Has anyone successfully resuscitated washi tape that shreds when you try to get it off the roll? I figured I would try and use some of the 40ish rolls I have for a project, but I can't even get it off the roll. Got colorful little shards all over my shirt, but not off the roll. I hate to throw so much out, but I know things are prone to drying out in radiator heat.

I could be dreaming...but I thought I saw somewhere to microwave them for like 10 seconds or something?? IDK, maybe worth a try. lol
Okay- after a google search I see it says to microwave painters or masking tape anywhere 10-30 seconds. So someone probably has tried it for washi. I would give it a try!

Maybe you could get something with a thin, flat, solid edge (a piece of acetate, maybe-- I was thinking credit or gift card, but thinner) that you could work it under the tape edge and use it to slowly peel it back all at once? You'll have to use new adhesive, probably, but maybe that will keep it from shredding.

I have only had a couple of rolls do that and to be honest I just toss them. 40 rolls is a lot though. I'm sorry.

I think I've heard that if you can get down a bit further into the roll that it might be better. whether by shredding your way through the top layers or perhaps cutting into it a bit to reach an inner layer. Good quality washi shouldn't do that. I have some that's at least a decade old that still peels and sticks like normal. But I also have some newer stuff that has gone bad very quickly, shredding or losing it's stick. Climate may play a role. But generally washi is a use-it-or-lose-it type of supply. Sorry

I was trying to do that with this label peeler I have - these things work great for peeling price tags off things, even the Marshalls ones that break into triangles. We used them at Waldenbooks back in the day to switch out the triangle percentage off labels every week. Sorry I actually had DH take a box cutter to it to remove layers and it even broke up at least halfway through the roll The three rolls I tried were from AC Moore and Recollections. I can get the Target Dollar Spot ones to peel, but it barely sticks... I've been using them for reinforcing some post it notes. Our ceiling fans make them flop around.

I had the same issue last weekend - was able to finally get it rolling as one piece, using my cricut spatula and burnishing tool. I will say, once I got off what I needed, I folded over the end so I had a "tab" to pull from for the next go round. I think I get in trouble when I let it stick back down - and go through the same problem trying to get it "rolling" the next time I need it. Love all the ideas here - thanks everyone! definitely going to try the microwave too!

I have had a few cheap ones do that and I have just thrown them out, however I have many "special ones" that I would battle with if they did that. I also fold over the edge after every use so that it is easier to pull when I use them next, so far I haven't any issues since I started doing that however could also come down to a quality thing too.
I actually have more problems with sticky residue being left behind than I do with the shredding and sticking. I live in a sub tropical often hot and humid location and I have always wondered if that is something that affects the glue.

I've had success with some of the suggestions mentioned. First I score lightly across the roll and discard the top layers. Usually the tape is fine underneath, but if it's still no good I microwave it for 10-15 seconds. It works about 75 percent of the time.

I am working my way through about 100 rolls now ~
