I already pay for Access so this doesn't affect me however it will affect others.
Cricut made their announcement of improvements to Design Space. Like finally we are getting an Offset feature!
However along with that is if you are not an Access member (monthly or yearly fee to use the library and get discounts from buying off their store site) you will be limited to uploading images to 20 a month. For some Design Space has been a real PIA. I mostly use my tablet and haven't updated DS in awhile. I now only use my Computer when I have to. So there are people who create their own designs exclusively outside of DS, up load to DS and use their machine to cut. From the groups I am in, there are many angry crafters over this. They feel like their machine is now being held hostage especially if they use their Circut machine for a business with their own designs. There is also a huge amount of new Cricut crafters because of the pandemic. Looking for something to do or starting a business. They bought their machines thinking the could upload as much as they wanted.
Frankly I think we should have a WORKING DS program before anything like this happens. The change is being rolled out with an update and some have already experienced hitting that 20 upload a month. You can't upload an image with DS offline either. You can still cut as much as you like.
What do you crafters think of this?

My DH mentioned this to me because he saw it on twitter. I don't have Cricut but it made me very happy I have a Scan n Cut instead. It feels like a bait and switch to me. I'd be upset to have to do yet another subscription and I didn't know that before I bought the machine. Feels really shady.

I would not be happy! I just recently purchased 2 silhouette machines and cut all the time. I feel sorry for all the Cricut users. The limitations would be not good for what I do currently with my silhouette.

I came across a few who had just bought the machine and are are sending it back. They certainly feel it's like a bait and switch because that's not what was advertised.

We have been discussing this over in the Cricut petition thread. Not happy about it. It absolutely is a bait and switch. I signed the petition - I'm amazed how many signatures it has now!

I signed the petition. I’m not happy about the limitations and also disappointed in the usability of DS. I should have asked for a Silhouette for Christmas instead of the Cricut I got. That’s just shady of Provo Craft.

I have two Cricuts, 1 older Expression and one Cake that I use paper in lol. This would make me perhaps jump ship to the Cameo when my machines bite the dust.

Dear Cricut Members, One of our core values is community — we’re listening, and we took your feedback to heart. The foundation of our Cricut community is one of integrity, respect, and trust. It is clear that, in this instance, we did not understand the full impact of our recent decision on our current members and their machines. We apologize. Here’s how we'll move forward. We will continue to allow an unlimited number of personal image and pattern uploads for members with a Cricut account registered and activated with a cutting machine before December 31, 2021. This benefit will continue for the lifetime of your use of these machines. Machine Resales or Transfers We welcome new members to the Cricut community whether they purchase a new or pre-owned machine. If a machine is resold or transferred to a new user, the new user must set up their own Cricut account. As long as the new user creates their account and connects the machine to their account before December 31, 2021, we will grant the benefit of an unlimited number of uploads to the new user for the lifetime of their use of the machine. Schools and Education Maker Spaces We understand that teachers, schools, and other education maker spaces have different needs for ongoing user account creation. While we don’t have anything to share right now — and nothing will change before December 31, 2021 — we are looking at ways to address these ongoing needs and their relation to image uploads. Future We will continue to explore affordable ways for our future users who register machines after December 31, 2021 to allow an unlimited number of personal image and pattern uploads. Of course, paid Cricut Access subscribers will continue to enjoy an unlimited number of uploads along with the other subscriber benefits. We will also continue to invest in our content, software, and value for all our members. ashish arora (Cricut ceo)

Reads like it was cranked out of the PR department. Someone had an 'oh shit' moment, realized that maybe this was a little too far of a stretch.
Just means they'll find another way to screw over their current customer base and future customers that's less blatant. Honestly it astonishes me that they still have customers at all, given Provo Craft's track record.
There was an easy solution - stop using a closed ecosystem with internet required software.

It would not have affected me, but I knew when I read about it that a lot of Etsy business owners would be livid, not to mention teachers.
At least they backed off this stupidity due to customer outrage.
I doubt they will ever offer customers the option to use their machines offline. Or if they do, customers will have to buy a new machine to get it, perhaps in 2022, and with new software.

The funny part was that the CEO was on vacation when this all went down. Crafters were sending him emails and got the generic out of office due to vacation. So I'm not sure he actually had anything to do with this email.

You still have to log in first while being online. To log out you have to be online. I do this with my laptop because it's kind of slow. Just download what I need. I use my tablet more now.
