My oldest really needs to get a job. Over the last few years we have talked about it but he has always been a little reluctant. I think he is waiting for some opportunity to come to him and isn’t putting himself out there. He is in sports as well so when football or baseball season is on, it is more difficult for him to work so then we kind of let it go for awhile but now he really needs money to take to college.
Last summer he and the 15 year old started working at a local event center washing dishes. Our neighbor works there as well so they heard about it from him. But that was only weekends (which was fine during sports season) and of course there have been several months where there were no events.
He applied for a city job doing landscaping but just told us that they told him a few weeks ago that they were not hiring now. But he hasn’t applied anywhere else. It is driving me crazy! I always had a job whether it was babysitting, detasseling corn in the summer, fast food, etc. I originally thought his reluctance was just being comfortable not working but the more I look at his history, I think it might be that he is scared to put himself out there? Anyway, now here we are in May and he still doesn’t have a job for the summer. When interviewing, what does he say if they ask him if he is going to work there in the fall? Any other tips for helping him get a job now? Would be great if it was somewhere he could transfer to a different location when he goes to college but at this point I just want him to he working.

idk where you live, but if you have a texas roadhouse, my daughter worked there for three years and it was great for her. i wouldn't have thought she would be great at that, but she was and in the end it helped her get in to the nursing school that she wanted. or he can get a job at a place they have in his college town so he can transfer there when he goes to college.

Target pays really well here. So do the state control liquor stores (you have to be 18 to work there).

This sounds like my DD. Since you mentioned detasseling, I'm assuming that you live in the midwest (I'm in Iowa). LOL Anyway, HyVee is a great place to work for summer/college kids. My DD works at the one in her college town (St. Joe, Mo), and lets the manager here know when she will be home so she can pick up a few hours during her school breaks. She started as "Courtesy" and is a Cashier now. I like using her discount.

You tell him to tell the truth. Businesses need to know if they are hiring someone only for them to leave in two months. I would suggest he start mowing lawns for himself or for a landscape type of place. Summer is their busy time and they needs lots of help, even if they arent staying forever.

can he lifeguard? Work at a summer camp? A day camp? He hasn’t had lifeguard training, but even if he had, there aren’t many lifeguards here. I grew up in Iowa and every town, no matter how small, had a city pool. Here in MN it is rare. Looking into other landscaping jobs is a good idea since that would be seasonal anyway.

What about umpiring baseball, reffing soccer, reffing football, timekeeping hockey, grocery store carry out, construction clean up crew, bowling alley pin monkey or birthday party hostess, day camp counselor - we have a lot of sports day camps, my ds did that after grade 9 and 10.

Could he mow lawns or do yard work? Babysit for a family in the area with kids who are a little too old for daycare but a little too young to be home alone all day? How about working as a caddy at a golf course or a detailer at a car wash? Dog walker?
There are always so many postings for temporary jobs on our Nextdoor site. If I had a high schooler wanting casual or seasonal work that’s where I would tell them to look.

My 15 year old got a job for the summer as a day camp counselor. Another idea is the YMCA which if you have one close to you and one close to his college could possibly turn into a job not just for the summer but the school year too.

Businesses are very used to kids only working for the summer so that shouldn’t be a concern as long as he’s upfront about it. Since he’s into sports can he ref the games of younger kids? Soccer referees make pretty good money and in my area it’s almost all high schoolers (a few adults but not many).
Are you expecting him to help pay for college, or just save spending money? If he needs to pay a portion it might help to have a goal. For example, tell him he needs to contribute $1500 by Aug 1st and ge needs to figure out how to do that. With my dd she was just saving money for non-essentials, like pizza or make up, so she didn’t seem to have as much motivation and said she just wouldn’t order pizza. Once we set a clear goal it seemed to jump start her motivation.

