I can walk to most places. A small supermarket, bakery, pharmacy, hairdresser, Doctors surgery and butcher are about 3 minutes away. The centre of town is 3 miles so I could walk and do if I know I'm not going to be carrying a load of heavy shopping. On a dry day I'll walk into town and take the bus home, they run every 20 minutes if I do have more shopping than I anticipated. I have two beautiful parks within a short walking distance. I have a retail park which I do have to drive too as it's the other side of town and takes no more than 10 minutes to drive to. DD1 had to catch a bus to school but DD2 went to a different school and walked to and from school every day. I had a job a few years ago that I walked to work every day and walked home.

We can walk to elementary school, BART, the small downtown and probably best of all a network of gorgeous hiking trails and reservoirs. Even so - I want to move to a more urban area with more amenities walkable.

Almost nothing from our current house. Our retirement home(s) will be in walkable locations.

The closest shopping center with a grocery store, McD's and smaller shops and restaurants, is about two miles one way.
I could easily walk that distance if I wanted to, as I walk 2-4 miles regulary at the gym.
I have never walked it, because it would require walking a short distance down a couple lesser travelled streets to a longer distance heavily traveled six lanes(three each direction). I wouldn't feel comfortable or safe walking the less travelled streets by myself. Plus the grocery store is one of the higher priced store chains in my city, and I rarely shop there.
If I lived in a walking friendly neighborhood that had a lot of pedestrian traffic, with stores and restaurants nearby, then I would absolutely walk to them. I love walking.

I live half a block from the park, library, bike trail, rec center, car repair, Starbucks, Wendy’s, bank, pizza, foot dr, eye dr& bakery.
2 blocks from 3 yoga studios & 2 gyms. All are outrageously priced. In that same 2 blocks is another coffee shop, book store, grocery, home boutique, oil change 2 hair salons, barber, crafter’s consignment shop, wine making shop, & a few mom & pop restaurants.
I walk in the park or on the trail everyday I can. I get burned out on the restaurants. I also regularly use the library.
The bakery has been sold to a different bakery so I’m looking forward to that. I hope they have coffee/tea. It’s literally 4 houses down.
Surprisingly only the catholic school is walking distance. The public schools are not.
On the down side because it’s so urban there’s rats & homeless addicts around. The addicts have gotten very aggressive this past year. They do curtail my route sometimes. Surprisingly the neighbors in just my block are not friendly. I’m used to very friendly neighbors everywhere else I’ve lived.
I work at least 20 minutes by car.

I can walk to the water and hop in a kayak. I walk along the water almost daily. Other than that, nothing.

I am within one mile of community college, whole foods, trader joes, major mall, target, numerous places to eat, pet store, hardware store, brewpub, and lots of other stuff.. but I live in a major city with lots of choices. since I live on a hill, I don't often walk to many places, but dh and my kid does. I am one block from the muni train and 1 mile from BART.. so I could get around. if I had to..

Yes I can walk to a small market town 10 mins away where there’s a supermarket, hairdressers, banks and most things you could want within reason. I love walking to it - it was a Saxon town with history from 821 including the remains of a castle so I like walking and seeing all the history.

I can walk to the water and hop in a kayak. I walk along the water almost daily. Other than that, nothing. Honestly. You're livin' the life out there, and when I see your IG I'll admit to being a bit jealous much of the time . Sometimes I really wish I wasn't such a city girl!

I live in a residential area in a county that is very rural. The golf course that is behind my house has closed and the city has bought it. The community loves walking, running, and biking on the golf course trails. It has become very popular -especially since covid. There are a few ponds where people fish. It's a great place to bird watch and see other animals (deer, fox, bunnies, etc). Our city also has paved walking trails from our neighborhood to main street. In theory I could walk to the grocery store, the local private college, the hair salon, the bakery, etc. We usually only walk for recreation or exercise though. If I have errands to run I usually hop in the car.

In one direction I could get to a small business area with 10 businesses including a grocery store. Another direction leads me to a fitness center with a good 10 businesses across the street, and a third direction leads me to a Target, Tinseltown, and a large arena that is currently filled with dinosaurs you can see for $50 a carful. My favorite destination is a five minute walk away. It is a small lake.

We can and have walked to Safeway or the donut shop in the morning(1.25 mi)--$Tree, Kohls and Ross are there, too. WalMart (.9 mi), Costco (1 Mi), and between home and Costco is a pizza place, sandwich shop, chinese food, KFC, sushi place, mexican restaurant, Starbucks and an Applebys. Dr is about 2 mi, but there is lots of traffic that way. Just over 1 mi another direction is a large park, with community events, and a beautiful pool. There is also a lot of residential area that we walk through for exercise. Our gym is 1.5 mi away (haven't been in over 18 mos.). We have said that when we can't drive or walk well we could hop on a Lark scooter and go where needed (ugh--hopefully never needed).

