When I’m on the road, I prefer chains, or else I pack food. When I get to my destination, I want local food.

Oh sometimes.. it's not a must thing to do but we do like to check out different places than what we have either chain or local type places. Since I go to KC all the time, there are must places I have to go to because it's what I ate when I lived there or places that are on our way to KC.. So I go to these following places which are nothing fancy: Carlos O'Kelly's (because of an appetizer they have.. Fajita Garlic Nachos In-A-Tub (because of their tacos.. this is a total greasy spoon place) Imo's Pizza (because it's pizza.. either you love it or hate it) A few BBQ places because you can't go wrong usually. Smokehouse is one of our favorites. Carlos O'Kelly's is a favorite of mine. The original location is right by my house 😂😂😂 I read that as Calories O'Kelly's. 😂😂😂

I will say that in the tiny little town where dh's family lives, there is a very highly rated gastropub. We plan to try it when we visit in August.

I love to try popular local restaurants when I travel. Some of the best meals I've ever had were at local regional restaurants. When we were on a cruise vacation in the Caribbean, on each new island, we would ask the cab driver where their family went to celebrate an event and would try that restaurant instead of eating at the touristy places. We had some of the most memorable meals on that trip. The ship's food wasn't all that great, but the various island restaurants were amazing.
Usually anyone I travel with is also happy to try local popular spots. Years ago, I was in Nebraska with my at-that-time fiancé to visit his mother. While driving through town, I saw a fast food place called Runza. I said we should try it, just for the heck of it. My fiancé absolutely refused to eat at a place called Runza. Nothing I could say would persuade him. Sure, I agreed it was an unfortunate choice of name, but that didn't mean we would automatically get sick from eating there and I was feeling playfully curious. Plus, we were in the town for over a week and had run out of new places to try. There wasn't a lot of choice in that town, and several meals were already determined by his mom wanting to eat at her favorite haunts. I figured one lunch at a Runza wouldn't be a big deal. We never ate there.

You should make them and serve them and don’t tell him what they are called until afterwards.

Yes, some of the best meals out I have had have been from random choices when on vacation. Then I get home and I'm so sad I can't have the tasty food again!

Yes!!! I do lots of research before road trips, too. No chains if possible!
I also try to persuade DH to try more "mom & pop" places near us, instead of chains. What I hate is when the food is just...BAD! We tried several local places for take-out during quarantine---most of them were meh or BAD, even with lots of great reviews!

No, we actually stick with chains. I feel it's a desire to have food we know and are comfortable with. I'm sure we miss out on some great gastronomic experiences but we don't miss what we don't know about.

Yes for sure. For me, that would be one of the best and most exciting things about travelling to a different country.
When we went to Vietnam, the thing I was looking forward to most of all was the food. Unfortunately I got sick on the second day, and I felt a bit off for the whole trip, so I didn't get to enjoy as much of the food as I had hoped.
(It wasn't the food that made me sick, because DSO and I ate exactly the same things, and he didn't get sick.)

My dad used to make cabbage rolls all the time when I was growing up. When I would get a craving, I made cabbage roll soup because it was faster. Yum! If I were alone on that trip, I absolutely would have gone there. The fiance was weird about trying anything different or new. He refused to go there just based on the name, not even knowing what kind of food they served. And I broke off the engagement, so no serving him anything anymore.

Trying out local foods (my dietary restrictions permitting) is one of the best parts of travelling for me. I love going to the places that are popular with the locals. I tend to ask the cleaners and taxi drivers for recommendations on where and what to eat. If I go to a food court or market I go to the busiest stall. (Also a good way to avoid food poisoning)

(Can I please assure anyone who travels to Texas that we have many excellent local restaurants, and Whataburger should be at the very bottom of your list to try. You can do much better. 😂) I agree! We visit TX usually every year to see DH's sister and brother. I don't think Whataburger is that great. They've taken us to some great little places.

