No DH has family that will only eat at chain restaurants when they are away from home. Completely unadventurous and want everything to be familiar and "just like home". In that case, why travel at all? Trying new restaurants and new foods is a huge part of the adventure of travel. I don’t mean come at you personally, just this idea. Why travel at all?? We LOVE to travel. We couldn’t care less what we eat while we travel. That does not mean we are completely unadventurous. Seeing new parts of our world, hiking new trails, finding local activities, learning about the history of new places, finding an indie bookstore (I could go on and on) is a huge part of the adventure of travel for us. Half the time were forced to research restaurants because we’re in a place with nothing we recognize anyway, chain or otherwise. It’s a huge pain in the neck to me. Just find a pizza place so we can stop being hungry and so we can get back out and find that park we want to spend time at! People like all kinds of things that are different. Let’s not decide negative things about people who do things differently than us!

I want to do this, but Im always nervous about ending up with a bad meal. It is stupid, I know! I usually end up with a bad meal at a chain. I am rarely disappointed at local establishments.

We try to eat exclusively at local places and not chains, and not tourist traps. I want to eat where the locals eat as much as possible. I always look on Google or Yelp for places with good reviews before we travel. (We are foodies and are fortunate not to have any food allergies or major restrictions in the family. I get that not everyone is as lucky.) Same! I wouldn't say we're foodies, but part of the joy of travel is finding fun local places. That said, I did at McDonald's and Pizza Hut in China. 🤣 The Pizza Hut was SO FANCY! Wait staff and cloth napkins!

Oh yes. DH and I have a rule when we travel of no chain restaurants. We have found quite a few hidden gems, and very rarely get a meal that is just ew. No DH has family that will only eat at chain restaurants when they are away from home. Completely unadventurous and want everything to be familiar and "just like home". In that case, why travel at all? Trying new restaurants and new foods is a huge part of the adventure of travel. My inlaws are chain people, but part of it is because my FIL has Celiac and cannot have any gluten. Luckily lots of places are more gluten-free friendly than they used to be, but sometimes they need to just know that he can have a meal safely. For that reason, I don't judge folks who do hit chains; sometimes there's a good reason.

We eat local too, heck we eat local here too. It is very rare for us to eat at any chain restaurant even at home. If we eat at a chain it is Burgerville (which is a local chain) McDonald's (because I don't care what people say I love their fries) or very occasionally 5 Guys, but even at home we have local restaurants we frequent. I have very odd allergies that are also life threatening and I only eat chicken for meat, so it does take some research, but I always manage to find places to eat wherever we go.

I always do a lot of research on good restaurants and fun places to eat when we travel - always local I’d say. I don’t think I ever really eat at chain restaurants anyway I can’t think of the last one we ate at - maybe Black Bear Diner on our way up to Oregon a few years ago. Oh - and In and Out - we were so starving driving home from Tahoe last weekend and I had teens with me we went to their drive thru. But my town and surrounding towns have no chain restaurants. I am headed to Portland next week if anyone has recommendations lol- last minute trip and don’t have my logistics figured out yet DM me what kind of restaurants you’re looking for and what parts of town and I’ll give you some recs Feel free to share with the rest of us! We are always looking for new spots to try in PDX.

Dh will not do fast food, I prefer not to, whether on the road or at home. We try to do local when we travel, but I can see the food allergy side to safe eating when traveling.

We generally frequent local establishments even at home. The exception would be a quick meal from places like Panera or Boston Market.

We try to eat at new places when going to a new vacation destination. However, when we travel to the same place for vacation (say, San Diego), we've already established some of our favorites and stick to those (there's a couple of beach restaurants we love to eat at). Same for when we go to our son's college town. Both of our older kids went to the same college about 250 away from us, and we have our faves there.
We did go to Glacier Park just recently, though. Our oldest son is working a seasonal job at one of the lodges up there. We stayed in Whitefish, Montana and there was one place that was to die for (The Wich Haus). Their food was amazing, farm-to-table. They pickled their own onions, made their own pickles, that type of thing. We had a smoked beet salad that was amazing! Even their custard was great, they had a rhubarb flavor that my husband loved.

I avoid chains when we travel. I make the exception if it's a chain that we don't have where we live. We're going to Vegas later this month - we will eat at In-N-Out.

Yes. Why go somewhere new and eat something you can get at home?

We're usually about 90% local places, but usually find there's a day or a circumstance when we hit something familiar. Sort of like when we had been in Europe for 2 weeks and stumbled on a Chipotle at lunch time. My kids were over the moon excited for something from home.