I don't walk that often and especially not now with the heat. But all these places are around a half mile away or less. My library (yessssssssss), a hair salon, my favorite Mexican restaurant, an Italian restaurant, a great breakfast/lunch spot, two bars, a thrift store, a coffee/tea/boba place, and a great resort with three restaurants (all delish).
I never walk to these places. But a mile away is Safeway, Walmart Market, Dutch Bros., Coldstone, Walgreens, another Italian restaurant, fro-yo, Subway, Dominos, Whataburger, BK, sushi, Chinese, Big O Tires, gas station, a hair salon, dollar store, nail place, new wing place, Buffalo Spot, and a few other places.
I love where I live. So much.

We moved downtown this spring and we love it. Within a 5 minute walk we are in a park on Lake Ontario. There's a marina and boat launch near our house so we take walks along it nearly daily, and dh goes paddleboarding regularly.
We are within easy walking distance of a grocery store, liquor store, flower shop, hair and nail salons, cinema and performing arts theatre, restaurants and bars, as well as a park, library, pool, outdoor ice rink (winter), tennis/pickleball courts etc. We walk everywhere and I rarely drive anymore. So far it's been an absolute dream. DH just said today he may never leave this neighbourhood.

i can walk to pretty much everything.
grocery stores (4?), markets, drug stores, hardware store, library, banks, community centre, indoor and outdoor pool, liquor store, a small mall, greek town, little india, little chinatown, the beach.... all within 15 mins.
some people in our neighbourhood don't have cars. many have one car for the family.
eta: i walk often to run errands - not for big shops of groceries though... too heavy - i notice all the good and heavy stuff (juice, pasta sauce, canned goods) are ALL on sale when i walk - lol!

We live in a subdivision that, once in, you'd swear is in the middle of nowhere. From the main entrance, I can hit the following within a one mile radius: A high school and two elementary schools, Safeway, a gas station, nine restaurants (of which four serve foods from other cultures), a Starbucks, two preschool/daycares, two banks, a local drug store, two hair places, a maryjane store, two dentists, one insurance agency, and a T Mobile store.

I can walk to the post office, the library, one restaurant and a bar.
They are all within 1 mile from my house.
We walk if it isn't too cold or if we aren't going somewhere after.
I walk to the library if I am not checking out booka.

I can walk the entire perimeter of my town. To encompass the entire town is a 4 mile walk...walk south to the furthest part of town, go as far east, then north to the edge of town, then all the way west and then back to my house is 4.2 miles.

Just to the elementary school, which was great when the kids were younger. There is a grocery store a mile away, so you can walk there but the route is along a very unsafe for pedestrians road.

If there was a bike path or lane, I would totally ride my bike to work on occasion. It is 4 miles. But my choices are a US highway or a country road with no lane or shoulder for bikes and a 55 mph speed limit

It's too freaking hot to walk anywhere! I live a block away from a busy hike/bike trail, and can go to tons of bars, restaurants, retail shopping, etc via bicycle in minutes. We rarely drive our cars on weekends, and usually ride to breakfast on Sundays. On Saturday nights, we walk to a neighborhood bar for drinks, snacks and game-watching.

I am walking distance to many businesses, including a major grocery and Target. Also two parks, one with lots of cool trails and river for water craft. Also the library. And a gorgeous wetland reserve.
During good weather ill I’ll walk to the park and enjoy the trails almost every day. Errands are more infrequent, mostly Target and the dollar store or small grocery trips.
Suburban Oregon near a main road.

I live in the city, so I can walk to everything. The list of what I *can't* walk to is shorter:
Two of my 3 jobs are too far to walk, and my kids also take public transportation to school. My GP and the kids' pediatrician are subway rides away, though the hospital is close - maybe a 10 minute walk. Some of my friends live too far away to walk.
Everything else is at hand. During the summer, when we're all on break, I don't buy Metrocards (subway passes) because we don't use them on the daily. That doesn't mean we never venture out of the 'hood; it just means we don't HAVE to.

One of the reasons I don’t start a lot of threads is because I always want to respond to every single reply! I really liked reading all the different types of places where we all live and what we can(and do) do there. There’s definitely give and take to the “walking community” places to live and the “so far out we have to drive to everything” places.

I can walk to Kohls, Walmart, a Mexican restaurant, several fast food restaurants and a liquor store. They are all within 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 miles. Do I? No. LOL I have ridden my bike to Walmart before when I only had a few things to get that I could easily carry home in a back pack.
I have been thinking about telling myself I can only drink wine if I walk to the liquor store and get it, but I haven't actually done it yet. LOL
ETA: I am also less than two miles from a grocery store, but no way would I walk. It would require crossing a busy road going through several stoplights that I honestly don't even like driving through sometimes.
I have always wanted to live where I could walk to more things, but I am not a city living sort of gal, either.
