Jenna Ryan, the Dallas-area realtor who flew to Washington on a private plane before participating in the Jan. 6 insurrection, filmed herself on the steps of the Capitol declaring that she was "tired of paying taxes to crooks."However, in a new court filing, federal prosecutors allege that Ryan has "a history of tax delinquency," according to Politico reporter Kyle Cheney. "Moreover, the defendant has not consistently paid her taxes, with a history of federal and state tax liens from 2013 and 2016 that caused a deficiency of more than $35,000 in back taxes that was not resolved until April 2021," prosecutors wrote in a sentencing memo for Ryan. "Despite her own history of tax delinquency, the defendant recorded herself ... on the Captiol steps declaring that she was 'tired of paying taxes' to 'crooks.'" Ryan, who pleaded guilty in August to a misdemeanor charge of parading, demonstrating or picketing, is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 4. Prosecutors are asking U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper to sentence Ryan to 60 days in jail, even though other Capitol rioters who've pleaded guilty to the same offense have been sentenced to probation. They say the stiffer sentence is warranted in part because Ryan boasted on Twitter in March that she was "definitely not going to jail."
"Sorry I have blonde hair white skin a great job a great future and I'm not going to jail. Sorry to rain on your hater parade. I did nothing wrong," Ryan wrote. In their sentencing memo, prosecutors wrote, "Perhaps the most compelling need for specific deterrence arises from the defendant's misguided belief that she is above the law, or at least insulated from incarceration."The Washington Post first reported on Ryan's tax woes in February, in a story about how nearly 60 percent of Capitol rioters showed signs of prior money troubles. "Despite her outward signs of success, Ryan had struggled financially for years," the Post reported. "She was still paying off a $37,000 lien for unpaid federal taxes when she was arrested. On Friday, POLITICO reported that Michael Riley, the Capitol Police officer facing charges for his alleged role in obstructing the investigation of the January 6 Capitol riot, has resigned from the force. "Riley, who was suspended after federal prosecutors indicted him earlier this month, allegedly urged a participant in the Capitol breach — just days after the attack — to delete incriminating social media posts. He later deleted his own messages with the alleged rioter, who was arrested in January, about two weeks after Jan. 6," reported Kyle Cheney. "Riley was arrested on Oct. 15 and suspended. He has pleaded not guilty to the two counts of obstruction. Riley's legal team, from the D.C. firm Silverman, Thompson, Slutkin & White, confirmed his resignation and indicated he plans to fight the charges." "In the role of Judas in the traveling Broadway show “Jesus Christ Superstar,” James Beeks was about to see his onstage career take off. Beeks, whose stage name is James T. Justis, was lauded for his role as the disciple who betrayed Jesus. But it was his side job as a Michael Jackson impersonator that unintentionally brought about a twist in his story that even Andrew Lloyd Webber might have struggled to imagine: Authorities accuse Beeks of being in the pro-Trump mob that breached the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6 riot after joining the Oath Keepers, a far-right extremist group. And his “Bad” jacket helped prosecutors identify him, they say. Beeks, 49, was arrested Tuesday and charged with obstruction of Congress, a felony, and a misdemeanor count of unlawfully entering a restricted building or grounds, according to the Justice Department. He was apprehended in Milwaukee, where “Jesus Christ Superstar” began a stretch of shows this week.