My teens have found their jobs by word of mouth. They have a friend working at xyz who tells them they're hiring. Then they get hired mostly based on the recommendation, I think.
Hotels often need cleaning help, especially in the summer when people travel more. Where I live, it doesn't hurt to just stop into local businesses and see if they're hiring.

It's hard! Places here don't want to hire unless you're planning on staying longer than just summer, and getting anything if you're under 18 is an extra challenge.
My 21-year old has always struggled to find something. This summer she's back at the grocery store, cutting fruits and vegetables. They took her on a couple of summers ago and they really liked her so when she asked if she could work this summer, they were all about it.
The only jobs really available for younger students are fast food (where it really helps to speak Spanish here--for customers, but mostly for interacting with co-workers), the pool (you can be an attendant and clean the pool deck and bathrooms-- my dd did this for one summer), or local park district summer camps. Dairy Queen might be a good option.
She's tried getting jobs at retail stores and Trader Joe's, and they were specifically not interested in hiring just for the summer.

My DD is about to work her 3rd summer at Lowe's. They are hiring here- as in walk in, interview, and start working. They need seasonal help due to yard work, etc that happens in spring and summer.

I would think there would be TONS of jobs in your area. He just has to go out and look and apply. Have you told him, this is your college money,or his spending money for the next yr?
My girls over the yrs in HS before college and summers worked Burger king, a small local ice cream store, housekeeping at a resort, counselor at a camp ,housekeeping at a camp, Golf course front desk and maintence, hotel housekeeping, and a supper club waitress.

My kids both worked as counselors at summer camps when they were in high school, and one year my dd got a job at Coldstone Creamery. They were always hiring extra staff in the summer because it was so busy, and didn't mind that kids would only work the summer.
Restaurants in our area are really scrambling for workers, especially seasonally since they are expecting a big boom in business this summer...

Last summer, my DS was a rising junior and he got a job as a summer custodian at a local elementary school. He enjoyed it because he knew three of the other guys working there for the summer. They were all recent graduates from the same HS ds attends. It might be worth checking out because everyone knows going in that it's only for the summer.
A big plus was that it was weekdays only so he had weekends off.

At this point, the college students are home and they lined up their jobs months ago. It will be slim pickings for your ds this late in the game.

I’d focus on places that are busier in the summer: landscaping, campgrounds, restaurants and shops near lakes or beach towns, ice cream place, etc. Also word of mouth. Talk to your friends, coworkers, people from church, his friends, dh’s coworkers etc.

This is a tough situation.
I live in a huge urban city, and it's very hard for teens to find work. Fast food won't hire, because they're likely to leave for college. Most businesses hire adults who have mouths to feed and won't leave.
That being said, DS got a job in a family-run small restaurant that we've been going to since before he was born. The owner happened to attend the same high school which prides itself on taking care of their own (very strong alumni association). Owner knew that DS would have a strong work ethic (2 sport athlete and great grades), and gave him a summer and holiday job. It was great money, and great hours since they close at 3.
COVID hit the restaurant hard, but they're almost fully open now, and very busy. Hopefully they'll have hours for DS when he returns from college next week.
Maybe have kiddo ask at his school to see if there are any business connections there. How about connections with sports parents?

can he lifeguard? Work at a summer camp? A day camp? I agree with the summer camp suggestions. I run one and we're having a hard time getting enough of the paid employees we need. Usually by now we have had everyone on board and hired for at least the past month. This year, we're still basically hiring you if you pass the background check, can string 2 words together, and can be there for most of the days. It's not a job that anyone will get rich at, but it pays decently and the hours are good. ETA - it's just a day camp, no overnight stuff.

I think this needs to happen, ASAP, if it hasn't already. In the past, you told your son he needed a job and then didn't make him get one. Now he really needs one and he probably is just calling your bluff and just planning on waiting you out (I know this is what my kids would probably do if they thought they could get away with it).

My son made $5000 working as a package handler at FedEx last summer. He hated it but it was an easy job to get and it paid well.
