First of all, I apologize for all the threads I've been starting. My family won't let me do anything around the house so I have lots of free time around here.
Since having been diagnosed with melanoma, it's been stressed to stay out of the sun of at all possible and to apply lots of sunscreen if I can't. I love the ocean/beach... so I'll be in the sun some.
Recommendations for sunscreen? I prefer the non-spray kind as I always seem to miss spots. I'd prefer something light but more importantly works well.

Consider covering as much as possible.
We go to the beach at least 3 times a year and I wear long sleeve swim shirts, swim pants, a neck gaiter, and a hat.
Land’s End has some great swim options for covering up.
And no, I’m not hot.
I find that I’m cooler when the sun isn’t baking my skin.

Covering gets you more than sunscreen. Use mineral sunscreen (physical barrier) when possible rather than chemical

I use Neutrogena Beach Defense, and I also really like Sun Bum sunscreen. Both feel lightweight on and smell really nice, too.

Unless you wear a full on face mask and gloves, you still need sunscreen.
I’m a fan of Neutragena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch. I’m a redhead with very fair skin and I’ve had very good luck with it. I use 70 SPF and don’t burn as long as I reapply if I sweat or swim. I like that it doesn’t feel greasy; it feels like baby powder on your skin.

I'll definitely be covering up somewhat. I'm always be wearing a sun hat with sunscreen on my face. And I rarely sit fully in the sun, even at the beach. I'm actually going to be looking at some sort of beach tent to sit my chair in so I can get mostly out of the sun when needed.

Elta MD is a great sunscreen, esp. for your face. Amazon sells it. It’s what my dermatologist recommends. I use Neutrogena Dry Touch on my arms. Do you wear a hat if you are out in the sun for awhile? When I do yard work, I use sunscreen and a hat.

A common one is zinc oxide. Think the old school white across the nose, although that's not how they are anymore. Australian Gold makes great ones.

My hair is super thin on top and my head burns if I don't wear a hat. We spent a fair amount of time outside watching the girls play soccer and I usually wear a baseball hat. In the last year or so, I've ended up buying several sunhats that cover my face better.

They have neck gators that are made of fabric with sun protection. They can be worn in a variety of ways, are thin, and really cool you down if you get them wet. Dh wears them for mountain biking and it doesn't bother him at all.
It might afford you an extra layer of protection when you are watching the kids sports.

I use the Cancer Council of Australia sunscreen. Obviously not an option for you, but do you have a similar organisation? Or maybe your surgeon / doctor could recommend one?

I like the ones that have a little skirt over them. Lands End makes some rash guard fit swim shirts and some looser ones.

I have an appt with him a week from Tuesday so I do plan on asking what he recommends. But I also like to know what people think that have actually used the products.

We always rent an umbrella when we go to the beach. My family makes fun of me because I wear a big hat and a large t-shirt and a bathing suit with a skirt to cover the tops of my legs. I put on lotion sunscreen then spray on top. always wear sunglasses. The umbrella really helps!

Talk to your doctor.
I grew up and live in South Florida and have very fair skin. I am in the habit of wearing a rash guard, board shorts and use Aveeno and Nutrogena sun screen. Also, don't forget to use lip sun screen. I think the key is to avoid long periods of sun exposure. Bring or find shade and be aware of the reflection from the water.
I have several friends that have had Melanoma and are all clear now. Hope you feel better soon.

If you have a Trader Joe’s by you that have the zinc oxide sunscreen spray cans for $9.99. Best price I ever see on it. I just bought two cans for myself for this coming summer. They also have the little stick of it that’s good for smaller spots. I buy that and use it to put on my surgery scars.

I do wear one board shorts and we're going to invest in one of those little huts that I can put my chair in. For me being at the beach isn't about getting a tan or being in the sun. I love sand beneath my toes, the breeze... just the whole atmosphere. I'm extremely fair skinned and as a kid in the Midwest in the 80s, sunscreen wasn't a thing. I was sunburned so many times as a kid - so badly in several cases that I blistered. So lots of damage done before I ever hit adulthood. In the last 10-15 years I've been much more diligent about sunscreen and not getting burned. I did learn the hard way about not having spf chapstick though. Spent a few hours at a lake and the reflection from the water sunburned my lips. Two weeks of cutting all my food up into teeny bite size pieces... fat, puffy lips that hurt... haven't done that since. Every spring I buy 2 or 3 different types of sunscreen for lips to find the one I like the best.

By far my favorite sunscreen is the Obagi physical sunscreen. And a good sun hat.

brandy327 also look into the long sleeve rash guard shirts for beach and pool. They’re uv fabrics so don’t have to worry about sunscreen on the top at least. I have a fair ginger friend and those were a life saver for her when they became popular. We do lots of outdoor water stuff in the summers her and before those no joke she would wear long sleeve thermals at the lake and River all day.

My dermatologist recommends Elta MD UV Clear Broad Spectrum SPF 46 sunscreen for the face. It's good for sensitive and acne prone skin as well. For the body she recommends the Elta MD broad spectrum SPF 50. Cover as much as possible, wear a hat or visor, and make sure your sunglasses offer UVA and UVB protection. Look for a label that says “100% protection against both UVA and UVB” or “100% protection against UV 400.” Also, sunglasses should even be worn on cloudy days to protect your eyes/skin from the rays.

I use two different types from Japan. I found about them on a skin care forum on Reddit. Biore Aqua Riche Essense and Biore Perfect Milk. Best thing about them is they are non greasy and no bad smell. I order through Amazon. I've been using them for years.

I got to the point that I would use a stick sunscreen on my lips because it didn't taste as bad. Which is crazy! I have tried so many kinds too. Any recommendations would be great!

I have fair skin. I use Blue Lizard. When in the sun, I wear a rashguard, then I apply sunblock to all parts not covered. The trick is really to reapply frequently, every 30-45 minutes depending on the UV index and if I'm swimming or in the shade.
ETA - don't stock up on sunblock, it expires

I picked up two cans of Bare Republic mineral spray on sunscreen the other day as I’m headed to the beach for a week. I’ll let you know how I like it after I try it a few days.

After reading this, I just ordered a Tizo SPF 45 chapstick from Amazon. I am very fair, and skin cancer runs in my family. So I am careful(some might say obsessed😁) with sunscreen. I never leave the house without it.
