Our old neighborhood was a subdivision surrounded by other subdivisions. We had to drive to get anywhere. The one corner with things we might have walked to was on the busy main street with the entrance to all the subdivisions and didn’t have sidewalks.
We moved to a neighborhood and I have walked to my bank and my grocery store (I have an insulated backpack and have often walked to shop when I don’t need a lot of anything or anything too heavy to walk back with). I can walk to the pharmacy where prescriptions are sent. And I walk to McDonalds on weekend mornings to get a Diet Coke and to Dunkin Donuts. We don’t keep snacks in our house, so I’d anyone wants a snack, we take a walk to get them. We love some yogurt pretzels at a gas station about a mile away. We have to work for them! There’s also a fun pizza restaurant with a huge patio and sand volleyball courts a mile or so away. That’s a fun weekend walk.
Walking to do small errands I would have had to jump in my car to do before is one of my new favorite things.
Can you walk to nearby things?

I live downtown in a small rural town….I can walk to anywhere in town. Unfortunately our grocery store closed but I used to be able to walk there (not for weekly shopping, too expensive, but for odds n ends). We have a dollar general, I could walk there. School, bank, pharmacy, subway, pizza place, city park, pub, gas station, hair salon, post office…..all very easily walkable. On the other end of town we have multiple dispenseries…..I don’t partake but if I did I could walk there too. Could walk to another state too but unless I’m just going to see farmland that’s all that’s walkable that direction.

Nothing, my entire town does not have sidewalks and we live on the main drag, speed limit is 45 but people do 65 and up. The nearest grocery and gas stations are about a 15 and 20 minute drive.
The new house we are moving to is in the middle of nowhere so no walking there either. I don’t think that town has sidewalks as well.

johnnysmom, I’m jealous of your nearby park. That’s one thing I would love to be within walking distance of.

The closest anything is at least 3 miles away so no but I am not a city girl ,I love been in the country. But we don’t hunt , fish, own guns or go to church ,have a strong accent when we speak English and are proud and loud liberals so most of our neighbors think that we are weirdo

We are a little over half a mile away from what is called the neighborhood business area--coffee shop, restaurants, hardware store, yoga studio, banks, post office, etc. When my boys were little I would walk there while pushing them in a stroller. Now I don't walk there as much because our bank branch closed & life got busier.

I live in a smaller town and during the school year I walk to work. The only time I don't is if it's raining or dangerously cold. We do not have home mail delivery, so I walk to get our mail too. That is about it because there is not a lot in our town. During the summer months we live at the lake and we would have to walk ridiculously far to run any errand. We can walk to visit neighbors and to access hiking trails.

johnnysmom, I’m jealous of your nearby park. That’s one thing I would love to be within walking distance of. Don’t be jealous. “Park” is being generous. It was good when ds was little and we go down to the playground (which is a nice playground) and when ods was a young teen and could ride his bike there with friends. But in reality it’s a playground, ball fields and a small shelter. And a creek runs thru where kids can fish. There’s no walking trails or any real nature (beyond the creek).

I can walk to a 7-11, a bunch of different restaurants, CVS, library, the subway (and all the things that are always right around a subway stop), Trader Joe's, my bank... just about everything. All of that is less than a mile, or just a bit more than a mile. However... while I *could* walk to all those places, do I actually do it? Nope. Especially not in the summer.

I can walk to a gas station, a party (liquor) store, DQ, Sherwin Williams, Riteaid, Joann's, Family Dollar, McDonald's, Walgreens, Wendy's, Subway, and a variety of other businesses. I live in an urban area.

I can walk to dunkin, pharmacy, bank, grocery, Walmart a lot of things.
But I don’t ( except the Dunkin’ ) because they are all across very main roads that I won’t walk across. By main roads I mean 4 lane state numbered roads. My DD did, which drove me crazy but she’s an adult so what could I do. There are traffic lights where there are crosswalks but still I’m of them mindset that it’s just more risky than worth doing.

The library, 2 grocery stores, several parks, many trails including the Bruce Trail which is 890 km in length, banks, liquor store, Walmart, drug store, cannabis shop restaurants, bakery etc. I'm in a a 1960s suburb but we are within 1 km to a lot of services and green space.

The closest little shopping area (grocery store, drug store, hair places, small eating places) is 1.5 miles away. Technically, I could walk it, but it is a bit far to walk with groceries. I wish I had stores a lot closer to me.

I would LOVE to walk or ride my bike to work. That would be my dream. I’m a 20 minute drive from work with no sidewalks for a bit.
I do walk or ride my bike to the grocery store all year round, unless the snow is too hard to walk or bike through. I have to talk myself into it a bit, but I’m always glad I did when I’m back home.

I used to drive the kids to school on my way to work, but if I couldn't, they would walk. The local shops are right opposite the school - 7-Eleven petrol station, wine bar, supermarket, butcher, bakery, fruit & veg, post office, fish & chips, pizza, cafes x 2, chemist, Chinese, travel agent, BBQ chicken etc. It's only 1.5km (less than a mile) from home. So I could walk there, but I don't. We have a number of parks and small lakes in my suburb, and I walk to one of them most days.

If I liked to golf a golf course is about 400 feet behind my house. Other than that, I live in rural suburbia and nothing is in walking distance.
There is a whole new mega development going in about a mile west and allegedly there will be a "commerce center". It is very high end so hoping for a nice grocery store.

It's about 1.5 miles to our downtown area (small town). However we are in a subdivision just on the edge of the city limits and once you get out of our subdivision there aren't any sidewalks for a bit. Plus I am fat and out of shape, the walk takes me a really long time. We do walk to town for exercise sometimes in the evening, but if I want something from town, I get in my car and drive.
ETA in town we have a bank, post office, city hall, a few shops, some mom and pop restaurants, a couple of fast food places, one grocery store and a dozen or so small businesses.

Lots of things, we live on the outskirts of a city so everything is a short distance from us. We're 20 minutes walk away from all the shops, cinemas, bars, cafes, the opera house, theatres, a busy port and marina. Also not far from the train station, coach station and airport.

I can walk a block or 2 and get to Home Depot, Regal theater, my voting poll and Dunkin. A few blocks more to 7-11, my favorite dive bar, grocery, Target, KFC, Starbucks, the bank, library, Urgent Care, Subway, Wendy's, Taco Bell and the Chinese buffet. If I get on my bike, I can go to Niagara Falls-the bike path starts at the end of my street.

in a pinch, I could walk to a Dollar General but it's a mile away along a busy street with no sidewalks so unless I had no other choice, I won't be walking there.

I’m in a suburb. I can walk to multiple shopping centers with several grocery stores, restaurants, Starbucks, 7-eleven, etc. - a mall is walking distance - a hospital - bookstore, library - I live in the perfect suburb to be honest.

Within about 500m of our apartment, we have a small grocery store, a pharmacy, a nice bakery and a few restaurants- most of them part of a hotel. Still easily walkable are a couple of bigger grocery stores, including the one where we do most of our shopping, though I tend to take to train at least home from there. Within a km there are many more restaurants. We are also close to the largest park in Munch and several smaller playgrounds, though we don’t have kids to use them. The local cemetery is also only about 300m away! In reality, I could walk into the city centre of Munich - it is only 4.5 - 5 km away, which would take me about an hour, but we have a subway station practically on our doorstep, so I tend to use that instead.
