Our craft club is taking a single mom and her two girls under our wing this Christmas and I have signed up to buy winter coats. One girl is 10 and wears a size medium in womens and the other little girl is 5 and wears a size 7 girls. As a mom of a boy, I really have no idea what is "in" for girls coats. I want them to be stylish, and I'm afraid I might pick dowdy. Can you show me some examples of what I should be looking for?
Thanks!

I agree with what kristi521 said. Old Navy was having a really good outerwear sale a couple of weeks ago and I bought the coat that she posted for my 9-year-old daughter, as well as this one: ON Girls Coat

Thanks! I love that second coat but I would have never picked that shiny, puffy coat! Girls like those? I didn't think of Old Navy, that's a great place to go!

My DD likes both - I ordered online and originally planned to let her pick which of the two she preferred and was going to send back the other. Her favorite is the one I posted - with the fur-trimmed hood (it also comes in olive which I prefer but she likes the grey) - but I got such a good deal on the other one that I kept it so she'll have a backup as she inevitably will leave one at school or fall in a mud puddle (she is her mother's daughter). She's gotten several compliments on the one with the fur-trimmed hood. But I've noticed that lots of other girls at school are wearing coats similar to the puffy one.

I was going to suggest a shiny puffer coat too. You could also check Target.

I hear from an ON friend that the entire store will be 50% off on Black Friday. You could get them all coats, gloves, scarves and hats for a great price if you're up to the crowds.

I think given the situation, something that is not too trendy and can last a few years, while possibly being passed down to the younger one is the way to go. A solid color and classic style is probably going to last many years with good care. Don't buy all the same style in the event that the older one gives the coat to the younger one. Maybe you can do some fun colored scarves? I bet some of the Peas will even knit one for you. ; )

I would buy a classic cut rather than a trendy coat.

I would buy a classic cut rather than a trendy coat. How come? I mean, I get why you'd buy that for yourself, but a 10 year old will outgrow it in time for the next trend.

I agree, and kids are hard on coats. I couldn't believe the wear and tear that my kids put their coats through in just one winter. Plus its a gift. I'm sure they are always having to be practical, when it's something like this let the kids be "cool" for crying out loud. That stuff matters to them, and why not?

I don't necessarily think a classic cut is "not fun" or "uncool." Trendy is fine also. I stated my prefrence, that's all, so I don't get the outrage, ladies. None of us know whether these girls want trendy or a more tailored look, so we are all just stating our opinion.

I was simply wondering why your opinion was what it was.

I absolutely WOULD get them something fun and trendy... because the probably hardly ever get that. When money is tight, things need to be practical. So go with something that serves the purpose of keeping them warm, but is also trendy. They will probably be thrilled.
I don't know many 10 and 5 year olds who are interested in "classic" and "tailored" things. They want what their friends have, often like bright color, frequently enjoy shine/sparkle, and in general want to be little girls.

Also not outraged. That's a bizarre assumption.

Where do you live in general terms? The coat I would pick for here is not the same coat I might pick for elsewhere. Also do you want the thick snow coat that can be worn when really cold or when playing in snow or would you rather get something that they can put a hoodie undER to make a little warmer or could wear when it was 40-50° out?

All the girls at school are wearing the shiny puffer coats. Some with fur trimmed hoods, some not. And yes, kids trash their coats. I might get two seasons out of an Old Navy coat. Columbia, which is exponentially more, I can pass down.

Thanks for your help! I am going with the Puffer coats even though I don't like them! I want them to go back to school after the holidays feeling amazing and stylish. My friend is getting scarves, gloves and hats to match!
Their mother is usually able to support them, keep a roof over their head, clothes and food in the house but had a car accident about a month ago and has been unable to work. She is starting physical therapy soon and hopes to be back to work as soon as possible. We want this Christmas to be one they will never forget! We're buying a tree and everything! I am more excited with their Christmas than I am with my own!

The thought of them going back to school "amazing and stylish" - . Thank you for this awesome reminder of what the season is really all about.