In that case, why travel at all? Trying new restaurants and new foods is a huge part of the adventure of travel. In response to your why travel at all question, my answer is I just literally don’t care about food. When we are on a trip and need food my husband says “we just need some calories,” meaning he doesn’t care what the food is, he just needs something to make energy so we can keep going. We hate stopping whatever we are doing to eat, so we will choose whatever option will take the absolute least amount of time so we can keep sight seeing. Having to stop for food is not part of the fun, it’s an annoyance. I feel like we’re pretty adventurous. We go lots of places, we do lots of things. We are not relax on vacation people. We are cram as much into a trip as possible people. We just aren’t food people.

One of the main points of traveling is to eat at local restaurants. It seems dismal to me to eat at chains. We don't eat at fast food or chain restaurants unless it's all that's available, like stopping at a rest stop when traveling by car. It’s funny how different people see things differently. I hate having to stop to eat on vacation. It’s annoying to me that we have to stop doing the things we really want to do to eat. We’d have so much more time if we didn’t have to find food. Although I understand perfectly that chain restaurants best suit your family's needs, I can see where stopping to eat there is soul-sucking. But I've had awesome experiences eating in local restaurants--one we went to by the airport in Tulsa was priceless, in terms of local color and character. I experienced a twinge of sadness that I no longer lived there. Tulsa has a quirky character that Connecticut can't compete with. That, to me, is as valuable as visiting points of interest in an area.

I do understand though that for many people food is just fuel to keep them going and not really an important part of their holiday plans.

Yes, when I travel, I will only eat at local restaurants. Well, actually sometimes I will eat at a chain if it isn't a chain in my area, such a In-and-Out Burger.
When traveling I don't want to eat at some place where I can normally eat...I prefer to eat at local restaurants....that is part of the fun of travel to me - trying new things.

Oh sometimes.. it's not a must thing to do but we do like to check out different places than what we have either chain or local type places.
Since I go to KC all the time, there are must places I have to go to because it's what I ate when I lived there or places that are on our way to KC..
So I go to these following places which are nothing fancy:
Carlos O'Kelly's (because of an appetizer they have.. Fajita Garlic Nachos
In-A-Tub (because of their tacos.. this is a total greasy spoon place)
Imo's Pizza (because it's pizza.. either you love it or hate it)
A few BBQ places because you can't go wrong usually. Smokehouse is one of our favorites.

Once we reach our destination we pretty much only eat at places we don’t have at home. Sometimes that would include fast food or chain restaurants like chic fila and sonic before they finally migrated north 😉. While on the road we would stop wherever was convenient and quick, fast food, Cracker Barrel, etc.

One of the reasons we prefer to stay at an AirBnB rather than a hotel is the “just need calories” situation. While I love to try new foods and eat in local establishments, I do not want to eat in a restaurant three meals a day for the entirety of the trip.
I always buy groceries at the beginning of the trip (can be an adventure in a foreign country!) so we can have breakfast at “home” most days, pack a picnic lunch for hiking/beach days, or have a quick simple dinner after a long day of seeing stuff. Most days we will eat out once and the other two meals are simple and from the grocery supply.
I also always, always carry nonperishable snacks like protein bars and almond packs in case we find ourselves in the middle of nowhere and getting hangry. I’d much rather have a Luna bar than stop for fast food in most cases.
(Can I please assure anyone who travels to Texas that we have many excellent local restaurants, and Whataburger should be at the very bottom of your list to try. You can do much better. 😂)

Forgot to answer the OP. I love food so I seek out local restaurants as much as possible too. However I'm not against a chain restaurant if it's most convenient/cost effective for a meal or two.
I love McDonalds in Hawaii for breakfast. The eggs, Portugese sausage and rice is MY FAVORITE.

I want to do this, but Im always nervous about ending up with a bad meal. It is stupid, I know! Try turning that thought around - maybe a local place will have the best meal you've ever had in your life! That happened to me back in 2011 in London. I still rave about the panzanella salad I had at a little outside bistro.

I love ranch but can't have ranch at most places because they make their own with heavy cream or buttermilk or use a brand that I can't use. If the wait staff can't tell me how they make their dressings/sauces, I avoid anything that says "creamy." I usually find that the smaller local places know more than the chain places do. I've been finding that more places, small and chain, are putting GF symbols on their menus.

Part of the trip planning I love to do is to look at the highly-rated restaurants on Trip Advisor and figure out which ones look interesting and how to fit them in with the hikes, museums, gardens etc that we want to explore. However, traveling internationally with teens, there were a couple times when American chains saved us when we desperately needed a restroom! Or AC and drinks with ice on a super-hot and humid day. And several times we have ended up at a Starbucks mostly because we needed good wifi or to charge a phone. I really don't understand the "Why travel if you don't do X?" comments. When we travel, we learn about how different people do things, and learn to be more open-minded. But we can be very close-minded about how other people travel

I eat local at home, so I do the same while traveling. I often research and reserve a few fine dining options beforehand and plan the day around them. Dining well is a privilege I enjoy.
