I keep reading memes all over Facebook about these emails. I have read 4 news articles about it. NPR, BBC, Washington Post, and CNN. And I still can't seem to figure out why everyone feels that these emails are some kind of smoking gun. What am I missing?
It seems to me that he responded exactly as I thought he would. That we didn't have enough information to draw conclusions in the beginning. I just don't get it.
Why are conservatives all in an uproar over this?

Because they just want something to complain about. Doesn’t matter that it isn’t something actually worth complaining about.

This is it? Really? At the tail end of this email he said they would continue to investigate the origins of the virus.

Maybe there is more? edit: oh and there was some sort of NCAA basketball type bracket where he (or someone else?) ranked Covid as the #1 disease. I havent seen the bracket (didnt care enough to look, but DS2 was telling me about it).

I'm not singling you out. I'm just like ready to see something worth getting my panties in a bunch over. And I can't find it. And I'm not brave enough to ask one of these meme peddlers what they are so worked up about.

Its probably one of those things that if you want to find doubts with Fauci, you will. And if you take his word as gospel, you wont. Im pretty middle of the road and I don't care what his emails said. People were doing the best they could, with what they knew.

Ok I googled Fox news and the emails. It appears Tucker Carlson is accusing Fauci of a cover up and Sean Hannity is saying there is a lab leak. Should have known it was those two asshats leading the charge here.

Let me just make a comment here.... Most times I have no clue who starts a thread or whose post I'm reading. Sometimes I go wait that sounds good. And it is my post!! Shows I have forgotten what I wrote a week, month, a year ago...

Like any good scientist, Fauci couches his answers with "this is what we know NOW."
But, of course, the unhinged and irrational take knowledge at a moment in time and treat it as the unending, unchanging truth.
That's how holy books work. Not science.

The right is desperate to discredit the left in any way possible. They are angry that Fauci has come forth and said things about Trump. They are truly saying just anything. I have read all this information and cannot find anything that I think isn't "normal" to say in the circumstances we were in.

Ok, I am not saying this is *my* opinion, so don’t come @ me, but this is the issue/argument as I understand it. For the first year of the pandemic, the media/general public/liberals treated anyone who said the virus came from a lab as a crazy conspiracy theorist. Media/public/liberals even called it racist to believe that the virus came from a lab in China or to call it China Virus. Now, it turns out, it’s very possible that the virus came from a lab. There are emails where Fauci acknowledges it might have come from a lab. It’s not just about whether it came from a lab or not, it’s the fact that something that was literally called a racist crazy conspiracy theory could be true and Fauci knew all along it could be true. So what else that “they” call a crazy conspiracy theory is true?

The political leaders pander to their base, who doesn’t seem to understand that this is a new virus, and scientists have been playing catch-up. It’s incredibly cynical, and the base hasn’t got a clue that they are being exploited. This is truly one of the most dangerous times in our history. The right is actually orchestrating a coup, and lying about it with straight faces. I am concerned that Trump will manage to insert himself into politics again.

How quickly they forget former twice-impeached one-term who told Bob Woodward on tape that he knew how serious the virus was going to be and would kill thousands!! And he didn't care who or how many would die!

Do these people seriously think a long time public servant didn’t realize his emails could be FOIA’ed at any point, and conducted himself accordingly? I know my emails at work *could* be subpoenaed, and I’m always conscious of that fact when I use email.

So what else that “they” call a crazy conspiracy theory is true? Yeah, I saw that argument on Twitter. An existing sample from a lab being leaked (plausible) is entirely different to a narrative of being created in a lab and unleashed deliberately as a bioweapon (much less plausible), though. (Not saying you are saying that, that was just my thought when I saw someone making that point on Twitter)

A couple more in-depth articles - one from The Atlantic? I’ll look - pointed out ramifications if the virus was an accident from a Chinese lab. Of course the Chinese government would never be transparent about it. Anyway, at one point the lab theory was completely discounted, other than by conspiracy theorists who thought it was intentional by the Chinese. And now the possibility has re-emerged, not as intentional, but still important. I haven’t followed it closely since reading the article I thought summed it up so well, but that may be part of it. If not, ignore this/me. Yes, it was The Atlantic. I thought it was excellent, like so much of their writing, plus one of my favorite political writers there, Adam Serwer, has five (now four?) orangie cats called The Garfields that he tweets about. So there’s that. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2021/05/chinese-lab-leak-hypothesis-coronavirus/619000/

It is fine to treat them as conspiracy theorists when they say that the "lab engineering" and/or "lab leak" theory is fact instead of one of many theories - and less plausible than others (based on knowledge at the time). I'm asking you, who posited their theory, if YOU see the difference.

Because they are ....emails
That's all that many Trump supporters have to hear to salivate over the possibility of something damning being in them.

I'd imagine he would as well. Also, I'd personally hedge my bets a little, especially at the beginning since we knew so little and you know they would latch on to what he said on March 1st at 2:00 as his only thought ever and it couldn't change and since that might be wrong then he was always wrong

Things I learnt during the pandemic: - The general public is less scientifically literate than I previously thought, e.g lack of understanding of the scientific method, not understanding that 'there is no evidence that' does not mean 'it is proven that x does not', not understanding that knowledge is not static, what DNA (and mRNA) is and is not, viruses vs bacteria, what a pre-print is, the importance of peer-review, statistical significance. - The paucity of good science journalism. When did science journalism get so click-baity?

Part of the problem is that people may not have the same understanding of 'lab leak'. Some of the interpretations I've come across are: a. a natural virus that was being studied at the lab accidently got out e.g. maybe a researcher didn't handle it properly and got sick b. a natural virus that was being engineered accidently got out. c. a man-made virus accidently got out d. the CCP was developing a biological weapon that accidently got out e. the CCP deliberately infected people.
One of Fauci's statements, that studies of the makeup of the virus indicate that it is not man-made (c,d, or e) were incorrectly interpreted as saying it was definitely not a or b.
e is what was labeled a conspiracy theory. a was never off the table as a possible origin here in Australia. Maybe other countries saw our govt as conspiracy theorists when they asked for an independent inquiry way back in April 2020.
As an aside, my 'favourite' conspiracy theory is that the US took coronavirus to China (either accidentally or deliberately) during the war games held in ... surprise, surprise, Wuhan in 2019. (Favourite for entertainment value. I don't believe it)
