I’m not removing an honest & truthful review anyway, if I’m writing a review I’m either extra happy with the product or extra unhappy with it to be motivated enough to to leave a review. I don’t really bother with a review if everything is just fine. If I’ve left a negative review, the seller has already been dishonest for me to take the time to write the review so even if I were able to be bought I’d never remove the review first.
Anyway. I’d appreciate the honest review since I hate smoke smelling items and it’s one of the toughest smells to remove.

I'd reach out to Etsy about it, and I'd strongly consider updating my review (or adding another if you can't update/edit) to say that you were offered a refund if you'd delete your honest review. That ought to let folks know the smoke smell wasn't just once or twice.

I would not change my review in exchange for a refund. If there's an option (and I don't know because I've never had a sale go bad like this), I would contact Etsy directly and see if they can force a refund despite the review. But for something like this, I think people ought to know.

I think the first step should have been to message the seller regarding the odor issue and see what remedies she offered.
But at this point, she’s blatantly bribing you for a good review. I’d leave it as is.

Not sure what to recommend on the Etsy seller comment.
BUT get some ZorbX spray from Walgreens or Ace Hardware or Sam's Club - it works WONDERS on smoke smell.

I once gave a scathing review on Google about a car repair shop that was part of a dealership. A manager contacted me and said they would make it right if I would edit my review. I agreed because it was a lot of money AND I only had to edit my review, I did not need to remove my review. So, I did sorta like we do on here with updates and did an edit and said ****UPDATE and gave the info about but updated my stars to reflect that I was happy about the outcome.

i would allow her to refund the items, ship them back if she wanted. then i would change my review to 4 or 5 stars but still leave the wording as it is, just add that the seller resolved the issue to your satisfaction. then, she's getting an honest review (high stars because she did make it right by refunding) and you are also being honest with they were nice, but smelled like smoke.

i read reviews, esp on etsy, for reasons just like this. I am annoyed for you that the seller is skewing her reviews! I would contact etsy first for real and I wouldn't take down your review. I may add an update so people are aware.

I would leave the review. I bought something on Amazon last year that was not as advertised—it was a puzzle that was printed on cheap paper, not the heavy cardboard stated and that is typical for puzzles. I left a review stating such, and asked seller for a refund. Seller said he would refund if I deleted the bad review. I told him I would edit my review when the refund was received. When I received the refund, I edited my review to state that the seller refunded my money since I was not happy as the product was not as described. I have received several emails from the seller since, asking me to delete my review since they are trying to build their business. I will not, since as a buyer I would prefer an honest review.

I think I would edit my review to state that the seller offered to refund my money if I revoked my review about the smoke smell...
I grew up in a house with smokers. I did not smell that awful smoke smell. I think I was nose blind to it. I just didn't even smell it anymore. But I distinctly remember spending the night at a friends house and opening up my bag to get something out and smelling that smell. I was probably 12, but I felt SO embarrassed. I realized this is what I smelled like all the time. My mom was such a clean person - our house was always spotless, and she was always 'airing' out the house. So I guess it could have been worse, but that was one of the big factors of me never ever wanting to smoke.
Same goes for pets. I can smell them the minute I walk into someone's house. Some are not that noticeable, and some -whew - man!
So if the seller does not state "Pet Free and Smoke Free" - I ask. If they have them, I don't buy from them. I've gotten too many smelly and hairy packages.

This is 100% why I do not trust reviews any more. I buy supplements and vitamins online - 9/10 times there are cards inside that you can get free bottles by leaving positive reviews.