I don’t care either way. I’m kind of picky and I just want there to be something on the menu that I will eat. I like basic food without weird ingredients. Nothing sucks more to me than going to a place where everything on the menu is expensive and on top of that every dish has something in it or on it that I *KNOW* I don’t like. Yes, I know that I can just try to have them leave it off, put it on the side or I can pick it out, but really. If I’m on vacation I don’t want to have to think about it that much.
My BFF loves to try local places and will always check with the hotel concierge to ask where the workers/staff go to eat, and those are the places she tries to make it to. I understand her logic. The last time we went on a trip somewhere she dragged me to this Guy Fieri restaurant and everything on the menu sounded gross to me! I picked something because it was already after 8:00 pm and I was starving, but really didn’t like it or enjoy it at all especially since it wasn’t cheap and we had no means to reheat the leftovers in case someone else wanted what I wasn’t going to eat (which was half of the plate).
I really hate paying for food I’m just going to end up throwing away. At least with McDonald’s or Burger King I know I’m going to eat what I’ve paid for.

I am strictly a west coaster, but I love myself a Runza/Runsa. The Cook’s Illustrated recipe is the best. I had never heard of them until DH brought me. I couldn't try them because I don't eat beef, but found a recipe online and substituted ground turkey. I now have to make 2 different kinds when I make them: ground turkey, mushroom, and mozzarella and ground turkey, pickles, and cheddar. If it's just DH, I could make the "original", but he likes the adaptations. ^.^ I'll have to look up the recipe you suggested and mix it up in autumn.

Now I want to make Runzas … 😂
It’s pretty much the only Nebraska food staple I miss. And TBH, I’d probably season them a lot more heavily than the restaurant does after 24 years in Texas. Maybe add some jalapeños.

We try to eat local as much as possible on vacation and at home. There are a few regional chains we love and frequent as well, but we try to stay away from the big national chains mostly because they just aren't as good. We have kids with adventurous palates and our only food allergy is very manageable/easy to avoid. So we are lucky in that. When my kids travel with my family, they get very frustrated with the amount of fast food and chain restaurants they visit because it is so different from what they are used to. It's definitely about what you like/value. My husband is a trained chef and has converted me and raised our kids to be foodies. We always have a list of local restaurants ready where ever we go. We made a quick 2 hour drive yesterday to get a replacement title to sell my car and found a local place for lunch while we were there.

My mind can't wrap my head around picky eaters. I will eat ALMOST anything. I hate raw carrots. I have to remind myself that some people see 90% of food the way I feel about raw carrots. I just kind of feel lucky that I ended up non-picky. Olives, liver, blue cheese, seafood, vegetables (not raw carrots), etc., I love it all.
I have 3 nephews and one will eat anything except hot dogs, and the other two are really picky and mostly like junk food. Every time we go out I have to make sure that the restaurant also serves some form of chicken fingers. It is frustrating.
Food is a big part of my life (and unfortunately I'm a bit overweight). I absolutely will try any restaurant.

A few years ago, my husband and I ate breakfast at Le Pain Quotidien on a trip to Chicago. We still talk about that meal, even though we ate at a local location for our anniversary a few years later, because the meal we had at the one in Chicago was just so much better.

We are not foodies, but we like to eat at local places when we travel. We look up reviews on Yelp when we travel. So, it may be a regional chain or a mom and pop, just some place we don't have at home. I even want to try Whataburger and Waffle House if we ever run across one. Absolutely. Our rule is to not eat at any place that we can get at home unless it is a quick on the road meal. We try to avoid chains, unless they are small local chains.

They are fantastic. I don't eat meat anymore and they started making a vegetarian one. I was so excited. Now, they are off the menu. They also have great fries and onion rings.

The only must stop restaurant when I travel is to Cracker Barrel but it’s not for the food. I stock up on the hard candy sticks because I can get them in a variety of flavors. Those say “vacation” to me.

We love eating local and do so wherever possible but when I visited West Coast USA a couple of years ago, I was incredibly excited when we were desperate for something to eat and a Dairy Queen was en route!
I do like the opportunity to eat in chains that we hear about but we don't have at home such as Dairy Queen (delicious!), Panera Bread (really enjoyed) and Taco Bell (awful).
